On the surface Trumps done well! While Europe I think can claim damage limitation.

Underneath Id say Europe has agreed to buy the things it currently needs anyway, Weapons and energy.

If I were a guessing man Id say they will work on becoming more self sufficient in those aspects and this gives them time.

Yeah, I'm afraid the US has hurt its longterm national interests in exchange for some short term puffery and gratification of the egotist in chief.

From what I see so far, it seems both parties are relatively happy. So maybe a reasonable compromise. I think though time will tell and I wonder how much Europe is just waiting for a change in govt?

Everybody smiles, everybody shakes hands for the cameras, Trump gets to boast - about something that’s not on paper and has not been ratified by either group of legislators.

The International community has learned how to handle the Petulant Child King. Pat him on the head, tell him how great he is, and send him on his way while quietly establishing serious trade connections with mentally competent countries.

They all know he’ll change his mind twice before his plane lands anyway.

For us this is not a bad thing. It has definitely given bilateral free trade deals a sense of urgency in many nations.

We have recently completed deals with the UAE, The Uk, and are moving forward with India And Mexico/South America, While our dispute with Canada over access for our dairy products got quickly resolved for some reason.

You do realize that the dairy product tariff (duly ratified in NAFTA) was set to kick in at a level that was Never. Once. Reached.

It was just an issue that Trump latched onto for an excuse to bitch and play his crooked games.

There is no ‘urgency’ - there’s only a strategy to mollify a pathological liar and dangerous heavily armed megalomaniac until the world sheds itself of him.

Im not versed well in NAFTA to comment. We were at loggerheads with Canada ourselves, and coincidently or not they accepted our position when this all happened. I simply have a suspicion the two are linked.

I’m not surprised. Deals that bypass the U.S. are proliferating. Everybody but the Americans win.

I guess time will tell. I suspect the long term looks shaky... But these concessions are also coming with the promises of massive investment in the US.
As you say, will they end up being ratified?

This is a good summary:

EU steel and aluminium will also continue to face a 50% tariff when sold into the US.

Yep a good summary.

Do you think Europe is betting on the tariffs being temporary?

Yes, each individual nation has to sign off.

I do not know. I think the EU, more or less, decided someone had to prevent a near international economic collapse/crisis.

I think so ratification through legislation, these tariffs are going away. However, this S. Ct., majority has had one through line: expand the power of the Executive.

Trump and his team are not smart enough or thoughtful enough to care.

According to the BBC, the France is very disappointed in all this.

I expect member states will go along. The risk of breaking is just too high to everyone.

Europe has a long history, they can hold their collective breath for three and a half years...

Jtex would burn his house down just to get ash on his neighbor’s yard.

This is the most simple form I can find that Jtex still won’t read. After all, reading is for Commies.

Tariffs are dangerous. They are seductive as a simple solution, but there are no simple solutions.
