Tylenol. He and his stooge of an HHS secretary, RFK, Jr. have opined, against the overwhelming weight of scientific and medical research that Tylenol causes autism.

We'll set aside the fact that virtually every other country, scientific institution, physicians organizations, etc etc etc disagree with him:

https://www.nbcnews.com/world/...racetamol-rcna233133

And we'll also ignore the fact that he is so fucking stupid that he cannot even pronounce the word "acetaminophen". 2020

Except those are known to cause issues in pregnancy.

In essence, the old line I got in residency re OB remains the case- if at all possible, don’t take any drug while pregnant.

Acetaminophen is considered category A for pregnant women. No evidence of problems. That may change with this new study.

I’d consider the risk of an untreated fever and then this apparent risk of increased autism in those cases. It’s certainly not 100% causative, but any risk is worth avoiding the med for minor issues, bigger issues make it worth considering.

Note this wasn’t the smoking gun thimorosol connection the anti vax types were convinced was coming.

There are NO large scale studies showing Tylenol as a causative agent for autism. There is only Trump’s and RFK’s overactive imagination.

The one that Trump and RFK Jr are quoting.

I haven’t seen it.

If it’s made up, ok.

But this sounds like grounds to do a bigger study.

Heck, the lawyers got silicone implants banned with less.

They are referencing the one referenced in the article below.
https://www.politico.com/news/...-researcher-00575788

Here is a whole study.

https://ehjournal.biomedcentra...2940-025-01208-0.pdf

Here is a rebutted of the study detailing why it is not best methodology to arrive at its conclusions.

https://www.managedhealthcaree...not-the-best-science

There was a very large study of nearly 2,500 participants done a couple of years back. It concluded no causation. However, I’m dtill looking for it. Here it is.

https://jamanetwork.com/journa.../fullarticle/2817406

Just for good measure:

In a statement, Alycia Halladay, Ph.D., chief science officer at the Autism Science Foundation, said, “It is disingenuous and misleading to boil autism’s causes down to one simple thing. We know that autism is incredibly complicated, and we need to move away from studies that simplify it down to one exposure without any other considerations.” Notwithstanding all of the attention on acetaminophen, Kennedy said at today's press conference that autism is a complex disorder with a "multifactorial etiology." Kennedy said the potential link between autism and vaccines had been "actively suppressed" and that it would take time to investigate a vaccine-autism link

Doc, you got me there. MY bad. Not paying attention.

so, are there similar studies that support trump's statements about Tylenol?

Or not?

Do you tell your pregnant patients not to take Tylenol? I mean...before yesterday? I'm just a dumb lawyer. It seems like all the published studies don't support what trump and his anti-vax HHS secretary are advancing.

I told them to avoid taking anything if at all possible, but that Tylenol was the least likely to cause issues that we know of.

As to other studies, I haven’t seen any reputable ones that associate autism with anything. I haven’t seen the one that RFK and Trump are quoting, either.

I am aware of an autistic child who was born very premature by C-section because of pre-eclampsia.
Spent the first six months lying on back, staring face-up at ceiling.
Tylenol? Hmmm...probably not this one.

Jpshua, they are posting photos and video all over social media doing such. Also, I never said anything about not including genetics, age or anything else. A lot of people don't eat healthy either, that too might be a problem. I am sure there are many possibilities. What I am commenting on is that there are pregnant women indeed downing tylenol to, I reckon, prove some point? So study them, their results.

I think most doctors warn prenatal patients to use as few medications as possible, no rec drugs, weed, alcohol, eat healthy, take vitamins, etc as much as possible. I am also not convinced overloading a baby's immune system with multi immuno injections at once is a good thing. Why not space them out such as one at a time?

Caution is better in my book.

Also, do you feel 2500 people quantify a sound source of data? Seems very limited to me.

Literally every doctor and accredited medical association has come out and said that there is no support for trump's assertions in relation to Tylenol.

Let's remember: this is the guy who suggested injecting bleach or disinfectant to fight COVID or to irradiate your body with UV light as a cure.

He's a fucking idiot. Why on earth would anybody take medical advice from this ass-clown versus their physician?

Only 15% of smokers develop lung cancer and 15% of lung cancer patients never smoked.
Is smoking correlative or causative?

The fact that acetaminophen is identified by John’s Hopkins no less, as a correlative factor in kids with ADHD and autism is worth noting.
These pregnant women taking unnecessary doses of Tylenol may indeed help to add to the data.

Ann, if I were TJ chug Tylenol I would be killing my liver.

I watched. They are not. Taking a Tylenol or two a month is not going to do anything.

It is amazing how well Women cdm manage their own health when Texas Horse Doctors stay out of it. Too bad Texas gives more power to the Trumps and horse doctors than women.

This is pure foolishness designed to distract you to. The mess Team has made the CDC.

If you are pregnant and have a fever, take the Tylenol.

Read the real study I province earlier. Conor’s methodologies. One has much more data, and better practice. It ain’t the one Trumo is citing.

There are peer reviewed published studies all over the place regarding prenatal acetaminophen exposure and behavioral problems.
Just need to go look.
Some correlative and some not - read them and take your pick I guess…

There are too many variables and too wide a spectrum of diagnosis to ever really know with certainty what are the true causes of Autism.

The notion that the science is ever settled is a mistake.
There are studies that correlate damn near anything to autism - drug use, diet, family history, environment, even some that link higher socioeconomic status to a higher prevalence.
Then, as expected, subsequent studies seem to show the opposite and then some confirm the earlier findings.

So, what can we glean from all of this?

In other news…
One pregnant woman downing Tylenol in defiance to Trump now on a ventilator and in liver failure.
That can’t be good for the baby…

So, I should take medical advice from our idiot president and people who post on the forum?

Medical science is uniform in rejecting the idea that there is any reliable scientific or medical evidence that Tylenol causes autism.

Those are facts.

It is astonishing that you believe every word that falls out of our idiot president's mouth. It's just like him saying yesterday that there is no Tylenol in Cuba and no autism. It is total bullshit that there is no autism in Cuba. He just makes shit up on the fly and you accept it as gospel.

Sure you don't.

I know that you and trump are certainly more knowledgeable on the topic than the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists ( you know....those folks that actually take care of pregnant women and their babies) but just for grins, let's see what they say:

“Suggestions that acetaminophen use in pregnancy causes autism are not only highly concerning to clinicians but also irresponsible when considering the harmful and confusing message they send to pregnant patients, including those who may need to rely on this beneficial medicine during pregnancy.

“Today’s announcement by HHS is not backed by the full body of scientific evidence and dangerously simplifies the many and complex causes of neurologic challenges in children. It is highly unsettling that our federal health agencies are willing to make an announcement that will affect the health and well-being of millions of people without the backing of reliable data.

“In more than two decades of research on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any trimester of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in children. In fact, the two highest-quality studies on this subject—one of which was published in JAMA last year—found no significant associations between use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and children’s risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.

“The studies that are frequently pointed to as evidence of a causal relationship, including the latest systematic review released in August, include the same methodological limitations—for example, lack of a control for confounding factors or use of unreliable self-reported data—that are prevalent in the majority of studies on this topic.

“Acetaminophen is one of the few options available to pregnant patients to treat pain and fever, which can be harmful to pregnant people when left untreated. Maternal fever, headaches as an early sign of preeclampsia, and pain are all managed with the therapeutic use of acetaminophen, making acetaminophen essential to the people who need it. The conditions people use acetaminophen to treat during pregnancy are far more dangerous than any theoretical risks and can create severe morbidity and mortality for the pregnant person and the fetus.

“When considering the use of medication in pregnancy, it’s important to consider all potential risks along with any benefits. The data from numerous studies have shown that acetaminophen plays an important—and safe—role in the well-being of pregnant women.”
