28 ga bolt action for practice?
I was skimming the 12 ga FH thread (which is a wonderful exercise of madness that I highly respect), and I saw someone was working on a 28 ga. FH... What about a 28 ga. bolt action for practice? Maybe a 410, depending on which would be closer to ~458 win mag in length... Would this work? Or would it have to be single-shot? Could you load a straight-walled rifle cartridge w. shot, the same as a revolver (That idea seems like a good way to send a 500 gr. bullet down a skeet range, eventually, though...)

If I'm not mistaken, the 550 Express and Magnums are about 28 ga.

I'm making a 28GA FH on Enfield action using
the .550 barrel which is same as 28ga.
Should be going in a bit. I have a 3.25"
long brass case I had RMC make and also
will fire regular shorter plastic cases.Ed

Boom- The 475 #2 brass isn't big enough base,
as I would have used them if they were.
The 28ga FH and regular plastic are .620"
base and .682" rim. A 585 cal slug is close
to 24ga(.580). And I went to 3.25" as that was
3/4" longer than a few 28ga plastic and
at 3.25", with moderate pressures it will
keep up with Gibbs factory loads.RMC is all
tooled to make cases.Ed

OK so use 500 Jeffery or 500 AHR brass for a bolt version and casemouth headspace or do the put a new rim on thing...

Yes the .550" is 28ga or the 28ga is .550" and why the 28ga cleaning gear works for the .550" and it eliminated the cost of having cleaning gear made for a new caliber.

Well, the 12 and 16 ga. seem a bit too big, but the idea of being able to practice shooting skeet w. a rifle similar to a hunting one seems like a good idea... Or not... but it would probably still be fun -- I have a lever action 410 which is fairly entertaining, so I thought a bolt action might be as well.

AG,
fair enough.. though i think the 12 would be more training for a rigby or so... start with mid loads, then work up to slugs, and if you set it up right, in the same stock you are using for hunting... i would NOT practice skeet shooting, though, as that would proably induce center of mass shooting habits, or leading way too much, in a rifle

Get a Geha 12 Ga and a ER Shaw 12 ga rifled barrel and have it threaded and chambered for the 12 Ga FH short. You'll have a pretty cheap 12 Bore. Now that would be cool.! Heck I may make one for myself.-Rob
