So what else is new? From the Bulwark.

This Nonsense Again
—William Kristol

Yesterday, at a campaign event at his golf club in New Jersey, Donald Trump was effusively introduced by Miriam Adelson.

Trump returned the favor by effusively praising Adelson, as one does when introduced by a megadonor.

Indeed, Trump noted that he had awarded Adelson the Medal of Freedom at the White House in 2018. That’s an award that has been given since 1963 by presidents to honor a wide variety of individuals who have contributed to the “interests of the United States,” or “world peace” or other cultural or “significant public or private endeavors.”

Trump characterized it as “the highest award you can get as a civilian,” by which I guess he meant it’s the highest award given by a president to a civilian. Fine. But Trump then went on to say that “it’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor” (the Medal of Honor is sometimes mistakenly called the Congressional Medal of Honor).

More than 600 individuals have received the Medal of Freedom. Many have been worthy recipients. I was proud to attend the White House ceremony in July 2002 when my father was honored, as one of an impressive group of recipients ranging from Hank Aaron to Placido Domingo to Fred Rogers. It was a memorable day, and a moving one.

“Each of these men and women has enriched the life of America and the world,” President Bush said at that ceremony.

And so they had.

But I’m confident that none of them—none—thought their award was in any way equivalent to the Medal of Honor.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military honor the United States can bestow. It is awarded to a member of the military who has distinguished “himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”

You can read the citations for all Medal of Honor recipients, detailing their extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, here.

But Trump didn’t stop with the untenable claim that the Medal of Freedom was the equivalent of the Medal of Honor.

No, he continued, the Medal of Freedom is “actually much better” than the Medal of Honor, he said.

Why?

Because everyone [who] gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they’re soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead. She gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal, but she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

What can one say?

One can say—again—that Trump is a vulgar, thoughtless, and awful man.

One can also point out this isn’t the first time Trump has denigrated military service. In 2015, he attacked John McCain for having been a prisoner of war. Later, while serving as president, Trump called America’s war dead “suckers” and “losers.” Now he denigrates Medal of Honor recipients because some are deceased or injured.

Trump has spent the last four years emphatically denying he ever made that “suckers” and “losers” comment, despite its confirmation by his former chief of staff, retired Gen. John Kelly. Whether he’ll keep denying it now that he’s expressed much the same sentiment in front of cameras remains to be seen.

There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

The man is a disgrace.

Here's an example of a recent MOH recipient's story. And, the medal wasn't handed out at a golf club.

Sergeant First Class Christopher A. Celiz distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty while engaged with the enemy in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, on July 12th, 2018. As the leader of a special purpose unit comprised of partnered forces and members of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Sergeant First Class Celiz led an operation to clear an area of enemy forces and thereby disrupt future attacks against the government of Afghanistan and allied forces. Shortly after his team reached their final objectives, a large enemy force attacked, placed effective fire on him and his team, preventing them from maneuvering to counterattack. Realizing the danger the attack posed to his team and the operation, Sergeant First Class Celiz voluntarily exposed himself to intense enemy machine-gun and small-arms fire to retrieve and employ a heavy weapon system, thereby allowing U.S. and partnered forces to regain the initiative, maneuver to a secure location, and begin treatment of a critically wounded partnered force member. As a medical evacuation helicopter arrived, it was immediately engaged by accurate and sustained enemy fire. Knowing how critical it was to quickly load the casualty, Sergeant First Class Celiz willingly exposed himself to heavy enemyfire to direct and lead the evacuation. As the casualty moved from a position of cover and out into intense enemy fire, Sergeant First Class Celiz made a conscious effort to ensure his body acted as a physical shield to his team carrying the casualty and the crew of the aircraft. As the casualty was loaded and Sergeant First Class Celiz’s team returned to cover, he alone remained at the aircraft, returning a high volume of fire and constantly repositioning himself to act as a physical shield to the aircraft and its crew. With his final reposition, Sergeant First Class Celiz placed himself directly between the cockpit and the enemy, ensuring the aircraft was able to depart. As the helicopter lifted off, Sergeant First Class Celiz was hit by enemy fire. Fully aware of his own injury but understanding the peril to the aircraft from the intense enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant First Class Celiz motioned to the aircraft to depart rather than remain behind to load him. His selfless actions saved the life of the evacuated partnered force member and almost certainly prevented further casualties among other members of his team and the aircrew. Throughout the entire engagement, Sergeant First Class Celiz significantly changed the course of battle by repeatedly placing himself in extreme danger to protect his team, defeat the enemy, and it ultimately cost him his life. Sergeant First Class Celiz’s extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Here's the actual quote from the numbnut. It's better because "everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor." How much more stupid can you get? Absolutely disgraceful.

Hop in here Lane and tell all of us about how you'll walk across crushed glass to vote for this despicable dishonorable piece of shit. You brought up John McCain in another thread. I wonder what McCain would think about this sort of statement. Or your idol Ronald Reagan?

The idea that anybody could vote for this human shit-heap is incomprehensible to me.

“It’s actually much better because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump said. “They’re soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead. [Adelson] gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman. They’re rated equal, but she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom and she got it through committees and everything else.”

Where are all the people who were telling us Trump would say such things.

Donald Trump said at an event that a civilian award was "much better," given that Medal of Honor recipients are often injured or killed.

Those poor sucker Medal of Honor recipients.

Trump is too stupid to even call the Medal of Honor by the right name.

Have you seen the actual tape, all of it? Trump said (quite inarticulately, as usual) that The Presidential Medal of Freedom was better to be awarded than receiving the Medal of Honor. Why? Because you usually die, or are terribly wounded in the action for which the CMH is given. He wasn’t saying that the CMH was a lesser honor at all, but that (for the receiptent, anyway) the PMF does not come with death or a lifetime of disability.

There are only two people in the world who can F’up a reasonably logical conclusion and statement more than Trump and they are Joe Biden and Kamala Harris..

I used to have a regular (yearly) and pretty involved relationship with the Medal of Honor Society. At my choice, being a Marine, most of the fellows I was privileged to meet and spend time with were WWII Marines. I don’t think a one of them would have been much more than bemused at Trumps stupid statement re: the PMF recipient being “better” for not being liable to death or disfiguring wounds.

Trump has not a clue about being in combat. He’s never be near it… until, anyway, being shot at the fairgrounds (where he was a truly brave dude). Harris certainly hasn’t, nor Walz. I don’t know the particulars about Vance but I know what being in a combat zone is like. That said, Trump should have know better to conflate a combat award with one that doesn’t require getting shot at. Not his best day.

Not one of us have awarded the PMF. If the right folks are the recipients, the PMF should be second in honor, perhaps?
I think our presidents have awarded it 55 times. I would hope all POTUS have truly so acted because of great and worthy contributions (with selfless sacrifice) to our country and not just given an undeserved award to a political crony… but, money talks and bullshit walks as my old client was claimed to have said during Arabscam.

Well, he didn't have to make the comparison at all, in the first place. It reflects a very poor level of self-awareness, at best.

But he let the cat out of the bag by doing so because of some sort of almost equivalence, or false equivalence, and disclosed his lame understandings of it.

"GOP megadonor Miriam Adelson plans to do whatever it takes to help Trump win with $100 million PAC"

We certainly understand.

Trump should have known the difference in the two medals. https://trumpwhitehouse.archiv...nor/?utm_source=link

And if he had told the truth the PMF wasn't about freedom at all. It was all about her being a maga-donor.

I gather from this thread nothing more or less than Trump is either very stupid, very corrupt or has that speech impediment that makes him holler gibberish.

Sure, possibly any combination of.

Come on fella. There’s not a single lie in what I’ve written. Perhaps you do not share the importance and understand the duty of taking personal responsibility for your own acts. Biden doesn’t either so maybe you’re in good company. What I said was that Biden allowed the impeachment to go forth instead of telling the truth about his relationship with his son and the extortion money that his family had received for influence peddling, etc. He certainly did not tell the truth as to what he had done in his campaign against Trump. I’m absolutely not saying that Trump is perfect, I’m just saying that Biden, if he had told the truth and he had put America first before himself and his family, that the first impeachment would not have gone forth. It would be impossible for the Democrat house to say we should impeach Trump if Biden had exposed his part in the “quid pro quo “ debacle and Hillary’s Russia hoax.

By the way, I suggest you do not call this old man, a liar to his face. Someone may take umbrage to that. As for now, I’ll just assume that you are drinking this Saturday afternoon and I give anyone a pass when they do some dumb shit and say something that “does NOT need to be said” occasionally after a pop or two. I know I used to like my red whiskey.
You are a hoot, though. Hoffer must have written with you in mind. Lighten up.

How is it that Biden could have "allowed" or not allowed the first impeachment?

I thought that was the role of a different branch?

The Republicans in the Senate violated their Constitutional oaths by voting against the second impeachment. Seditionists do not belong in office.

The Constitution envisions a Senate that does its duty and roots them out of government, at least.

The only “merit” in not impeaching Trump the second time by that I mean convicting on the Senate, was Sen. McConnell thought he could pass the buck to the Courts. Sen. McConnell also thought that Jan 6 and the election lie was enough to insure Trump had destroyed Trump’s hold on the GOP.

Sen. McConnell was wrong on both counts. The effect was to push Sen. McConnell from center stage of the national Party. Trump beat Sen. McConnell, and Sen. McConnell let it happen by not leading from the front against Trump.

Unfortunately for the nation, the second impeachment was more of a Soviet-style show trial with no real ability for the Republicans to participate. I think destroying any records of evidence contrary to the predetermined result, not allowing the Republicans leadership to appoint members, etc. caused nothing but disappointment and distrust when an adversarial hearing in both committee and the whole would have most probably resulted in Articles going to the Senate with much greater credibility. In other words, the Democrats were their worst enemy in seeking impeachment of Trump as a partisan action.
As an aside, if Trump is elected, the refusal of the Senate to even consider the articles of impeachment of Secretary Majorcas makes many people believe that there is a cover-up on the part of Democrats. That also makes them their own enemy. It will cause lost votes for the Border Czar.

So, do I think the second impeachment was much more serious than the first? Yes, of course I do, but the form of creating and trying the allegations made it impossible to know exactly what happened. The denial of being able to cross examine witnesses or even call witnesses before the committee leaves me cold. This nation deserves a full and fair hearing before an impeachment is sent to the Senate and it deserves a full-blown trial there. That did not happen and even though there are great (maybe true?) arguments that Trump should have been impeached and convicted/removed, the way that the Democrats went about it created more distrust than confidence in the proceeding.

If Trump is ever tried on his current Federal indictments, hopefully, all the rules of evidence will be complied with, and whatever happens, this country can then look more favorably upon whatever the verdict may be. Personally, before I say that Trump shouldn’t have been removed from Office, I’ll wait to see what a fair judicial trial produces.

Was detrimental to a full and fair recess.QUOTE]Originally posted by LHeym500:

If it had been more of a Soviet style trial, Trump would have been arrested and condemned.

He was not.

It was the most meritorious impeachment proceeding.

You’re lying again for pure political reasons which is very Soviet of you.

It was IINO Impeachment In Name Only. Nofa King way the Senate was going to convict. One wonders in retrospect that if they had a do over that the Senators might have grown a pair and convicted.

It was closer than that Sen. McConnell with his OAC behind him and Senate fundraising control seriously thought about publicly supporting GOP Senators for impeachment.
He did not. He tried to pass the off the tough choice. We have seen how that worked.

The “system” worked to Trump’s advantage. Yet, we have a former judge comparing a due process as prescribed by the Constitution to a Soviet, Russia trial.

Defies any sense of reason such statements.

The judge is peddling bullshit again. Nothing prevented the Senate from holding a trial, calling witnesses, hearing evidence... Nothing but the Republican majority, that is.

The process in the House was merely the indictment. The trial was supposed to take place in the Senate.
