Steve, I dont have answers either. I just dont like I needed to lay off a good hand, as I couldnt justify keeping him with inflation costs.
He picks up work here and there, he will be cutting christmas trees in a week, nothing long term. Equipment dealers take a hit and lay off people during these times, when we just repair instead of buy new. So on and so on, many people feeling it.
I am a work a holic, so 7 days a week is normal. Multi facet income from the land, and a couple rentals I built years ago, means I will be fine.
Some farms sell building lots when times get tough, but means they have less land to get a return from.
Organic is the first thing dropped when food price increases. a $5 tomato, or $20 for a free range chicken that looks like a plucked roadrunner isnt justified.
It spreads beyond only a few that feel the economy is not working for them. That is why when people say the economy is great, people are lying if they say it's not. I dont think those people see what I see daily.
I hope some can do as you did Steve, and focus on a skillset that makes them money. I dont know about the rest, or the millions that are here washing dishes or hoping too.
As for niki... why do I want advice from a failed business man in another country?

Also, fun fact, , this is an internet forum, which is privately owned. It has international members. This distinction, in the country country of jurisdiction and registration, as important as dc vs ac is to an electrician

Literally TWO persons, in the world, have "rights" on this forum - Don and Saeed - as they own the site and management therein. Members have privileges, There is a world of difference between "right" and "privilege",

A more proper way of stating your ?thought? would be that you "CURRENTLY have the privilege to post in this PRIVATELY OWNED internet forum, subject to TOS for members" - there is no specification for contents of posts, except that which is prohibited in the TOS.

As i am well aware that little naki can't be tasked to actually look it up, here's the TOS

Steve said the blue collar workers are the ones who are and will struggle. If we add millions of unskilled workers, and they are the ones the economy is not working for...... then what? You are 100% correct that the current economy does not work for everyone. In my opinion, this is directly related to offshoring manufacturing and globalization. We do not currently have enough jobs that pay a living wage for our unskilled/low skilled workers. Then what is a good question, I sure don't have the answer but I did see the writing on the wall and developed marketable skills myself.
You just cannot say the economy is doing great for everyone.
I know how to budget, in a business just as Shanks knows. Not everyone who doesnt run a business knows how, they are the ones who will suffer. Sometimes it means laying off or getting rid of full or part time help to make it through.

Skills are a relative matter. Ruffino was here the other day, trimmed a palm tree for $100.
I did not plant the damn tree, the birds brought it and I didn't know to cut it before it got that big.
It was worth $100 not to climb it, and it's not yet worth $600 to get it cut and removed. So it goes.

Ruffino doesn't do calculus, but he knows when business is thin and doesn't bring a helper (I carry the palm fronds to his dump trailer).

He is not competing with Chinese land and labor costs. He lives here, buys $4+ gasoline like everybody else and pays his taxes.

Salud, Ruffino...

TB40,
Sounds like you had a good employee and it was difficult letting him go, sorry to hear that, for both of you.

Your post brought a few things to mind, how hard work and motivation can make all the difference in this world as well as how we are not all made of the same stuff. Your comment on the millions washing dishes reminded me of one of my old employees, I just ran into him for the first time in about 15 years. The guy was in his early 20's when he worked for me and not motivated enough to catch the public bus(about a 30 minute commute) and make it to the shop everyday. When he quit he ended going back to the job he had as a teenager, working as a cashier in a gas station. You guessed it, 15 years later and still a cashier at the gas station and most likely still living with his mother. He graduated from TSJC gunsmithing school but lacked the motivation to do anything with his life.

You and I would never find a situation like that acceptable.

Motivation has to come from inside. Some can never find it, and usually, it's always someone else's fault why they cant. Roll Eyes
I would not want to start over, that is for sure. But tireless work got me through. When log prices were down, I had some sawn into lumber. I had bought sites at bank or tax sales when the price was right. I spent two years each, building rental houses in what ever nights or time I could scratch out. I can do everything, from electrical, plumbing to all the doors and cabinets. I have a full cabinet shop along with various hardwood cut here on my property and find building relaxing. My rent is lower than others. But good tenants means little work, and an income that always makes up some slack in poorer times.
A little vision, and a lot of hard work can get you ahead.

The thing about comparing administrations is, some important policy decisions have a time lag of about two years before effects are evident. There is considerable overlap and interaction in between.

I am copying this from another thread I posted. All the sources are there and though some of the info is a few years old (from my Imagur library) they can be easily updated from the sources.

I still cannot understand how almost of 50% of Americans can believe the right wing BS.

This ones needs to be uipdated significantly

Proof that Republican administrations are controlled by top 0.1%

Democrats need to rebuild the middle class to what it was 50 years ago.

This is why everyone needs to pay the same rate of tax on ALL income, including unrealised capital that is used for leverage (since that becomes realised capital)

This chart is really a reflection of the White supremacy that is dominating Red states. Texas is a BIG worry.

Why does the US need to spend so much on the military? Why is the arms industry getting bigger by escalating global conflict?

My biological family had it much better off during Dems (minus President Johnson). It was the GOP that broke them financially w removal of tobacco tariffs.

More evidence that the Republican leadership is conning the people. They do not want a good economy as the super rich make less money and more slowly during a good economy.

Average 6.367% or roughly triple the rate of the prior admin. Rather telling that you didn't include all 4 years.

Opps, still raising

Since you are trying to debate on facts and not abuse, I will respond.

Please go back to ALL the charts for the last 50 years.

Democratic admin = 40 million jobs
GOP admin = 1 million jobs

FACT

Again look at macro trends of wealth distribution. Every time there is an economic down turn, the Super rich get richer. This coincides with Republican regimes.

These are FACTS. Not opinion. They are US government stats and data.

Go back to the beginning and please read it rather and try to find fault with it. This is not MY data. I just found it by researching the subject.
