25 percent tomorrow.
That is a lot for US customers to pay after electing a guy because they preceded things costing too much.
This President has intentionally and self inflicted the cost of living to go up.

Bill LeeperCanada needs to impose a 25% export tax on energy to help out. That's co-operation!. Bill

That’ll never happen. The quisling Danielle Smith has been bought and paid for long ago. She’s as MAGAty as they get.
Other Provinces are pulling American booze off the shelves and encouraging a ‘buy Canadian’ policy as vigorously as they can. Alberta? Nope.
The American oligarchs own her, body and soul.
The latest polls show that we’re running about 10% traitors up here; she’s pretty well at the head of the pack.

Mike MitchellCan somebody remind me what exactly it is that trump thinks he is accomplishing by increasing US consumer costs via tariffs/taxes on these Mexican and Canadian imported goods?
This is good because.......???
05 March 2025, 01:49
MJinesIt’s good because it raises a shitload of tax money from middle income consumers without most of them even realizing it and that in turn makes tax relief for high income individuals much easier to stomach from a debt perspective.

LHeym500The investment class gets a pass on funding the government while the professional and labor class pay.
Beyond that, it is just stupid, self inflicted economic harm when we observe why Trump won. The ore working of tge economy not working for gold while the Progressive Administration was perceived as protecting minorities while people worried about the cost of living.
Way to shoot yourself in the head, President Trump. The problem is we suffer from it.

M.ShyWell, I perceive it as war of attrition without dead bodies
Eventually we will get armistice, surrender or even Steven end of the conflict
Interesting times but nothing new in last 100 years
Never been lost, just confused here and there for month or two

canadians surrender on your tariffs war lol ... you might have hard to realize how nice we are but how not anymore we are ... even doug ford is cutting us contracts lol ... you have no idea what you have done ... we may be small but do not underestimate us once poked ...

wympleRegardless of who can be the last man standing, there can be no winner in this trade war. It will cost us dearly. 1/2 of this country will get no sympathy from me.

MJinesThis should tell you all you need to know about tariffs. In Trump’s first term, he imposed tariffs. When Biden came in did he discontinue the tariffs? Nope, he increased the tariffs. Why? Because Democrats love taxes. Roll the clock forward. Trump imposes new tariffs and the brain-dead MAGAts cheer. Clueless is the word that comes to mind.
[Welcome back Milan. You seem just as stupid as you were before I am afraid to say.]

shanksponyThe talk through many of our financial institutions right now is, how to avoid doing business with the US because of the risk, We dont wish to buy or sell if possible.
At the same time there is a realisation that with US product becoming much more expensive in some markets, we are well placed to replace our us. sales with new or enlarged markets looking for more affordable alternatives from elsewhere.
And the US secretary of commerce stating that tariffs dont create inflation is getting a few laughs.

LHeym500My state with Canada being a major market for bourbon (we make 90 percent of the world’s bourbon) is going to be painful to our state economy. I am taking about a loss of good paying jobs that someone can go to work without spending near decade in Congress.
The Holding Company that owns Buffalo Trace does a lot of product cross importation work w Canadian distilleries.

Canadian liquor stores are literally taking American brands off the shelves, refusing to sell even the product they already have in stock. I don’t know if it’ll be shipped back (which seems unlikely) or simply warehoused until this bullshit sorts itself out, but there will undoubtedly not be any new shipments. I read that historically Canada takes about 1/3 of U.S. whiskey production; I don’t know about wines.
https://www.facebook.com/photo...0487143765146&type=3Grocery stores are doing the same; remaining stocks of American products are being re-shelved to the bottom, with Canadian and other imports placed at eye level.
My wife was grocery shopping today and noticed U.S. oranges and other produce being replaced with South African, South American and Mexican goods. The Florida and California oranges were already being culled with spoilage; people were simply not buying them, and everybody was ‘reading labels’ and checking where products were made. *She just reminded me that a lot of U.S. products had 50% off stickers.*
Travel agents are reporting waves of cancellations to Las Vegas and other traditional U.S. tourist destinations, with rebookings to Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Cuba. Even locally, the ‘snow birds’ (including my brother in law) are planning to list their winter homes as soon as they get back here. I think FL is going to feel it, probably AZ as well.
It’s notable that this is Alberta, the MOST U.S. aligned jurisdiction. The rest of Canada is stronger in opposition. If Trump wants a trade war using his 10:1 economic advantage, who can blame us for defending ourselves as vigorously as we can?
He might do us a lot of damage, but I can guarantee you he’ll never own us or occupy us - the animosity that’s building here is something to behold. I really hope that this doesn’t end in bloodshed. Even as it is, getting back to being friends again isn’t going to be easy. It takes a lot to restore broken trust on this scale.
Why would he push the USMCA so hard, sign it as a long term trade agreement, then be the one to break it? This isn’t about trade, or fentanyl, or anything other than him genuinely thinking he’s going to take over Canada. He should take a long, hard look at the Russia/Ukraine conflict and see what a war with Canada would look like.
I think someone should ask the veterans who served in Vietnam, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan what their opinions are in regards to yet another such misadventure - not just the blue suited ‘fortunate sons’ who stay home and play with their high end horses.

TumbleweedWell, like millions of others, I too watched the American SOTU address last night, and I sure didn’t see what some here did.
What I saw was the boastful ravings of a Hitlerian megalomaniac with lustful intentions for territorial expansion - exactly like Hitler in the past, and Putin of today. “We’ll get Greenland one way or another”. Really? That’s not a blatant threat?
As far as the Democrats behaving rudely, apparently their critics have already forgotten about Marjorie Taylor Greens antics, and those of Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz. But MAGAts expect humble submission and grateful respect for the knee on their throats.
I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. From where the rest of the world stands, the once noble ‘Leader of the Free World’ has shifted abruptly and become yet another pariah and a threat to the safety and security of other peaceful nations.
I wonder if there’s a word that combines sadness, anger and bitter disappointment all combined.

LHeym500President Trump is doing an awful lot of waffling in these tariffs.
Awful lot of waffling.
Is it a trade war when you surrender at the onset. Well, at least a limited ceasefire when consumers, Main Street, Wall Street, industry, Governors, and real conservatives say what are you doing.
Awful lot of waffling.

There may be another angle. It’s a perfect way to manipulate the markets; a supreme insider trading scam. I wonder if this was what Musk was hinting at when he said “if I told you how we make all this money it could get me killed” or words to that effect.
Knowledge of Trumps announcements even a day before they’re made give a tremendous trading advantage, considering the huge bumps and valleys they cause in the Dow.
“Tariffs are on” - down goes the Dow. Buy.
“Tariffs are off”. Up goes the Dow. Sell. Rinse and repeat.
Do you honestly think Trump and his henchmen are too honest to milk that?
