Why would one bother with Alcatraz?

Sure seems like a great use for some Trans-Pecos counties in West Texas -- Make the prison the safest place to be in the couple hundred sq/mile county -

plenty of sunshine for solar power !!

I like the idea.
I've been there and lived locally. I say pour a bunch of money in an American institution and make some American criminals do some hard time.

I know someone who works at San Quintin teaching High School diploma. GED I think they call it. San Quintin is no longer max security but some kind of re covery or rejuvenation facility. Fine and neato. Alcatraz can be the latest Supermax. What's the acronym? FARAFO?

I say sell the island to Elon Musk for office space. Use the sales funds to convert a cargo ship into a prison and park it in shark infested waters. Use the prison labor to do the low importance manufacturing jobs from what we were importing from China.

If the current supermax is adequately secure, I see no need to take a place (absent it being a prison) that billionaires would spend hundreds of millions of dollars to place a home on to make a prison.

We can make prisons secure. That costs money.

Is it worthwhile? That’s a public policy debate. In my mind you put a prison where it’s fiscally most reasonable. I don’t GAF where the inmates would rather be… it’s a prison.
