Can somebody remind me what exactly it is that trump thinks he is accomplishing by increasing US consumer costs via tariffs/taxes on these Mexican and Canadian imported goods?

It’s good because it raises a shitload of tax money from middle income consumers without most of them even realizing it and that in turn makes tax relief for high income individuals much easier to stomach from a debt perspective.

The investment class gets a pass on funding the government while the professional and labor class pay.

Beyond that, it is just stupid, self inflicted economic harm when we observe why Trump won. The ore working of tge economy not working for gold while the Progressive Administration was perceived as protecting minorities while people worried about the cost of living.

The talk through many of our financial institutions right now is, how to avoid doing business with the US because of the risk, We dont wish to buy or sell if possible.

At the same time there is a realisation that with US product becoming much more expensive in some markets, we are well placed to replace our us. sales with new or enlarged markets looking for more affordable alternatives from elsewhere.

And the US secretary of commerce stating that tariffs dont create inflation is getting a few laughs.

My state with Canada being a major market for bourbon (we make 90 percent of the world’s bourbon) is going to be painful to our state economy. I am taking about a loss of good paying jobs that someone can go to work without spending near decade in Congress.

The Holding Company that owns Buffalo Trace does a lot of product cross importation work w Canadian distilleries.

Canadian liquor stores are literally taking American brands off the shelves, refusing to sell even the product they already have in stock. I don’t know if it’ll be shipped back (which seems unlikely) or simply warehoused until this bullshit sorts itself out, but there will undoubtedly not be any new shipments. I read that historically Canada takes about 1/3 of U.S. whiskey production; I don’t know about wines.

Grocery stores are doing the same; remaining stocks of American products are being re-shelved to the bottom, with Canadian and other imports placed at eye level.

My wife was grocery shopping today and noticed U.S. oranges and other produce being replaced with South African, South American and Mexican goods. The Florida and California oranges were already being culled with spoilage; people were simply not buying them, and everybody was ‘reading labels’ and checking where products were made. *She just reminded me that a lot of U.S. products had 50% off stickers.*

Travel agents are reporting waves of cancellations to Las Vegas and other traditional U.S. tourist destinations, with rebookings to Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Cuba. Even locally, the ‘snow birds’ (including my brother in law) are planning to list their winter homes as soon as they get back here. I think FL is going to feel it, probably AZ as well.

It’s notable that this is Alberta, the MOST U.S. aligned jurisdiction. The rest of Canada is stronger in opposition. If Trump wants a trade war using his 10:1 economic advantage, who can blame us for defending ourselves as vigorously as we can?

He might do us a lot of damage, but I can guarantee you he’ll never own us or occupy us - the animosity that’s building here is something to behold. I really hope that this doesn’t end in bloodshed. Even as it is, getting back to being friends again isn’t going to be easy. It takes a lot to restore broken trust on this scale.

Why would he push the USMCA so hard, sign it as a long term trade agreement, then be the one to break it? This isn’t about trade, or fentanyl, or anything other than him genuinely thinking he’s going to take over Canada. He should take a long, hard look at the Russia/Ukraine conflict and see what a war with Canada would look like.
