WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - U.S. consumer prices increased by the most in nearly 1-1/2 years in January, with Americans facing higher costs for a range of goods and services, reinforcing the Federal Reserve's message that it was in no rush to resume cutting interest rates amid growing uncertainty over the economy.
The hotter-than-expected inflation reported by the Labor Department on Wednesday was likely partly due to businesses raising prices at the start of the year, evident in a record surge in the cost of prescription medication and an increase in motor vehicle insurance.

Higher metal prices just like I said.

Feb 24 (Reuters) - The price of the steel Glen Calder buys for his small machinery factory in South Carolina has spiked over 15% in the last two weeks, while Brian Nelson’s factory halfway across the country in Illinois can’t get its suppliers to quote him current prices at all.

I seem to recall oj made a lot of promises. End the war in Ukraine and Gaza on day one. Stop inflation in its tracks at the same time. Sounds a lot like the “chicken in every pot” promise made during the Depression……. coffee

Well, inflation was going down while Biden was still president. Get your metal company stocks bought now, because prices are going to go higher. Glad no one needs to by rebar.

no sir, never, not once did inflation "go down" under biden -- not a single month showed a negative inflation rate -- i'll admit there are months that it didn't go up AS MUCH, when initially reported, but it NEVER once went down --

here, let me illustrate, along the lines of a number line

-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 (Biden was never REPORTED at being lower than this, not once) 3, 4, 5

of, and the months where the INCREASE was reported in the 2.x? oh, those were revised the next month or so to show higher

More tariffs on the way too, but this the good kind of inflation, it was brought to us by Trump's policies not Biden's.

My January trends report:
As of January 2025, the annual inflation rate rose to 3.0%, up from 2.9% in December 2024, marking the highest level since June 2024. This uptick follows a trend of rising prices over the past few months, with a notable monthly increase of 0.5% in January, the largest since August 2023. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also increased to 3.3% year-over-year, indicating broader price pressures across various sectors like shelter, groceries, and energy. While inflation has cooled significantly from its peak of 9.1% in June 2022, recent data suggests it’s not only persisting above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target but also showing signs of re-acceleration in early 2025.

Nah, you are just starting to feel the Trump effect, buckle up because these tariffs if implemented will be far worse than the inflation under Biden.

News flash: tariffs and the "dept of external revenue" are really just an unlegislated flat tax pushing the burden of funding the government on to the lower income brackets. Someone needs to pay for the tax cuts that the wealthy are receiving.

The poor spend a disproportionate amount of their income on living expenses. The rich have been gifted lower tax rates by the GOP since 1980, and it is never enough for them. The top tax bracket has seen its rate reduced by nearly 50% while the budget deficit and income inequality have risen.

Why is it the job of the wealthy to subsidize the poor?

Mike, I'll give you a long winded example that hit my business pretty hard.

I was a very large Gates Rubber distributor. Gates was historically based in Denver, domestic production, a very American company.

Sometime about 2010ish, they began to move some domestic production away from small American towns like Galesburg Virginia, Iola Kansas and started plants in China.

We as distributors complained, as our prices never went down, even though they sent us product made overseas.

As time went by, the Chinese began sending cheap hose and couplings to America. The quality sucked but it was cheap. Since the Gates plants had to hire Chinese workers and were essentially partners with the CCP, they actually trained their competitors to make quality products.

So now, the Chinese stuff is as good as the Gates stuff and costs a fraction of it. The Chinese are subsidizing those products and literally dumping them on America.

Now, if you go to John Deere, Caterpillar Allis, Komatsu, or ANY other large global equipment manufacturer, you simply cannot find domestic product (Aeroquip, Parker or Gates) on any of them.

Tariffs in these cases is really the only way to compete with a country the essentially nationalizes it production and dumps product.

Now, the domestics all have cheaper alternatives to what they call their legacy products. China, Mexico, Vietnam are all places they've turned to. Point being American product can't compete.

In meetings Gates would lecture us (distributors) that WE drove them to it by demanding cheaper prices, when in reality, their corporate greed drove them. We never benefited from lower prices on their original Chinese products.

I'm sure the metals industry is the same or similar.

Yes, they are sort of taxes. But with every tariff, two parties suffer a little.
The tariffs for Mexico make the US and Mexico suffer a little.
The tariffs for Canada make the US and Canada suffer a little.
The tariffs for China make the US and China suffer a little.
The tariffs for the EU make the US and the EU suffer a little.
Guess who suffers most in the end?

Not exactly. We have surplus in our steel industry and can in fact add more production to replace the Canadian steel that we currently import, albeit at a higher cost. We do not have a domestic aluminum industry, we import our aluminum and will continue to do so, just at a much higher cost after tariffs. It might only be a few pennies on a beer can but a ford F150 or a Boeing jet and those tariffs really start to sting.

Consumers. That’s why most economists view them as taxes, because consumers end up bearing them. I guess Trump has to find a way to raise taxes to fund his tax relief plan for his golf club buddies. MAGAts eat it up.

Worse might be that it incentives those other countries to make tradedeals for the goods Trumps creates tariffs for.
Tariffs on steel from Canada and the EU? Good time for the EU and Canada to do a tradedeal on that, so both markets outcompete the US without needing them anymore for either supply or demand.

Tariffs are not taxes.. words have meaning. I don't go to jail if I don't buy anything with (effectively not paying) a tariff

Chalk and cheese, as someone if fond of saying...

If I use zero tax paid for products, i am still obligated to pay income tax

If I choose not to buy a thing subject to tariffs, no obligation

Only a mental midget would try to equate them.. they are similar, but so are apples and oranges.. both go in Fruit salad

Stevie
If i don't buy a thing, I don't pay sales tax on a thing.. the question was tax v tariff.. why don't you go look at dictionary.com and make a report where it says they are the same thing

But, by all means, your one trick it to move the goal posts and change the subject... oh, that and get all emotional, so two tricks

how's the dictionary.com task coming along? making progress?

i do find it adorable how a person says they aren't accountable to anyone, and can't be assigned tasks, and then tries to hold someone else accountable to tasks they assigned

next thing you know, steve will try to sell a savage 99 as a winchester lever action, as they are sorta kinda the same thing

Poor Jeffe, just can't admit that you are wrong. No surprise there.

Funny thing is, our govt sure enough considers tariffs to be taxes. Why that is almost as hard to square as supporting both Trump and Reagan in regards to Russia policy.

How are you coming along in showing that tariffs are not taxes? Not so good I'm thinking.

Poor thing, gets caught in a lie and just keeps on diggin

You sure are a dumb SOB.
