I’m struggling to believe this.

Parents can really think this is pornography?

Am I right in thinking 6th grade is going to be kids who are 12 years old, so right on the edge of puberty? I wonder what these kids are taught in biology …

You are struggling now?

Most of the non Western world is tearing their hair out at the utter stupidity of what is going on in the West!

Somewhere on the net today, an individual was seen on CCTV going into a fenced area and answering the call of nature.

The police are looking for him!!??

The druggies filling the streets are not botehred!

Not filled up but the loud minority have gone off the rails. The vast majority of the country sees them for what they are, nutters.

I’m struggling to believe it because it is happening in the west.

Numerous aspects of daily life in non western countries are 1000s of times worse but it’s not surprising purely because that crap is the norm in non western countries.

Forbidding girls from going to school, FGM as a cultural norm, destroying statues which are hundreds of years old for religious reasons, murdering girls because of “family honour”, women who can’t drive a car or travel without a husbands permission …. Welcome to the non western world! The list is endless Saeed.

The west is the west purely because shit like that in the article about David is unusual.

Yes Saeed, here in the West we pine away for stability and sanity such as you have in the Middle east. Libya, Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Yemen, Iran, Iraq. No doubt about it, you folks in ME have it all figured out and the rest of the world is sitting by wondering how we could be just like you. What we need is a Petrol Prince to save us.

You are worried about a woman taking a leak in someone's garden, yet no comment on these type of stories happening in your neck of the woods. Such a peaceful religion...

The Arab Spring was totally our fault, never should have tried to enlighten a bunch of heathens, we should have known better. Some folks just can't be trusted to administer their own affairs and need a despot to keep them in line. Applicable to both Libya and Iraq.

And yet no comment about the story of the beheadings of the truffle hunters by the the Jihadists likely educated in the Paki Madrassas that your family has funded.

I won't even comment on the hypocrisy clap

The article says resigns…not fired.

And to the OP…in 6th grade…that sculpture was an inappropriate example to use in class. Simply no need when plenty of other non-controversial examples could be used.

It is appropriate for high school.

Total BS Lane. She was given a choice alight:

"The school board's chair, Barney Bishop, told Carrasquilla that she could either quit or be fired"

If you think 6th graders have not see worse than "David" then you are living under a rock. Children in Europe are exposed to art like this from birth with no apparent ill effects.

What should be controversial is the level of nutty "parental involvement" in school curriculum has become. In Florida the text books had to remove any reference to Rosa Parks being black. The Holy Rollers are trying to rewrite history and it is appalling.

This is just another sign of the culture war run amok.

Never said some haven’t seen worse. Some have and some haven’t.

No point in using that example of art in a sub High School curriculum. Plenty of other examples.

People who push the envelope with such shouldn’t be teaching 6th graders.

People who disagree with that^^^…

Are you saying WDM Bell's works are common literature and should be taught in elementary school?

I don't disagree that Michelangelo's sculpture is art.

Are you saying that "the Piss Christ" is art? That it should be shown to elementary schoolkids?

On the other hand, as I recall the discussions about Michelangelo's sculpture from university art appreciation, the rationale for discussing Michelangelo was way above what you will hear in a elementary school class. A nude at that age is much more about shock value and trying to get kids interested in the subject for prurient reasons as opposed to artistic.

Age appropriate exists. It involves what level of knowledge the kids have at that point. While I can grant that there may be a very few especially gifted kids that might be able to appreciate Michelangelo's sculpture as art at that age, the vast majority are making juvenile dick jokes.

Since public education is about raising the education of the average, this seems rather obviously inappropriate unless it is some sort of specialized AP class.

Is it worth firing the principal over? Only if it is yet another example of poor decision making.

It speaks to a lack of appropriate professional decision making, not lack of taste or an absence of understanding what art is.

Im not American and I wasn't sure how old 6th grade kids are but my wife says 12 years old. These are kids who are on the cusp of puberty, and you want to "shelter "them from the naked human form ... because that's all it is, it's not pornography, it's not salacious, its just the human form.

God alone knows what those kids get taught in biology, or is human reproduction porn too?

The vast majority of kids that age will have looked at porn on the internet. By trying to pretend anything below the waist doesn't exist you are not doing them any favours.

My brother in law from Idaho was a school principal and demoted after he exposed students on a trip to Italy to pornography, according to the complaining parents.
They had visited the sistine chapel, the heart of the church, but there are naked breasts on the paintings.

You have to remember that Republicans don’t procreate sexually, as they find genitalia, especially penises, to be frightening. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that they always stare at the ceiling when they pee.

I’m not sure exactly how they do it, but rumour has it they just pray really hard and then invite the preacher for an overnight visit while the husband stays in the barn that night to pray.

It’s miraculous.

Some of y’all must need to go back to the 6th grade and learn some reading comprehension instead of looking at male genitalia.

I saw no mention in the OP or by me of banning any art or books. 2020

Plenty of subject matter to use for example in 6th grade art without choosing that one. It was poor judgment.

High School would be appropriate not 6th grade. It appears that School Board exercised good judgement.

Further, the School Board is elected by the people of that district. They get to make that call. The will of the local community was expressed…just as it should be. The article was a success story of our system.

Horse Shit Lane. The David is one of the best known pieces of art ever created. Hardly pornagraphic, not inappropriate in the least.

What was poor judgement was to small minded moron's who ousted the teacher.

You saw no mention of banning art or books, yet a teacher was forced to resign for showing art to children. Maybe not banned but you will lose your job. Pretty much the same thing.

This whole parental rights movement is nothing but more culture war crap being pushed from the right. Exactly what DeSantis is planning on running on.

It’s when the tail is allowed to wag the dog. A class of 30? kids and it appears one or two parents are of the view that genitalia does not exist until high school. And those one or two set the standard everyone else has to live by.

Hardly a shining example of democratic process Lane. The teacher gets the boot and now what every other kid in the class is taught is defined by the views of a handful of modern day puritans.

I think my kids had sex ed around that age, certainly by 13.

Sex is natural. It is certainly more appropriate behavior then the “Conservatives do not complain about like killing indigenous people.

Sex is certainly no more dangerous than a firearm.

These parents have a right to shield their children from sex if they wish. Although that is stupid and misguided.

David is not even about sex. What they should not have a right to do is define sex for everyone. Again, the David is not snout sex. If you find it offensive. That is your problem.

I have no problem with a 12 year old seeing David. Hell, I was reading medical books at that age from my mom going to nursing school.

I agree with SKB. My adopted mom was giving lectures for the County Board of Health she ran in puberty in the 6th grade.

SKB is right. Adults need to grow up.

If a child is old enough to kill a deer with an AR or 30/06, or watch animals die. They are old enough to know how babies are made.

I remember when the “Left” was trying to ban Heart of Darkness for its use of language and perceived Colonialism from public libraries, school libraries, and from being taught.

I remember Conservatives rightly stood up against that.

Yet, it appears for some percentage of those “Conservatives” now driving this bus that stance was based purely on politics and liking the subject matter.

I would much rather my 12 year old view and be taught the David than Jefferson Davis.

Nuts is what it is.

Nuts? Look in the mirror.

Plenty…I mean unlimited sculptures…to use for art examples to 12 year olds without picking that one. It was a clear-cut case of poor judgement…thus a clear-cut reason for reprimand.

Teachers and administration works for the school-board. School Board elected by the community. System worked as designed. Kudos to this board.

Why pick the David? It is only of of if not the most widely known example of Michelangelo's art. There is NOTHING inappropriate about the David....NOTHING.

What is nuts is you folks trying to push your ridiculous views upon the rest of us.

Parental rights are nothing more that culture war bullshit. I am so happy to see the pushback.

I think this is a loser issue, among many others, for the GOP. What a sad, sad group you have become.

Hardly a shining example of democratic process Lane. The teacher gets the boot and now what every other kid in the class is taught is defined by the views of a handful of modern day puritans.

I think my kids had sex ed around that age, certainly by 13.

Being an administrator means exercising good judgment. There was no “need” to use that particular sculpture in class for art as an example in this age group. Thousands of more appropriate examples could have been used and the kids been just as well educated.

This administrator knew 100% it might spark controversy (if not…a very dumb professional and should have been removed for being dumb). Knowing that and forging ahead made this person a poor administrator — cause to remove.

Only controversial among those of us that have lost their ever loving minds over religion. Those of us who remain sane see zero controversy in the David.

If the community doesn’t like the decision…they can elect different school board members.

There is no need for controversial teaching in 6th grade. Teach the kids the basics — well. Leave nude art to high school and beyond.

School board made a good judgement. The administrator exercised poor judgment.
