The other side of the coin is that he is untrustworthy, makes things that he thinks his supporters want to hear up on the fly, and is a very poor excuse for a human being. He’s also incredibly insecure, petty and rather childish.

The majority of US voters have chosen to hold their noses and ignore his failings as a human being so we have to see how this works out.

You make a good point. The office of POTUS should carry with it integrity and honour, and it's difficult to see how this could be any less the case with Trump, the very antithesis of both.

By putting him where he is the US voters have shown that they don't much care about this though, which I find profoundly sad. The argument that "well all politicians lie" is not a justification for holding your nose and voting for him. Unless you hold people to account things will never change, and by ignoring it you enable it and are part of the problem.

Trump showed us his character and worldview more than adequately well in advance. Trump's toolbox does not include morality, honor, virtue, integrity. Trump has no options but to play dirty. We are here because enough people liked what they saw in Trump and Trumpism. That, more than Trump's character, will be the deciding factor in the outcome - long term. We can see what we have now and in the short term.

My hope is that young people, all people, reading the history in the making now won't have to explain or justify in the future. These sorts of movements work themselves out, and in the history books now we can read how and why, and I can't think of any that turned out like the initial trajectory predicted.

It's the damage and suffering NOW that matters. Do something about that and history will take care of itself. Wouldn't it be sad for future children to read that WE THE PEOPLE let it happen, and worse encouraged it to happen.

IMO, Trumpism is the result of some sort of national nihilism, to some degree religion induced, and certainly ideologically and worldview induced, fomented in several ways, like faux news, and from pulpits. No doubt Trump fed it with copious lies.

Until we the people wake up to that, the trajectory of this has only just begun.
