What should I use to preserve, and add some moisture back to some very dry looking Blue and Black wildebeest horns?

I've sprayed mine down liberally with wd-40 and it has worked very well. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

I've used Lemon oil furniture polish on the horns and antlers of all my mounts. I put too much on a Bighorn sheep's horns once and it made them very dark. After several months, they dried out and again looked like they did when I shot him. A taxidermist once told me to use motor oil on horns and antlers, but I haven't tried it. I don't think motor oil on any horn would be a good idea. Once completely dry, it would begin to do some bad things. I would wait for some of our pro's to suggest what the current method would be. Personally, I've never added anything to any of my horns, only dusting several times per year, and once per year, wiping them down with a damp cloth and spraying with Pro-tex to repel insects. Friends- From some friends of mine that have ranched Texas from the 1880's and know a few things about taxidermy as well, I have heard that the use of Liquid Gold, the material for wood work and cabinentry works great. May the wind be in your face and the sun at your back. P. Mark Stark

I've used the 50/50 for over 50 years now and it's the old standby. Other products will work but none last as long as the 50/50. WD40 is a very thin oil and doesn't last long at all. Liquid Gold can work, but I just never found a need for it. Don't use any oils on the sheep horns, especially the golden sheep as it will stain the horn. RETIRED Taxidermist
