Looking at the sad devastation shown on news clips.

Seems house are completely destroyed??!!

Are they made of matchsticks??

I remember seeing pictures of one of Hollywood’s big shots being built.

It did look like being built with matchsticks!!

It's bad over there. People are getting a taste of homelessness who do not own a tent or a Coleman stove.

May as well be with wood frame construction which is virtually universal. Concrete structures seem to be faring better.

I've heard the fires originated in Homeless encampments.

The 1991 event should have been a lesson.

It's past time to elect some real dullards to office that'll prioritize things like bridges, roads and levees, reservoirs and public water supply, land management and other public safety instead of DEI, illegal immigrants/ sanctuary cities, and Hamas/ Palestine.

Not a lot of good choices regarding a brush fire with 80 mile-per-hour wind behind it.
Air tankers don't fly in that kind of wind, and it would be tough to aim a drop if they did.
I idly wonder how many municipalities have a water system designed for a couple-mile-wide flame front.

Tom, I suspect we agree it's the choices that were not made decades, years, months and weeks ago that formed this and other disasters.

The fuel load has to be reduced. Cut it down, burn it off, weed whack it, graze it, put a dozer to work, whatever.

When it's a combination of Mt Vesuvius, St Helens, Kiluala, and an atom bomb heading for your front door at 100mph, municipal water supply doesn't matter. They have to reduce the fuel load before it gets to the subdivision.

Rake the forest.

And lets just not discuss the fact that LA cut the fire department's budget by 100 million, while the state spent 2.8 billion on illegals. The reservoir drained for repairs and not ready for fire season. Lets just call Trump a liar, it's all his fault anyway, and completely ignore the mismanagement by the state and local governments.

Interesting PBS program tonight discussing the Yurok tribe's tradition of burning underbrush before it gets big enough to threaten the trees when it burns.

Most pilots won't fly in a hurricane, just a few specialists in P3 Orions with a reason to do it.
Combine a fire with hurricane-strength wind and that's just not going out until it's damn good and ready.
Trump's understanding of the matter is insufficient to form an opinion, or he's pandering to an audience.

The brush in California burns because that is what brush does from time to time. The houses burn because they are there. They are there because people built them there. The winds blow there because they always have. Pack more and more people into an area, and more people will be affected. Bill

Only 0.16 inches of rainfall recorded in downtown LA from May 6 to December 31. Winds gusting to 60 mph. Humidity around 30-40%. Must be the politicians fault, certainly would not be the weather. And if you absolutely have to blame someone other than God, might start with the climate change deniers.

I have trouble envisioning Newsom as a president.
He might turn the California vote purple.

It will be interesting to see what turns out to be the proximate cause of the fire.
Our building codes require design for 90 mile-per-hour winds.
A 70 mile-per-hour gust is common in Santa Ana season.

Things like this:

quote:
California cannot deport the man who was arrested for setting fires in Los Angeles, even though he is reportedly an illegal immigrant.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identified the man as Juan Manuel Sierra-Leyva, a Mexican national who is in the United States illegally. He was tackled by Southern Californian residents as he was trying to start fires with a blowtorch last week. Arson has been a problem as criminals try to expand fires for more burglary opportunities.

Sierra-Leyva is being held on a felony probation violation but since California is a sanctuary state, ICE told Fox News that they don't expect to detain him for long. According to The New York Post, "The Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed an ordinance in November that prohibits the use of city resources and personnel to carry out federal immigration enforcement."

Then there's this.
quote:
Officials said that the Santa Ynez Reservoir had been closed since about February for repairs to its cover, leaving a 117-million-gallon water storage complex empty in the heart of the Palisades for nearly a year.
Empty for a year? Gawd. How incompetent.

There is very little rain on average in LA and it has always been that way.

A dry climate

And then this.

The wind didn't blow the structures down, but it sure helped to fan the fires. Regardless of how they started, once started it would be impossible to stop them from spreading. Sure there were glitches with water delivery at first, but supposedly that was cleared within a few hours. Not enough personnel and equipment to service everyone either. There likely would have been a lot of squealing if the utilities had cut power to their service lines.
