Don’t you think Bill, that sometimes opposition is a good thing? Put things in perspective and keeps politicians and military brass on guard so they don’t think, everything is just given? Nothing like standing over your own kill

Well, the damage he did to our military to advance a right-wing minority cause certainly created many smiles in Moscow, Beijing and Pyongyang. Im having a hard time seeing what damage was done. I'm not saying I agree with his theatrics, but how is the military damaged? Personally, I'd like to see more legislators and legislatures flex their muscles. I think the executive needs a little whittling at from time to time.

Because our career officers were just shown that their careers and the lives of their families can become a political football for any washed-up college coach who becomes a Senator. You are not wrong, they have, but they don't usually interfere with the orderly process of promotions and Command appointments en mass, it took this doofus to introduce that. It's not just the servicemember, their families are impacted by this bullshit, wives had arranged jobs they had to decline, children were pre-enrolled in schools. And it was all watched closely by officers not affected by this particular buffoonery; makes outside offers much more attractive for officers it took decades to develop. I ask these 4 questions: 1) Is Senator Tuberville duly elected by and to represent the people of Alabama? 2) Did he convey their will? 3) Did he act within and accordance to current Senate rules and laws of the land? 4) Will the people of Alabama have the opportunity to vote him out? If the answer to all of them is yes…it sounds like the people calling him names simply dislike the founding principles of our republic and are more “commie” like than he. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. You really think the promotion and command mast system of the US military ought to be subject to the political whims of the culture warriors like tuberville? Not wise. How about if a Dem senator decides to hold up all promotions unless trump is taken off the ballot in the upcoming election? Or maybe holding up promotions until offshore drilling is banned? It's a slippery slope. -Every damn thing is your own fault if you are any good.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news...Q1R?ocid=socialshare Tommy Tuberville routed in a 0-436 loss after the senator failed to prevent a single military promotion Story by mhall@businessinsider.com (Madison Hall) • 21h With the Senate confirming the promotions of the final 11 remaining military officers on Tuesday night, it's now official: Storied former Auburn football coach and Sen. Tommy Tuberville went 0-436 in his bid to prevent defense officials from getting promoted to try and get the US military to adjust its abortion policies. The vast majority of promotions — 425 — occurred on December 5 after Tuberville finally relented on his block, though he still ensured that 11 four-star officers' promotions remained in jeopardy until Tuesday when he ultimately acquiesced to the demands from Democrats and an increasing number of members from his own party. Despite Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and a slew of other Senate Republicans protesting against Tuberville's hold, it was only the Democrats in the Senate Rules Committee who voted to advance a resolution in November that would've circumvented the block. When lifting the bulk of the withheld promotions earlier in December, Tuberville admitted to reporters that the hold was all for naught: the Department of Defense did not change a single rule or policy as a result of his actions. ************* Real conservatives aren't radicalized. Under the Law that is for State officials to decide, and the Republicans who run Alabama are content to have a Florida resident occupying their Senate seat. Elections to Federal office are handled by the States, and Alabama has the peculiar residency requirement of ONE DAY to qualify, like Colorado has the requirement of not participating in an insurrection. So your real objection is WHICH political dufus gets to do this? Aren’t officer promotions the choice of the President? You don’t think that Biden chose the folks he did for his own political reasons? There is a reason that these are made by the president and require the advice and consent of the senate. I’m not disagreeing it has become a political football. But I do think that the higher general officer ranks promotions are more political than pure warfighting skill.

You and I both would like to see executives like Trump have less authority, not more. The executive is simply one of one, it's him, he's it, the one and only authority. At least Tuberville is one of 100. The Executive branch is too big, too powerful, the Checks and Balances aren't stringent enough.

If a Senator has legitimate concerns about an officer requiring confirmation it is certainly not only their right but their duty to raise them. That was not the case here, this was abuse of the Senate privileges and should lead to a review and revision of those privileges. "If you’re innocent why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”- Donald Trump

The Senate role of advise and consent is not a privilege for better or worse for generals. It is an obligation required by the Constitution. The S. Ct., has applied that obligation as requiring confirmation by the Senate. Yes, the Football Coach from Alabama has so abused it.

A great deal of Senate business is conducted by "unanimous consent" whereby if no Senator has a substantive objection to the particular business at hand it is concluded. Non-controversial promotions of military leaders are exactly the type of business traditionally handled that way. Tuberville objected en mass and held them up for most of a year. If I were in Chuck Shumer's seat I would be trying to revise the procedure to require objections from a few Senators, but then again this would have ended in August when I kept the Senate in session instead of taking a month-long recess; denying Republican Senators that month of schmoozing with donors would have "encouraged" them to pressure Tuberville. I'm interested in issue 2) and Mike's post above. The linked poll does show that a majority of AL voters do not agree with Tuberville's position and worry it threatened national security. Maybe that's why the football coach caved.
