An old Scandinavian saying goes like this: there is no such thing as bad weather. Only bad choices in clothing!

First thing I saw as I walked out the front door. There are cars underneath.



The lass has learned that we can have big fun in fierce weather.



Playing around and taking in some local scenes on the way to the hunting spot.















On the way out, I noticed an elderly woman who had had a, "help I've fallen and I can't get up" moment. It might've been that she had decided to break out the CC skis after a 25 year hiatus. I of course picked her up and lifted her upright, then got her back onto some flat ground. I told her that I'd wait until she got her skis off before I left her. "For what?", she asked. "I'm having a blast, Gus!". I shook my head and said that if she got stuck again I'd be back in a couple of hours... :whistle:



First stop was for fuel. A wicked thick, rich and creamy fish and clam chowdah, piping hot, fits the bill perfectly.





To be eaten in a nice, comfortable, sheltered environment, naturally. If you're not from around here, that is. Eat fast, though.





Behold the power. That jetty is 12' high. Those breakers and swells are noticeably higher. A place for no man in a storm like this. Note the gull, however.









Now, time to set out and get my black duck. Most times, those who know the marsh here have a good hunch on where to find them. As the fabled Nor'Easters here blow from, obviously, the NE, provided you can find open water in an area that provides some measure of cover from the wind, you ought to be able to bag your black duck right quick. Limit is 1. There are other birds around, like these buffies, but I was after something I like to eat.



As I had neither dog nor boat handy, I knew I'd have to keep any birds I dropped into the drink and in the drink only. Birds crashing on the far bank or in the ice meant that I would be looking at a couple hours out there, in less than perfect conditions. It can be done, but to get across that creek requires a shyteshow hike of about a mile and a half, jumping creeks and wading the whole way. Not so much fun in jeans!

Well, damned if I didn't knock down a huge drake black duck, and the only one I knew I could hit alone, and NOT take two others along with it. Turns out some 60 blacks were laying up tight against the bank. Sonofa!

Arrgggh. Well, at least I was crafty enough to bring my striper rod, with a stout and heavy plug. Even in the heavy wind, I'd be able to retrieve the bird after some casting. And so it would be, right?



NOT SO FAST, SUCKER! My wife was yelling something at me as I stomped back to the truck, but I couldn't hear what she was exactly saying. I did, however, get that her frantic [pointing was meant to alert me to something going on behind me. Turns out what she was saying was, "A RAPTOR IS ABOUT TO EAT YOUR DUCK!"

Damn Leighton, that is rough weather. My (future) brother in law lives on Martha's Vineyard. He says it wasn't a beach day there either.

Could be worse . I am in Costa Rica with my fiancee . We are on our 4th day of solid rain. I have seen every inch of this hotel at least 20 times. I can't wait to get home and go hunting.

Nah, I figured fair is fair, and counted the harrier's lunch against my bag. It was a fair trade, I figure. I got some decent shots of him and he got a free lunch. Works for me.

leighton is a true die hard , when we were with him we didnt have terrible weather but it certainly wasnt warm - the guy is a polar bear !!!!

It would've been a quick hop on a plane for you. As I stayed with a friend who has plenty of room and open access to tons of private land where they just have amazing numbers of birds. Total cost was a plance ticket, 30 bucks or so for the duck tag, and a few bucks for beer.

Three hunts yielded over a day and a half saw 90 ducks and geese knocked down. Anyway, no biggie. I know you're a busy fellah. Maybe next time. Hope you're well, Ivan.
