According Russian regime media “RIA” the FSB has opened a “criminal case against Prigozhin for calling an armed rebellion”.

Peskov also announces that Putin “has been informed”.

There is no coming back from this. Somebody is going to lose his head.

Wagner Leader Declares War on Russian Military After Alleged Attack
Story by Jon Jackson • 4h ago

"We are 25,000 strong, and we are going to figure out why chaos is happening in Russia," Prigozhin announced in a message shared on Telegram. "Everyone else is free to join us." Yevgeny Prigozhin

According to Prigozhin, the tensions resulted in his troops being attacked on Friday by Russia's formal military forces.

After the alleged attack, Prigozhin said he's "declaring war on the Russian Ministry of Defense."

"PMC Wagner Commanders' Council made a decision: The evil brought by the military leadership of the country must be stopped," he said, according to a translation from the WarTranslated project. "Those who destroyed today our guys, who destroyed tens, tens of thousands of lives of Russian soldiers will be punished."

I think Prigozhin has quite a bit of pull among the Russian soldiers, especially the young one whom have been enlisted to replace the dead veterans.
This has to be a major blow to Putin and further reveals the inept manner in which the war has been waged so far.

Well, this is scary stuff because we can't predict shit about what will become of this.

The likelihood of an outcome that we will find favorable, overall, is a crap game.

Given the carnage so far, why is there reason for optimism?

This guy Prigozhin is just as much a monster as Putin.

And beside that, does anyone really think the general population of Russia (or N. Korea) is capable of directing the politics or governance towards anything less fucked up than they have known for a very long time?

He is a monster, that is for sure, but he was a monster for hire.
The job he agreed to had certain caveats, guarantees if you will, that the Russians who hired him would support him and the men he has in his employ.
Russia has clearly not lived up to their end of the deal so maybe he is having a change of heart (if he has one…)

I don’t think Prigozhin is as much of a Russian nationalist as Putin thought. If he was, would Putin need to pay Wagner or the Belarusians to fight for Mother Russia? They would do it out of devotion or nationalist pride without compensation if they were.
The fact that Russia even had to employ mercenaries in the war against Ukraine is telling.

Yeah im not hoping for a national meltdown. Im just hoping that the two entities reduce each other and make Ukraines job of regaining its territory easier.
I have seen it opined that This could well be Putins method for laying blame on his failure in Ukraine On Shoigu/Prigozin thereby focusing the countries ire on them and allowing himself to retain power should Ukraine regain its territories.
Thats not a terrible option.

Chechen Warlord Declares Putin Loyalty, but PM and Moscow Mayor Silent
Story by Brendan Cole • 58m ago

(excerpt)

However, two Russian commentators speculated on Saturday about why Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin had not yet backed Putin.

Konstantin Sonin, a Russian-born political economist at the University of Chicago, tweeted that even after several hours "the total disappearance of prime-minister Mishustin, the Moscow mayor Sobyanin, and other Putin's underlings is a bad sign for Putin."

"They fear him, but they wish him out," he added.

Russian journalist and political scientist Yevgenia Albats tweeted "there is a split at the very top as to how to resolve the Prigozhin crisis. Putin is saying all tough words, but he prefers no action. Those who do want action, the (Security Council chief Nikolai) Patrushev type, are incapable (of) making a decision."

"Those who may become actors or even benefactors like Mishustin & Sobyanin sit on fences, waiting to see who will win," she added, "it is a state of profound uncertainty."

Belarusian news outlet Nexta has reported that Mishustin's plane "has left for St. Petersburg. Several other business jets are also on their way to Russia's northern capital. In addition, the richest member of the government, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, has already left the country."

I not the least bit mad nor sad.
I do worry on WWI something similar happened w a general turning his army around during the Lenin uprising. No one knows if he was marching to side the Leninist or relieve the Government. However, it created enough uncertainty and fear that the Bolsheviks secured power.

I think China will sit by and let this play out. In fact, I'd think that Xi is attempting to keep Putin calm during this as not to be an example for the next social uprising in China or it's own territory.
It's not as though the entire world hasn't witnessed the incapacity of Putin and Russia on display the last couple of years.

The more pressing and important question, in my mind, is - what if Prigozhin succeeds in ousting the top military officers?
Not sure his aim is to oust Putin and if Putin comes to terms with Prigozhin, and gives him official power to wage the war as he wants, then Ukraine is in an even worse predicament than ever before.
If he is allowed and equipped to run the military as he wants, it's almost certain that Ukraine will be defeated...
