May sound a bit strange but here in the Dallas area we are beginning to get a considerable amount of resident waterfowl that never fly north. Especially Mallards and Canadian geese. I live in a golf course community and typically take a 3 mile walk every night with my wife (about 1/2 of the walk) is on the course cart paths after the golfers have left. There are many ponds and lakes on the course. The Mallards are very tame, you can typically walk within a few feet of them and they just waddle out of the way. Last night there were about 30 Large Canadians on a cart path adjoining a big lake. They would not leave the cart path. We about had to kick them out of the way (Hissing at us). I thought what a remarkable situation when these animals do not see you as a threat, how close they will let you get to them. What is especially surprising is their staying here in such a HOT summer. We have already had about 25 100 degree + days and there is no end in sight. I will say that I have not seen any goslings with the Geese. Curious if they will breed down here? EZ | ||

We (TN) were one of the first States to get the giant Canada Goose (decades ago), which at one time were considered to be extinct. For years we have traded our geese to other States for Otters, Turkey's and various other species. They are residents year round. Pairs will mate, raise a brood and stay in family groups for most of the year, splitting up in the spring where adult pairs mate. I have about 15-18 living in my immediate area, and come fall, hundreds will stage across the river from my home. We have a liberal 5 bird per day September season that runs 15 days: 1st-15th. We've always had Wood ducks and our local Mallard population is growing, and that's a good thing. Birds that hatch here, stay here. Same as TX and many areas of the country. Many cities are having to harvest the over population of giant Canada's, dispite the PC crowd protesting and holding candle light prayer meetings. Did you ask for their passports?  Just an FYI.....they're called Canada geese, not Canadian geese(which may be true too if the Canada geese came down to see you from Canada). | |||
