I was going to say "sad" but I guess it probably wasn't. His quality of life was probably poor and maybe a good time to go hold hands with Jesus. Certainly our loss for people like him to leave this earth.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news...51b8c70cfdec06&ei=28 The words of former US President Jimmy Carter Story by Reuters • 2h • 2 min read 2024 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died at age 100. Here are some of his quotes: * "I can't deny I'm a better ex-president than I was a president." - 2005 interview with reporters * "The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation". * "The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America". - a 1979 televised address on what was wrong with America; it became known as Carter's "malaise speech" * "America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense, it is the other way round. Human rights invented America." - Carter's Jan. 14, 1981, presidential farewell address * "I've looked on many women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times. God knows I will do this and forgives me." - a 1976 interview with Playboy magazine * "A simple and a proper function of government is just to make it easy for us to do good and difficult for us to do wrong." - Carter's speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976 * "War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children." - Carter's 2002 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech * "I think that under Trump the government is worse than it has been before. This is the first time I remember when the truth is ignored, allies are deliberately aggravated, China, Europe, Mexico and Canada are hurt economically and have to hurt us in response, Americans see the future worse than the present, and immigrants are treated cruelly." - Carter in a 2018 interview with Salon (Compiled by Bill Trott and Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by Diane Craft) ================================== https://www.msn.com/en-us/vide...cid=socialshare&t=33 Former United States President Jimmy Carter, Nobel Peace Prize winner, has died at the age of 100. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news...iKM?ocid=socialshare Jimmy Carter, Longest-Living U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize-Winning Humanitarian, Dies at 100 Jimmy Carter, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning 39th president of the United States who transformed his legacy from one-term commander-in-chief to beloved humanitarian, died on Sunday, Dec. 29 at the record-breaking age of 100. ************* Degenerate 1:1 1 Then Trump said, "Let Us re-make a Nation in MY Image, after My likeness, to rule over everything in the Nation, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it". He was a good man with good intentions and I am sure God welcomed him warmly into heaven. That said, he made some mistakes that changed the world forever. A good example was failing to support Rhodesia. The continent of Africa would be far better off today had he not let Rhodesia fail. Nobody can make an informed argument that the former statement is false. He did try with his Foundation to try to get Zimbabwe to follow democratic principles but failed again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. I'm not "informed" enough on the circumstances and scenario of the time to argue much on those two points. But right away I see typical conflation of two premises that may not connect. While it may be true that Africa would be a better place today if Rhodesia had not failed, tagging Jimmy with the fault of such failure doesn't seem right. ************* Degenerate 1:1 1 Then Trump said, "Let Us re-make a Nation in MY Image, after My likeness, to rule over everything in the Nation, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it". "Mr. Carter went to Washington with an outsider’s promise to “drain the swamp” and make America great again four decades before Mr. Trump expressed those same aims. But the two could hardly have come from more different origins. Unlike the thrice-married New York playboy mogul with the flashy golf resorts and the private airliner, Mr. Carter grew up on a peanut farm with no electricity or running water. He was a frugal born-again Christian who taught Sunday school and was married to the same woman for more than three-quarters of a century." https://www.nytimes.com/2024/1...mmy-carter-dead.html

President Carter spent a lot of time on St. Simons Island at Musgrove Plantation (as a guest of R.J. Reynolds heirs) and on Sea Island, Georgia’s with his cousin Don (who was executive editor of Knight Ridder newspapers). Don and his wife, Caroline (a journalist of merit, herself, China with Kissinger) had no children and kinda got adopted into our family for the 4th, Christmas and Thanksgiving stuff. Somehow, that morphed into becoming friends with Jimmy and Rosalyn. Georgia, being a small state back in the 70s, dad already knew several people that Carter would name to positions of importance like the Attorney General and Carter’s legislation liaison, and later chief of staff (or whatever he called it after Hamm Jordan). I soaked up the conversations every chance I had. My mother was a big supporter of Jimmy Carter and became a close friend with him, more than with his wife, cordial, but not close for some reason. She loved his Sunday school lessons. Dad was not so much a political supporter at all, but he certainly respected the President and ex-president as a good man. I just thought it was cool to sit at the same picnic table on the Fourth of July as the president of the United States. I think my sister’s children have a Murano glass rose that the host of one of Rosalyn’s birthday parties put on each lady’s plate. You can tell a lot about a man by his consistency. People can say that they have faith, but are they practicing Jesus’ teachings when no one is watching. Jimmy‘s devotion to Habitat for Humanity , his 60 years or so of teaching Sunday school and the loyalty that he had to family and friends are fruits by which you can know him. And, like me, his mom was just amazing. The world is today a lesser place. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

He was a thoroughly decent man. Unfortunately, like sausage making, there are things in politics that don’t work well by being a thoroughly moral and good person. President Carter may have had his flaws as a person, but he’s certainly a better man than I, at least in my estimation. We are lesser by his passing. However, I suspect Scott is right, he probably was ready to go quite some time ago. His general medical condition was deteriorating, and coupled with the loss of his wife, I doubt he was having much pleasure these last several months. I too think he will be greeted at heaven’s gate with a “Well come, my beloved servant!”

This argument has been had. This is not the pls e to reargue it w you. You have simply re-demonstrated your like of class. I’ll take President Carter as a human being and President over Trump any day. You think folks do not care about stopping Russia in Ukraine over domestic US interest. The same logic applies to Rhodesia in the 70s. Smith’s government made its own bed it seeking to maintain ethic minority political power. The last compromise sought a guarantee of white seats in legislative body. You would not accept that if you were a majority white body politic and an ethic minority demanded guaranteed seats. Good riddance to Smith’s government. That does not absolve Mugabe. It recognizes Smith and decades of white domination created Mugabe. Go look at the picture id Smith you posted. There are no black Africans in the picture.

Carter was very much a proponent of democratic rule. He was also a very moral man and had the weakness of not believing that people would vote for a bad actor. Mugabe was probably one of the worst options for black Rhodesians (at the time)/Zimbabweans, but he did have a pretty substantial number of people voting for him. The Zimbabwe constitution on its face was quite equitable and Carter would see that and continue to support Zimbabwe despite the fact that Mugabe refused to follow it. Historic what ifs are great entertainment, but I really doubt that Smith’s government would have prevented what became of Rhodesia, it just would have slowed the progression. Look at South Africa. The land of Mandela is giving Zimbabwe a run for poor elective choices… and we in the US have nothing to brag of in that department, either.

Let’s assume that’s true. President Carter was right and within his right as a private citizen with a platform to advocate against the idea our intervention in the ME came to be. Desert Storm worked out, but it did was set the stage for Iran to gain more influence/power and our disastrous return to Iraq. The man may have been wrong, but it was not treason.
