According to the BBC, Lukashenko brokered a deal where Prigozhin stopped his advance, charges against him were dropped and he has asylum in Belorus. I doubt his life expectancy is very long. Putin the genius doesn’t forget or forget…

I broadly share your sentiment, but:
A) don't we think anyone and everyone can threaten Russia these days? What hostility can Russia offense or defense outside of their nukes which are a hazard whether they work as intended or not?

B) I'd guess American and some European "Blackwater" type organizations tower over the top of Wagner. Id certainly think China has a reserve and in plainclothes armed force that equals their uniformed service members.

I've had that feeling since Friday night. My first thought was a plausible reason to get the Russian troops out of there and draw Ukrainian troops in for a handful of tac nukes. I'm no strategist, but something feels wrong about this.

I saw an article, but didn't read more than the headlines, which claimed that Putin had Prigozhin’s relatives kidnaped and held hostage, and that is the reason he went to Belarus.

When the Iranians took American hostages in 1979 Teheran, there was a similar incident at the Russian embassy. Shortly thereafter they stopped bothering the Russians. The story was, there was a significant threat to the family of one of the student organizers, punctuated with a small box he received in the mail, and he lost his enthusiasm for the cause.

The story somehow didn't make it into our newspapers, maybe because it was apocryphal and unverifiable, maybe not...

I think the simple answer is the best. Prigozhin already felt he was doomed. Shoigu, Gerazmov and Putin had turned against him and were trying to take his army. Given the history of those Silvaki that fall out of favour he probably felt he had to do something major while he could.
He attempted a coup hoping to get support from the army, but it never really came and so at the point he gave up it was a decision between a suicide attack on moscow or trying to live another day.
In the end all these guys are cowards who fear for their own lives above all else.
Add in some leverage like family, because the russians will go lower than we can imagine and the possibility of exile in Belarus might be appealing. Even if its unlikely to eventuate. I think he is or was clutching at straws.

My crappy 14 year old mac wont load MSN for some reason. ( It must be Conservative.)
But from the gist of the heading. Its interesting watching the competition for position after the rebellion and lukashenko is truely making hay while the sun shines.
I sense its a form of worry and panic and they are despite appearances, very unsettled.

Just like all autocrats, despots, dictators, controlling the minds of the masses is all important. Fear of some outside force is a good game to retain power.

I read that article earlier. As long as Russia and Ukraine negotiate the details between themselves sounds like wolf negotiating which part of the sheep he'll eat first.
