I read that the psycho had just been hired to be a school teacher in the area. No prior criminal offenses, no history of mental illness. Just went nuts for some reason.

Not to say I would have done any better under the circumstances but this is why I carry. Everywhere. The mugshot of the psycho says it all:

https://globalnews.ca/news/113...rkansas-new-details/

I read that the mom got the kids hidden after the initial attack and then went back to try to help her husband and was killed. Heartbreaking.

He ought to be taken out, forced to dig a grave and take a round to the head. Piece of shit.

The dogs are a bit of a problem, especially in the semi-rural south. To the point where in some areas, it made sense to be armed against a potential attack.
As far as the murderer is concerned, if I see someone who looks like that, I might be ready to shoot, just on general principle. Bill

That incident at a state park is spooky. I wish for more details. For example, did the guy attack with no provocation, no interaction other than use the knife?

I try to go camping often and mostly stay at state parks with a lake. I register a site by the lake if available. I figure they are pretty safe. Many of the parks have gates with access codes obtained when registering at the office.

I used to boondock sometimes, but not anymore. The state parks mostly are very affordable for a few days stay, and they have hookups so I don't need to use a generator for the AC or heat.

Stray dogs are less likely too. I don't recall seeing any in a state park.

But I often walk my dogs, leashed, so any dog I encounter off-leash is likely to visit. Could be ok, could be bad.

An option for protection from dogs might be one of those battery powered shock batons or cattle pods. That's non-lethal, quite, and seems to me would work. I don't know for sure since I've never tried one.

Another potential problem with camping near a lake is alligators, in the south. I never let my dogs near or play in the water. A shock baton or cattle prod would not work as alligator deterrent.

So, one reason I posted this topic was to see if anyone would mention carry.

I carry too, but not always. I think I need to develop the habit. I have options to choose from, some concealed, some OWB.

My favorite IWB is a S&W snubby featherweight 5 shot 38 spl.

My favorite OWB is a Glock 23 in 40 S&W.

I also have a 9mm H&K. It can go inside or outside waste band. I have holsters for either way. It's just heavy compared to the snubby.
But either the Glock or the H&K are much more accurate than the snubby.

I often fish from the bank when camping. So far I haven't had a problem carrying OWB at the campsite. I don't ask permission.

For protection from a bad guy, I believe in concealed carry for three reasons. One is surprise. IMO, carrying OWB is like an invitation to shoot me first, and/or have the weapon taken from me, and perhaps used on me.

We call them hotshots in Texas, and they work quite well on animals and humans.

That's funny because that is the literal bet. Smiler

Here's one that must be popular because the three sources I checked list this one, including Cabela's and Amazon:

Also there are several cattle or livestock prods.

I watched a video yeaterday that I considered posting the link. I watched the whole thing, which I seldom do, because it was that good. It was published by a young fella who knew a thing or two.

He was having problems with theft, and he figured the thief was local. So he put some of those air tags (I think that's wat they are called) on some stuff and some security cameras. Anyway those little devices allow tracking of whatever they are attached to.

Short story - he tracked the guy down. One security camera the thief didn't see recorded enough, such as vehicle, but the guy wore a mask and had removed the license plate. The thief spray painted over two cameras, but missed the hidden one.

Those air tags led the way. The young fella did not try to enter the thief's property. He called the cops, and they came out and investigated. After being shown the videos and the other evidence, and interview of the thief over the fence, they got a warrant in 20 minutes and two more investigators arrived to serve it.

The young fella got all his property back plus $1400 cash for the damaged cameras.

The thief was a normal looking white guy, age 60, living in a nice house in a subdivision. His wife had no clue, but she witnessed the whole search and recovery, and was super embarrassed.

The thief confessed, of course, caught red-handed. And apologized profusely on camera.

The young fella didn't press charges.

There were several things I learned from the video. Ya never know, for one thing. Also the value of those tracking devices, and the surveillance cameras. And, don't confront the thief, thus alerting him to hide the stuff better. And, let the cops do their job, and help them with evidence.

I've made police reports regarding theft more than once. In each case nothing became of it except they said they would investigate. They never followed up.

Once I actually caught two guys, father and son, stealing stuff from my nephew's house while he was gone. They got stuck in the yard because it had rained a lot lately and because they were pulling a trailer. I learned later that they got stuck trying to leave with the trailer loaded. They had been there a while when I discovered them. They threw all the load into the bushes, detached the trailer and had been digging.

I didn't scold them. I just acted benevolent and said I lived near and offered to pull them out with my tractor. I told them I was going to fetch it, but called my nephew instead.

Short story - the sheriff deputies came out, investigated, took names and such, and nephew called the most expensive wrecker service, who impounded the thief's SUV and the trailer.

Although the thieves were caught, nothing became of it. The only stuff recovered was in the bushes. And this was their second trip. They stole a washing machine and freezer an other stuff the first trip.

So, my experience with cops was very poor.

Likewise my experience with the police re theft has been poor.

In MN they very definitely put property crimes on the back burner. Especially in the Twin Cities metro area.

Knowing a bunch of cops it has more to do with department policies and asset allocation.

As to the initial reported events, no, that hasn’t been a big deal up here.

Having used a cattle prod (once) while it worked, it wasn’t absolute deterrent… a bad mannered cow would shy from it, but still wanted to do what she wanted to do.

The trip to the meat locker sorted that out.

No local cops here, only state troopers. They will not come.
Caught a fellow coming out of the shop with two chainsaws. Broke his right elbow and left wrist.
I wanted him to have someone wipe his ass awhile thinking about things that got him in that pickle. Nothing attempted stolen, years since.
Most cattle respect electricity. You will get one or two who will brush it with their whiskers to see if the juice is on.
Moose dont care at all. They will walk through electric fence and pop insulators or snap posts until the get clear.
The two south african fellows I told about the goat story, had a good fence story too.
One of the guys farm had a new seeded green field they had planted. They ran a multi strand electric fence around it, to keep cattle and kudu, nyala and such out.
He said the warthogs would come out of the bush, and run full tilt. They knew the fence would hurt, but were going in anyway. He said before they got to the fence they would start squealing, REEEEE REEEE REEEEE, because they knew they were about to get zapped!

I found the video that I mentioned above, in case anyone wants to watch/listen to it.

From tracking down the culprit to getting my items back, this is the story of how I caught the person who stole from me. The ending is a reminder that even bad choices can lead to important second chances.

My bad.

That being said, there are a lot more egregious targets than my grammatical errors if you want to be the style enforcement agency.
