Walsh is irrelevant. You cling too his name because you found something in his interpretation that fits your view. Ignoring all the other people who dont share that particular sentiment who find something worthwhile in the song. No 3 on spotify right now.
It does not need to change anything. On one hand you rail at the thought it could be used for change that scares you, By someone like walsh and then ask that question in a dismissive manor.

Heres a question for you. Is siting on the dock of the bay any lesser song because it is about a someway similar form of feeling helpless or depressed in your situation.

quote:
I left my home in Georgia
And I headed for the Frisco Bay
'Cause I've got nothin' to live for
Looks like nothin's gonna come my way, so

quote:
Looks like nothin's gonna change
Everything seems to stay the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same

I'm talking about the context of today.

It's a good song. That we can agree on.

Everyone latches certain personal meanings to it.

SOME of those meanings has led us to this:

https://youtu.be/yHQrOK6AXqk

https://thehill.com/homenews/h...in-trump-jan-6-case/

So, please explain to me what meanings that folks are attaching OTHER than a continuation of MAGA?

Redding's song is about himself in the world. He doesn't blame anyone.

Oliver's song is about a worldview - of a group.

Redding's song doesn't engage projection. Oliver's song has some psychological projection.

One section is about a 5'3" 300 lb welfare recipient -stereotyped - not only for him to relate to. but others, always, already, listening.

Redding doesn't suggest the system is broken and the "man" is to blame. Oliver does.

Redding doesn't make like he's a victim of anything but circumstance, and he can fix that. Oliver suggests he and others are victims of some abstract "man" up North.

Redding's song is about his despair, with a solution.

Oliver's song is about anger and blame as a group -- period end of story.

Redding doesn't evoke conservative nostalgia. Oliver does. (old soul)

Redding doesn't evoke God or the Lord. Oliver does.

Redding doesn't evoke conspiracy theory. Oliver does.

The only emotion Redding evokes is perhaps empathy. Oliver evokes a lot more emotionalism, such as indignation.

Oliver Anthony, "Rich Men of Richmond" Lyrics:
I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day / Overtime hours for bullshit pay / So I can sit out here and waste my life away / Drag back home and drown my troubles away.

Pre-Chorus:
It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to / For people like me and people like you / Wish I could just wake up and it not be true / But it is, oh, it is.

Chorus:
Livin' in the new world / With an old soul / These rich men north of Richmond / Lord knows they all just wanna have total control / Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do / And they don't think you know, but I know that you do / 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end / 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond.

I wish politicians would look out for miners / And not just minors on an island somewhere / Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't got nothin' to eat / And the obese milkin' welfare.

Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds / Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds / Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground / 'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down.

Repeat Pre-Chorus

Repeat Chorus

I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day / Overtime hours for bullshit pay.

Always always always you miss the point and concentrate on your fears and fixations.
The similarity of the two regardless of lyrics is that regardless of colour or culture, people value both songs because exactly they can empathise with them, have been there at some point and know or have had the same thoughts.

Otis's speaks from the bedrock bottom.

Olivers speaks from continually trying and not getting anywhere.

There is a whole genre of songs of different styles that have captured peoples emotions of helplessness and have become exceedingly popular because people can relate.

quote:
You've got a fast car, is it fast enough so you can drive away, we've got to make a deal, leave tonight or live and die this way.

quote:
And the people bowed and prayed / To the neon god they made / And the sign flashed out its warning / In the words that it was forming / And the sign said, “The words of the prophets / Are written on the subway walls / And tenement halls / And whispered in the sounds of silence.”

I do beleive that is another way of saying 'Fake news."

And you should maybe look a little closer at Reddings lyrics.

I heard some little kids singing yesterday.
They were singing twinkle, twinkle, little star.
I could tell by the fevered pitch to their voice, and a look in their eyes, that it was about Trump.
He is so high above everyone else as to be a wonder. He is the unreachable diamond everyone wants to touch. Purely a song for the MAGA crowd.
I instinctively know it is, despite what anyone says. Big Grin

Well, at least he didn't say "fight like hell, or you won't have a country anymore".

He said something close to the opposite.

And the thing is that whatever side one is on, we can all sense a decline in the values once held in common, on behalf of the country.

I can't view MSn, so can only go off the headings.

I like John stewart. Doesn't mean I totally agree with him, but his interview reminded me of something id recently read that ill post. Its from NZ and the commentator without being a comedian, is speaking from the position of being an ardent vocal and well known supporter of the left. I think its interesting to see where he agrees and disagrees with Stewart. and note much of the blame for the state that sees it likely that the right will be in government soon, he lays on the left itself.

https://thedailyblog.co.nz/202...niversal-class-left/
His claims also bear striking resemblance too Anthony's song.

The Right loves to lay it on the Left.

So, relating to the short video posted above and again here: https://youtube.com/shorts/i8PkAmYUPpg?feature=share

The lament of Oliver is working for too little pay and getting nowhere.

No doubt - globalization has taken jobs and good pay from Americans. But IMO, that's the effect, not the cause.

I don't see any logic in laying blame for globalization's effect on the Left.

And I certainly don't see the Right fixing it with rabid nationalism.

It's a vicious circle of blame that actually makes things worse.

The world has changed.

Here's an interesting short article about globalization:

https://education.nationalgeog...ource/globalization/

Globalization is a term used to describe the increasing connectedness and interdependence of world cultures and economies.

I think you miss the point. This is not the right, this is elements of the left being critical of the lefts messaging/actions which is turning away the very people who should support them.
I also for that reason cheer when someone like Cheney is critical of the right for the correct reasons.

Im not arguing with you on the right or wrongs of it, Im just saying the themes the song discusses are being brought up in maybe more pertinent circles and I like the fact that some on the left are asking themselves why.

I agree about globalisation. Its an interesting situation, in the long term bringing up the wealth and life styles of poorer nations means in the future trade will hopefully become more reciprocal and wage cost etc will even out.
Just like much of the woke crusade, rabid nationalism as you call it is a distraction.

Anti-woke is also a distraction.

Nationalism as a remedy to globalization is not a distraction, IMO. It's the solution some think will solve a problem. It's not.

Anyway, thanks for exchanging views.

We have gone beyond his intentions, since there's agreement on that. We know he is honest, and his intentions are good and respectable and respectful.

It's the viral reaction, and underlying stuff that is in discussion now.

That's my opinion, of course.
