The closing statements are next.

So far, I expect someone is counting. I think Trump has set a new record for lies in the time span. But then he repeated some of them several times.

It's tough to watch Trump rant. I noticed that he didn't answer a single question, but instead deflected off into his la la land of grievances and lies.

I think Harris won, by far.

Looks to me like she’s exposing him for the addled buffoon and idiot that he is. He hasn’t described a single plan or policy; Harris has stated a clear and detailed platform.

He just repeated his crazy rants and blatant falsehoods over and over.

I didn't see any platform, just platitudes. Donald was Donald, I suspect not many minds were changed.

Just to be clear, I intensely dislike the Democrat stance on the economy, I dislike their social agenda, and I dislike their foreign policies. Nonetheless, Kamala Harris is coming across as calm, reasonable, and intelligent. Trump is coming across as inarticulate, argumentative, and incompetent.
Tonight, Republicans should be feeling the same sinking feeling that Democrats were feeling after the Trump/Biden debacle. The Republicans nominated the wrong man and thanks to that, we are very likely to end up with a Democrat, and a poor one at that.
We always knew that Trump was a poor speaker, and is unable to stay on point, so we couldn't really expect anything else. Still, that is what he needed to do, and he failed.
Nonetheless, Trump's followers will see his performance as assertive and masterful. It was not. Regards, Bill.

^^ This.

I suspect most of the noise you will hear from the Trump sycophants will be about the moderators. But rest assured, they know their man did not have a good night. Frankly he came across exactly how he is, e.g., angry, divisive, uninformed, rambling, etc.

I had hoped for a reasoned discussion of the nation's problems, its aspirations, and alternative plans for its future.
This was not to be. The two of them exchanged cheap shots and platitudes, tired ones at that.
Harris did briefly describe three tax giveaways, ones that might return on the investment, but offered no details.
Neither wanted to discuss hard choices with unwelcome costs, the perhaps unavoidable consequences of past decision-making.

A wasted opportunity.

Hunter Thompson had it right. As long as we're willing to vote for the lesser of two evils, the evils will get worse.

From the opening question, Harris avoided the question. She was asked a simple question, "Are the American people better off econ0mically today than they were when you took office?" She never answered it. The clear answer is "NO".

She simply launched into her "plan" for an "economy of opportunity" which she hasn't really fleshed out. Except that she says she would give $6,000 to new parents, $25,000 to first time homeowners and a $50,000 tax credit to people who start a new business. No real plan, just more freebies.

Who is going to pay for all these great plans? That would just increase the deficit. And, let's talk about the new homeowner policy. From a tax theory standpoint, there should not even be a home interest deduction. It makes no sense, but the American people love it so we have it in the Tax Code. Why make it worse by offering money to new homebuyers at government expense?

Haven't checked lately, but last I checked, approximately 80% of new businesses fail. So why offer a $50,000 tax credit to new businesses. Much better plan would be to offer a one-year tax moratorium on federal taxes, other than payroll taxes, to new businesses. If they go bust, you aren't giving up anything, but you are helping their cash flow for a year and that could help create jobs.

Cutting taxes for proven job-creators has a proven track record of creating jobs, but Harris opposes that. When Reagan did it, it increased tax revenue.

The other thing that needs to be done is to offer tax benefits to companies re-patriating business to the US. There is a lot of profits sitting overseas, and jobs sitting overseas, which could be fixed by that. Allow companies to bring those profits back to the US at a tax discount, and you would realize a revenue bump.

That's a plan, albeit sketchy, but Harris has no plan.

Reagan blew the deficit out of the water & is the architect of normalizing huge deficits as OK. He knew his tax cuts were a fuck up. Wanna guess how many times he increased taxes right afterwards? I like how you deflected from trump, who offered not a damn thing, to Reagan, tho.

This should have been an easy debate for Trump. The Biden/Harris record sux. He could have defused the abortion issue by simply repeating that it was now up to the people, not the politicians. True or not, that would have worked. He just doesn't know how to shut his mouth. He is absolutely unable to accept responsibility for his blunders, and he'll lie when the truth would suit better. While I think he is probably better for the country, I fear that he is just not electable.
Things are looking dark for the future. Bill

I noticed that neither candidate answered most of the questions. When they did address the question, it was momentary, and they soon veered off to the points they each wanted to make.

It wasn't much of a debate really...but she looked and sounded better than he did.

You know what is funny about it is that she really didn't have to do anything. Don't get me wrong, I thought her performance was fine. But, the story of the debate is always going to be him just melting down and acting like the angry old fool that he has become....and, of course the lies....and the narcissistic preening.

all she really had to do was just feed him enough rope to hang himself....and, he did. And, she did it with style and grace.

I doubt whether the debate will make a difference in the election but he took an ass-kicking last night. No doubt about it.

There are many articles out there on this. Too many. Some try to be fair. Some feed bias. I looked for ONE article that says the concise summary. The thing that can't be said enough and have too much significance attached is the fact that Trump lied so much, made claims stated as fact with no foundation in fact, and the exact opposite of fact, and the negative American Carnage theme. In particular his lie about project 2025. His short statement about Orban made his admiration for authoritarians apparent. Of course, two insane lies were about killing children after birth and the dog/cat eating.

Drudge Report Sums Up Donald Trump's Debate Performance With 2 Final Words
Story by Lee Moran • 5h • 1 min read

“The End.”

Those are the two words the conservative Drudge Report website posted as its main headline on Tuesday night following Donald Trump’s widely-panned performance in the presidential debate against Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.

The short headline sat underneath an AI-generated image of Trump surrounded by animals (cats mostly and a duck) on what appeared to be an airplane.

It linked to Mediaite’s coverage of Trump being fact-checked during the debate for pushing a debunked story that migrants in Ohio are eating people’s pets.

‘They’re Eating the Pets!’ Trump Shouts About Fake Pet-Eating Story at Debate and Gets Brutally Fact-Checked

ABC debate moderators live fact-checked Trump’s false claims from the stage
Story by Hadas Gold, CNN • 2h • 4 min read

Roughly 20 minutes into the debate, the former president claimed Democrats have advocated for abortion in the ninth month of pregnancy or were in favor of “executing” babies “after birth,” pushing a notorious and often-repeated false claim. Harris’ running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, has said “execution after birth is OK,” Trump falsely claimed.

Moderator Linsey Davis immediately corrected the record on the abortion issue. “There is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it’s born,” she said.

Later in the debate, Trump falsely claimed migrants in Ohio were killing pets and eating them, repeating a debunked claim that had been amplified this week by right-wing media figures and echoed by Republican leaders.

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs,” Trump said. “The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country and it’s a shame.”

Muir quickly corrected Trump on the claim.

“I just want to clarify here. You bring up Springfield, Ohio. ABC News did reach out to the city manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”

“Well, I’ve seen people on television,” Trump argued. “The people on television say my dog was taken and used for food. So maybe he said that and maybe that’s a good thing to say for a city manager.”

“I’m not taking this from television. I’m taking this from the city manager,” Muir responded.

“People are on television saying the dog was eaten by the people that went there,” Trump said.

“Again, the Springfield city manager says there’s no evidence of that,” Muir replied.

‘Disaster’: Lindsey Graham Says ‘Unprepared’ Trump Should Fire His Debate Team
Michael LucianoSep 10th, 2024, 11:39 pm

There's irony in this. Graham just doesn't get it, but that's not a new thing for him.

His Debate Team won't be needed anymore. It's no surprise that Trump refused a second debate, plus when he loses the election such people won't be re-purposed. Maybe they can bake cookies for him and bring them to the jail.

And firing the team is absurd in light of the fact that Trump won't take advice, even if he could. He won't even take advice from the national security team briefings, now, or when he was in office, or ever. He's thinks he knows best on all matters.

And the security briefs he listens to are from people like Orban and Putin.
