Putin says “jump” and Trump asks “how high?” on the way up. I almost feel sorry for him, having to be Putin’s bitch. Unfortunately, the entire western alliances are going to suffer for his subjugation while Putin is enjoying every minute of it. Sickening.

I dunno. Do we really need the number of bases we have? Is this the only base we have in Greece? This base is a glorified supply dump. That’s what a “regional logistic center” means in non- pentagon speech.

it is time for the western world to create a new alliance without usa for sure.

Good luck with that. The French can’t agree with anyone else in military matters. They would be the largest military group in Europe at this point. Germany would continue to refuse to deploy outside their borders. The UK and Canada while good militaries have drastically shrank for decades. I get what you are saying, and it certainly makes sense… but what happens with Turkey? They are a NATO member. How useful is this alliance when its members only react after a threat has been in being for years? Would you be able to do anything anywhere besides Europe? So if Canada was attacked, what help would they receive from this non-US western alliance? What help would NZ or Australia get? Fundamentally what you are getting at is if one country isn’t in lockstep with your policy, they are betraying the alliance? Again, Ukraine isn’t an ally. Yes, it’s the victim of aggression.
|

but you are right ukraine is not an ally (because your country did not want) nor russia up to today: that the putin empire became your friend... while the rest of NATO is telling your president it is wrong ... what else now you can invade canada as you set up a precedent ... we will not welcome you ...well...

Any Army or Air Force is only as good as its logistics. Tanks, artillery, aircraft all require many tons of ammo, fuel and parts to sustain operations. That was a huge part of what we spent months assembling in Saudi Arabia before we evicted Saddam, trying to conduct sustained operations with all logistics flying directly from CONUS is impractical, expensive and tactically unsound. When you run lower on bullets than targets a "glorified supply dump" hundreds rather than thousands of miles away is comforting. Of course, as a Republican you are happy to make our military dispositions however makes Vladimir Putin happy. "If you’re innocent why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”- Donald Trump

OK, so on getting home and off of a phone... It seems there is one base in Greece- Souda Bay. The things in Alexandroupoli is a Greek port with some shipping at it, not a base. Further, the DOD said we are not shutting anything down. I guess I don't know what to believe about all this now. Yes, you want supply dumps near where you need them, but they also need to be defended. Having one in Greece may make sense, but having numerous supply depots throughout Greece seems superfluous if we essentially are having a presence at every Greek shipping port- and looking at a map, there sure are a lot of them there.

I seem to understand we have military installations in half the nations on earth. We have a military footprint in 80 countries around the globe. That's just retarded. Do I, an American need a military base in Greece when I have 40 in Germany and at least one in Israel? I'm skeptical. The United States sends to sea 12 aircraft carriers and more than 50 submarines. What is this overwhelming need to have boots in the dirt bases in Greece or anywhere else?

Maybe it had something to do with Cold War era and now that it is no more it might even be a good move to shut down the bases in Turkey as Erdogan has proven to be somewhat untrustworthy. It might even be worth considering kicking Turkey out of NATO - for many a good reason. ![]()

Those aircraft carriers, and their dozen or so escort ships, totaling tens of thousands of sailors, have to be constantly resupplied. Logistics bases located at shipping ports, strangely enough, turn out to be fairly useful for that. "If you’re innocent why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”- Donald Trump

We have bases in more places now than we did during the Cold War, although generally much smaller. In Germany we went from 270+ to 40 or so, some of which are recreational facilities for our troops. "If you’re innocent why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”- Donald Trump

Dr. Butler, Our neighbors to the North seem to really believe that if, they were attacked, we'd just watch. They say that after watching Russia invade Ukraine and take significant territory, twice, both under Democrat Presidents. Truth be told, Canada really can't even defend themselves without a robust USA military brotherhood. Just look at the list of military assets I listed last week, juxtaposed to the Canadian military assets. The Taliban took no actions after Trumps meeting with them, Russia didn't engage in military adventurism, China stayed away from Taiwan, Iran was neutered and NK was quiet. All these things that the world seem to fear under Trump, actually occurred under Biden. To make matters worse, Biden actually helped fund Iran, which in reality funds, Hamaa, Hezbola and the Houthis in Yemen. Those are simply facts that cannot be denied. The Democrats scream about our obtuse and overinflated military spending, yet when Trump actually cuts the fat, they all of a sudden sound like Hawks. The NATO relationship with Turkey is a tough one. They've always tried to ride the fence between NATO alliance and allies with Russia.I believe they are untrustworthy were it to come to war, and choosing sides. And as far as Ukraine being an ally, and Trump being pals with Putin - There is pretty solid evidence that the Biden's, at least Hunter, were in the business of selling influence with Ukraine, yet the Democrats say...Where's the proof? Trump works closely with Putin, with no evidence or even accusations, that he's enriching himself somehow and he's Putins puppet? I'm confused. Formerly "Nganga"

Remember the Cuban missile crisis? If one of Putins asks to end the war in Ukraine is closing the base in Greece, I'd say yes as well. America doesn't need that base to continue to project global power. Ending this war is a must. All sides, INCLUDING the USA will have to give something, otherwise, the war will escalate. The interesting part about this sub-forums dislike of Trumps military engagement. He wants to increase our footprint to protect the Northern Passage via Greenland and you mock him. https://www.usni.org/magazines...perate-defend-arctic Same with the Panama canal. It is 10000% vital to our national defense that China does not control the mechanics of the canal. Those that want to argue these last two points, are not being consistent. Either Trump doesn't care about global security, or he does, either way the left is unhappy. Formerly "Nganga"

No, that version of the world would be armed with our own nukes. Australia was well down that path, Testing and developing on behalf of the UK, and not far from where I currently live is an identified uranium deposit which had the initial test mines prepared when we felt we needed it.

No I am not. But I am “for” having the bases being continually reassessed by DOD for their relevance and necessity in regards to US national security. I find it hard to buy that we needed to dispose of several bases in Germany but continue to have small low level detachments in hundreds of sites throughout Europe. It seemed more like the Germans wanted those bases for their internal economy until the bear stopped hibernating. Now we has small, poorly defended bases all over Europe. I get the desire of the Europeans for there to be a U.S. tripwire (what Trump is doing now shows why it’s a good idea) but then maybe there should be some thought to what it benefits us for it being done.

I dont think some of you can read the room. The west outside of America is as MEdved says, looking at how much it can trust the US now, and making its own plans in case things go down a certain path. And it's not that the US wishes to pull back from its commitments. That's understandable. Its the way its being done.

first problem with the OP... The US doesn't have a military base in Alexandroupoli.. It is a Greek Naval installation that the US has assets at.. no different than JTF Bravo at Soto Cano, Honduras, and many other FOREIGN military bases where we put a handful of troops to support either our regional operations or the local governments needs and requests for assistance.. We cant close a military installation that we don't own.. second problem with the OP.. Alexandroupolis has never been a permanent location for US military personnel.. unlike Soto Cano in Honduras where we have been continually positioned for decades, we put people into Alexandroupolis at times when we need them to be there, and pull them out when they are not needed.. third issue... US facilities at Alexandroupolis have a MAXIMUM CAPACITY to house about 300 people.. and has NEVER been housed to capacity. Most of the time we're looking at a dozen or so personnel there temporarily to accomplish a specific mission.. fourth issue.. the turks are who have made repeated demands that we stop conducting regional logistics operations out of Alexandroupoli.. not the Russians.. "we're closing bases in Greece!" is much ado about nothing.. just click bait to obtain outrage about something that doesn't matter..

so it is because the turks or the russians that you are closing your hub? from what i gathered the hub was useful for nato and usaf so what they will use now? a turkish base or something in crimea or russia land somewhere?
|
One of Us![]() |
reading is fundamental... the greek produced article has already been debunked by both the Greek government and the US government... its false.. nothing more than click bait.. the "hub" is some allotted space on a Greek naval base.. that is typically used by the US Army, although other services have used it as well, for moving stuff around the region.. that allotted space still exists.. THe US has never occupied that space on a full time basis.. it simply uses it as it is needed.. It has never been a major "hub".. and there are several (dozens) other "hubs" located throughout Europe and across the Med.. Even if the US chose not to continue to use the space, what would that have to do with NATO usefulness? Any nato country could use the space that Greece has if Greece chooses to allow it…
