What bullet would you use? I shoot a .50 caliber Omega. Been looking at 250-340 grains in Barnes, Swift, Precision Dead Center and Hornady MonoFlex.

I would use my slightly hardened paper patched Lee 500 S&W bullet. It weighs 460 grains and is a tack driver. I pushed one through a elk shoulder and found the bullet in her hip. I have seen a lot of animals killed with that bullet and that is thee only one that I have found.

Not that I've ever gone grizzly hunting.....of the bullets you mention I'd trust the Swift or call Wideners reloading supply for some .451 Nosler 300gr.Partition PP...I believe they still have some.....bearit....

You need to shoot a hardcast 500 or so grain bullet like a Maxi Ball or that hardcast 460 grain bullet for the 500 S&W. Learn to paper patch if you have to, but stay away from the lightweight jacketed cup and core bullets. You want to be sure you can shoot all the way through both shoulders or from chest to bung hole end to end if need be. You won't reliably get there with a 350 grain bullet. Last week we were hunting bison, and a friend shot a 3 year old bull in the chest with a 500 grain cast bullet pushed by 70 grains of 2f black powder using a 45-70 Sharps. The meat processor found the bullet in the bull's pelvis. It had penetrated 72 inches of bison front to rear by actual measurement. the 30-1 alloy bullet had lost 4 grains of weight.

smokepole paul....If you would decide to go with non cup and core bullets you can use whatever .458 bullet you have confidence in with a MMP orange sabot. My 25" barrel MZ gets about 2025fps. with a 300gr. over the max of Blackhorn 209....a fair amount of snot with a good bullet....regards ....bearit....

Thanks bearit....This will help. That's honking velocity for a 300 gr. bullet. I'll give it a try.

I would have no problem using this bullet for grizzly, it has proven it self many times already, best of both worlds, added trauma and penetration. https://cuttingedgebullets.com...ction&key=MZL_50_250 Simply, Elegant but always approachable

What Seasons44 said; Cutting Edge Bullets produce drastic trauma on big game. They proved themselves in Africa on all dangerous game and here is evidence of their effectiveness on medium game (deer). Bullet used was a .45 caliber CEB Raptor pushed by 100 grains of 777 powder (loose) at 120 yards. The photo below reveals what just one of the petals did to the off side shoulder blade. This next photo shows damage caused underneath the front facing shoulder. Main body of the CEB exited the far side but was snapped back into the wound channel by the elastic membrane. Buck dropped in his tracks. Good luck on your Griz hunt. What you shoot grizzly with is important no doubt but having a second rifle or two extra would be my advise..I would feel more comfortable with at least two 54 calibers on hand. I visualize myself trying to load a muzzle loader with a bear doing 40 miles an hour to eat my lunch!. I think you may wish you had another rifle other than an Omega when you to shooting 400+ grain bullets with heavy charges. WHUT?

I would use the same bullet I used for elk some years ago, It was a very heavy hard cast simi wadcutter specifically for my rifle. The bullets were made for me by a close friend, now deceased, who was a Muzzle loading fanatic, and a hell of a gunsmith..I think they were 500 gr. bullets but wouldn't swear to it..I know they sure would lay a elk, moose or bear down in a hurry..He shot a lot of elk and Moose with a round patch ball in his 50 and 54, If he needed more he woul drag out the demon, a 64 cal. or his 4 bore double..I shot the 4 bore once and only once..I vow it was grizzly medicine.
