Have any of the Hubel wildcat cartridges been built into rifles and shot? If so, can someone post loading data and chronograph results? Thanks.

I've handled his 458HE rifle, if that helps any. Why don't you e-mail Ed and ask for the information yourself?

My 458 has fired in a Ruger bolt action and an Enfield bolt.The 4 years of testing was in these two. The 510HE fired a little in an Enfield then had barrel bored out to be use on 550HE and it is in same Enfield action.Got a 585 barrel on Enfield for 585HE, last 2 need reamers done and am working on it.I want to get a barrel for 510 and use Ruger #1 as it is a rimmed case. This is way down the road. My bigger ones, 700, 650, 620, 900,I have the barrels except 650 and got to get actions, and reamers. Have a 12GA FH barrel in a Savage 210 waiting for reamer. Top loads for 458HE is 135gr W-760, 500gr at 2800 fps, and for 510 HE 185 gr W-760 600 gr real close to 3000fps.These are long barrels. I wish I could do them faster but serious illness of my better half has me broke.Ed. MZEE WA SIKU

Ed, thanks for the update. What velocities did you get from the .500 HE?

The 510HE got 2970 to 2990 fps with 600 gr Barnes soft. I should get same or better with 600gr Hawk in the 550HE when we get it done. I feel if I can get a #1 weighted to 16 lbs, with heavy barrel, and buttstock weight it will be manageable on full loads. The 510 in a #1(or double)would make a great low pressure 22-2400 fps loading, with bmg and hunting 50 cal bullets.Ed. MZEE WA SIKU

that's roughly 12,000 ft-lb of muzzle energy. If I shot an elephant with that I'd die before the elephant. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Ed you forgot the 4-bore and 2-bore project
|
one of us |
No we can't forget them. They just don't have my name on them. How about the 2bore. Did forget 700H, a short version of the 700HE to use with an intermediate size action, that we hope to get MRC to build the PH action up to. I sent MRC a couple 700H cases.Don't know if they want to run away or make action to our needs..Some folks think we are kinda scary.Ed MZEE WA SIKU

What pressures? GS | |||

Ed, Which of the Hubel magnums fit into a bolt action rifle? Which actions are suitable?

500gr- 458HE, 550 HE,585 size can be used in Enfield with port lengthened, single shot. If Mrc action set up longer as now planned it could handle them with magazine worked over. Other bolt actions can have port lengthened to handle the smaller ones single shot, like Savage and Ruger. 620HE,700H, an enlarged MRC if they will do one. If not we will see if someone else will make one reasonable. 700HE, and bigger , BMG size action. For big ones I plan on getting State Arms shellholder bolt action to start with. To test 700He, 900He, and 4 bore, by changing bolt and barrels.I got couple stocks for them.Ed. MZEE WA SIKU

Ed, thanks for being so forthcoming with the development and expansion of your cartridges. Perhaps someday you could post on all the techniques you have used to develope the individual rifles for the HE. I certainly hope your wife is on the mend. I know caring for your better half can become an all-consuming fire that never seems to go out. I am sure everyone here on AR wishes her well. Thanks again for sharing. Frank

Thank you for support. As for my HE cartridges, most are my experimenting as it is such a pain and developement expense for case makers to set up and make them in large numbers. The ones I can do in a decent volume and I plan on promoting is the 700s.As I can get bmg brass to make cases. I am set up to put on belt and shape base. And 510 which is rimmed for Ruger #1 as they are made from 475 #2 brass and I can make them as well, and so can anyone else, with expanders or fireforming. GS-The top pressures I compute out at 55-60k, but most loadings that folks will use recoil wise, will be 25-40k..Ed. MZEE WA SIKU

ED: Do you know if the new CZ actions for the 450 Rigby, 505 Gibbs, etc. might work for you, giving you a cheaper, but excellent, place to start your rifles? GS

Disregarding the MRC PH action (since it does not presently exist and it does not seem it will ever materialize), will any of the HE cartridges work in any existing bolt action (other than the 50 BMG bolt actions) as a repeater? Or are these single shot affairs?

Put THAT in your 45-70 and smoke it. gs

500gr-The CZ and 602s would work singleshot, as well as Rugers,Sage, Enfield, etc. for 458 up to 585. I can make a repeater in those sizes by welding a couple enfields together. As an experiment on an enfield,to make a single stack repeater, I ground a new sear design with flat spring back of pivot,on an enfield and opened action up and the 458He might work as a repeater,if bullets seated real deep. Which I don't like to do. And with the the Lott taking off, I can't see promoting 458 size.It goes back to major problem of getting brass made. And I can't get time to build belted cases for all of my sizes. I recommend pyros wanting to get the power, building my 510 on a Ruger #1 weighted down, as the 475 #2 case it is made from only has to be straightened out.And at moderate pressures brass(anybodys, Bertram,Bell,Horneber,etc) will reload many times.And you will have 8-10,000 ft lbs at moderate pressures.Ed.
