| I assume these 4 bores are following the CIP standard. And, Now, with a 4 bore standard, I wonder if we might see more builders and perhaps some blue collar single shots? |

| Actually the Searcy and Owen 4 bores have different diameters. See comments on the other post about Searcy 4 bore at the Reno SCI show. |

Ditto's Roscoe I noticed it immediately, most lefties have a superior eye when it comes to picking up a Lt. handed rifle in a pic or on a table with other rifles

Some, a vry few, actually did hunt with a 4 bore. Maybe, in general they were smaller in diameter firing conical bullets of 1/4 pound. But, nit picking aside, there is history to the four bore. I would not call it absurd. There is nothing in the record of any 'sucessful' working 2 bore, elephant rifle. Failed experiments all. So, there is my threshold. IMHO, only. I would say, when shooters begin substituting aluminum bullets or sabots like rounds to turn a bad idea into something shootable. Thats my other limit, again IMHO. |

Which is more absurd, owning a single four bore or owning a few dozen rifles of something less than four bore?

| . . . I can hunt with any one of the dozen rifles of calibers less than four bore, I cannot with a double four bore . . . without a limber or a caisson. Pull that baby out of case and watch the tracker's eyes bug out when he realizes he gets to carry it.

I have examined both 4 and 8 bore original guns and they did not look so bulky. The 8 bore is reasonably proportioned- almost practical by comparison. Better or worse, I believe the older bbls ran slightly longer. I only in person handled one 4 bore, it was an H&H and that must have been with lighter bbls and frame or maybe it was one of the high performance 4bores which ran closer to 0.9(~6bore). The 0.9 bore allows both slimmer guns and longer more efficient 1/4 pound bullets. It was still a very heavy gun. Todays builders and customers seem to have the idea the only true 4-bore is 1 inch. Those were mostly round ball guns. I think this market is driven by the desire to be big, more than the desire to hunt or even shoot. If that is the new std, thats fine with me - at least we have a standard. |

| To MJines, My opinion for absurd is over true four bore, 1.052". That's why the two bore threads don't even excite me, them at 1.325" for a true 2B according to: http://www.hallowellco.com/bore_size_chart.htm

I agree, absurd is one thing, but optimum/balance/proportion is yet another. Sadly, if; there was any serious interest in shooting or hunting with the old "bores" you would read more about 0.85 to 0.93. That is where the rubber hit the road. Either the 8 bore, or the "TRUE" 4bore that fired 1/4 pound bullets in 0.9-0.93 bores. Whole situation reminds me of all those shiloh sharps in 45/120 or so-called 50/140. If they offered a 45/200 someone would want that too. At a glance, you can SEE the difference between origional guns and modern. Like silicon boobs vs the real woman. |
