I guess he changed his mind, huh? CNN — Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick Ohio Sen. JD Vance was once a fervent critic of the former president. In private messages, he wondered ahead of Trump’s election whether he was “America’s Hitler” and in 2017 said the then-president was a “moral disaster.” In public, he agreed Trump was a “total fraud” who didn’t care about regular people and called him “reprehensible.” “I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler,” Vance wrote in a message to a friend in 2016. “How’s that for discouraging?” In 2016 and 2017, Vance, then best-known for penning the best-selling book “Hillbilly Elegy” said Trump was “cultural heroin” and “just another opioid” for Middle America. He told CNN ahead of the 2016 election that he was “definitely not” voting for Trump and he also contemplated voting for Hillary Clinton (he ultimately said he planned to vote for independent candidate Evan McMullin.) “Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us,” he tweeted after the “Access Hollywood” tape was published in 2016. https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/15...nts-trump/index.html -Every damn thing is your own fault if you are any good.

Normally I disagreed and usually vehemently with most things you say. This time I fear you might be pretty close to home here. He was not on my radar at all as a potential option. I really thought it would go another way. I see only two reasons for this pick. 1. It will energize his “base”. I would have thought he would have wanted someone that would have appealed to the undecided and any potential defectors. For me that choice would have been Tulsi Gabbard. 2. It’s a “defensive” pick. You want to jail me or I get taken out? Fine you get this guy. I honestly can’t come up with another reason for this pick. DRSS Kreighoff 470 NE Valmet 412 30/06 & 9.3x74R

People do change their minds. Well, SOME people have that ability... Notice the remarks were from before Trump's term - JD has said he saw how Trump served and now thinks differently. We could go back and pull quotes from 7 or 8 years ago by a lot of people and find the same thing. Recall Obama's "don't underestimate Joe Biden's ability to fuck things up". Kamala wasn't very complementary of Biden and she go the nod - of course that was an appeasement pick as an attempt to gloss over Biden's long history of questionable racial views. Hasher, I think you aren't seeing the bigger picture here. Vance is young, successful, and very smart. He will absolutely mop the floor in a debate with anyone on the D side especially Kamala. Trump has a good shot at winning the election and then Vance has a good shot at two terms after that. Probably the best choice of the lot.

In 2016, Trump wasn't on my list of choices in the primary. I was deeply suspicious of him but voted for him in the general. His actions in office made me into a supporter. So, yes, it's reasonable to change your mind. I hope his 180 is sincere, but the proof is in the pudding.

Mitchell, can you define what Kammi meant then when she called Pedo Joe a racist? Wait, don't. Just stay the hypocrite you always have been. That said Vance wasn't my choice. I kinda hoped trump would have surprised everyone and picked Tulsi Gabbard. I do think she would have been a bridge and appealed to many more people. I do think Vance will/would do a fine job. Did he? Since you and your dim-witted buddy Ann want to continue to push this bullshit, here's the quote I believe you rely on? If not, send me a link. https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-9244041620 CLAIM: California Sen. Kamala Harris called former Vice President Joe Biden a racist when they were facing off as potential Democratic candidates for president in 2019. AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Harris criticized Biden on certain topics related to race during a debate in June 2019, but she prefaced those remarks with “I do not believe you are a racist.” THE FACTS: In the moments after Biden announced he had selected Harris as his running mate in the 2020 presidential election, social media users seized on a heated exchange between the two politicians during a debate in Miami in June 2019. “So @JoeBiden just picked @KamalaHarris for his VP... She literally called him a racist! #wakeupamerica,” wrote one conservative personality in a tweet reposted nearly 3,000 times in an hour. Similar claims were made by prominent political figures including Katrina Pierson, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, in her response to Biden’s running mate pick. These claims are false. During the debate, Harris condemned Biden for working with segregationists in the Senate and for opposing aspects of mandatory busing for school desegregation. However, she began her critique by telling Biden “I do not believe you are a racist.” -Every damn thing is your own fault if you are any good.

I saw it myself. The question: whether he believed "it would be better for children if their parents stayed in violent marriages than if they divorced" and whether he was in favor of strengthening laws to make divorce more difficult with the following statement to Vice: Response by Vance: "I reject the premise of your bogus question. As anyone who studies these issues knows: domestic violence has skyrocketed in recent years, and is much higher among non-married couples. That's the 'trick' I reference: that domestic violence would somehow go down if progressives got what they want, when in fact modern society's war on families has made our domestic violence situation much worse. Any fair person would recognize I was criticizing the progressive frame on this issue, not embracing it." Maybe it worked out for the moms and dads, though I'm skeptical. But it really didn't work out for the kids of those marriages," Vance said, according to Vice. "And that's what I think all of us should be honest about, is we've run this experiment in real time. And what we have is a lot of very, very real family dysfunction that's making our kids unhappy." No the framing of the issue being whether it is better is not the issue. The issue is Vance’s world view. The Christian Right trying to force folks to stay in marriages by making them legally more difficult to obtain.

Not really. He said: “This is one of the great tricks that I think the sexual revolution pulled on the American populace, which is the idea that, like, ‘Well, OK, these marriages were fundamentally, you know, they were maybe even violent, but certainly they were unhappy. And so getting rid of them and making it easier for people to shift spouses like they change their underwear, that’s going to make people happier in the long term.’ “And maybe it worked out for the moms and dads, though I’m skeptical. But it really didn’t work out for the kids of those marriages.” His observation is backed up by the reality of the effect divorce, even divorce in strained marriages, has on children. Separation from a parent during childhood has been linked with heightened longer-term violence risk as the child grows older. So, I suppose it must be a choice of staying in and trying to mend a bad marriage, or dissolving the family and exposing the children to the greater likelihood that these children will face the disadvantages. "The best scientific literature to date suggests that, with the exception of parents faced with unresolvable marital violence, children fare better when parents work at maintaining the marriage. Consequently, society should make every effort to support healthy marriages and to discourage married couples from divorcing." I find it quite disheartening that we have so many obviously intelligent members here on AR whom make a habit of willfully mischaracterizing so much of what is presented into the public discourse. Where the hell has the understanding of context and nuance gone?

I find it disheartening that JD Vance feels he that he is in better position to decide if someone should divorce than the two people married to each other. Why on earth does his opinion matter when it comes to the decisions two consenting adults make?

He doesn't and his opinion doesn't. He was asked a question and he gave his answer. You see, this is another example of the mischaracterization I'm talking about. You think you know what's going through someone else's mind - you don't and I certainly don't. Why is it so difficult to simply digest what was asked and how it was answered and maybe even consider the context, experiences and background of the respondent taking it all into consideration? Your experiences are not the experinces of others and your viewpoints aren't going to align with everybody - we all know this.
