I maintain that Canada is one of our closest allies, regardless of the lack of NATO spending. The very same NATO that Trump is being accuses of not adhering to article 5, if it were to come to that.

One could objectively argue, why should America defend Canada if article 5 were invoked, since they have not honored their NATO commitment.

Trump has been in government for two and a bit months and has done more to damage NATO and other previously close relationships in that time than Putin has managed in his 20 or so years as Russian president.
