Also posted in the Alaskan forum, thou there I don´t appear to have much luck Confused:

Which is the best thermal underwear for extreme weather ?

Looking for something with several layers, with the lowest moisture regain available...

Intended to use when hunting at temperatures near 0ªF , in a type of hunt where you need to be still and quiet for several hours ...

I have just bought the Maxit thermal bodysuit, but haven`t received it yet so I don´t know still if my expectations will be satisfied with this purchase (I will receive it in a couple of weeks, when my brother returns from the States - so I am still in time to buy something more suitable, if needed... )

suggestions and opinions will be appreciated thumb

Thank you all in advance

Under Armor has been around for just a few years and most of the professional athelets are wearing it. However, its forte has been pulling moisture away from the body. There are two types: Heat and Cold weather. But hold on, soon there will be insulated versions and some are designed to handle extreme cold conditions. You might look for it in any of the major sporting goods stores or contact UA directly. Good hunting, LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

I got the high priced Under Armour cold gear camo insualted undies this year. Worst set of insulated underwear I've ever owned! The cheap Hanes underwear at walmart cost a 5th of these things and work much better.

The best I've had were military issue polypropolene:

http://outersports.com/black-heavy-weight-polypropylene...af43983edcace90c85fc

These work great in extreme cold weather. I hunted in snow while in CO last year and all I wore was these underwear under Treklite camo with a light jacket. Treklite camo is super thin nylon like parachute material. I also wore this type of undies as a base layer when still hunting in -13 degree weather. They are very good insulates.

Good Luck

Afrikaander,

What I have found in undergarments that work for me: Lightweight polyester "any brand" for maximum wicking (This is what the underarmour is also made of) followed by either a midweight or heavy weight Merino Wool thermals depending on temperature. This will continue wicking and the wool will retain heat even is wet.

The most cost effective, good performing thermal underwear I have found is the three weights of Wickers Comfortrel Polyester longs available at Sierra Trading Post. I use mostly the lightweight as a base layer under merino wool longs. But I have friends that swear by the medium and expedition weights as well.

So, I recommend the Comfortrel lightweights as a base layer and then merino wool longs over that. I use Duofold 100% Merino Wool longs from Montana Woolen Shop, Stanfields Superwash Merino Wool longs from Empire Canvas Works, or Ullfrotte 200 gm/sq m from Montana Woolen Shop depending on the conditions. I am currently searching for heavier weight merino wool longs that won't break the bank but am probably going to have to get some Ibex, Smartwool or Icebreaker for that. The online Ibex outlet store has some pretty good deals on their stuff.

Here in Alberta, I have Helly Hansen light and heavy tops and bottoms. I also have a few Stanfields polar fleece and polyprop underwear. Under Armor is good also, but expensive I think for what it does-its the new "FAD" right now.

I use it all in conditions, for work and play.

Previous Under Armor wasn't insulated, regardless of rumor. Only the new product line that is classed by number is insulated. Layered clothing is the best way to go but anytime your still for hours on end it can be brutal. LDK

I used to get silk underwear for mid temps -20 to +40 but haven't looked hard for a few years. It tends to wear out in the crotch and legs. Polypropelene is good as long as you remember to use layers. One set will not cut it for cold temps, -20 and lower IMHE. Gianni

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
