My brother owns some property east of Mt Shasta along the Pit river which is the southernmost boundary of California X-1 deer zone. I was lucky enough to draw a tag so went up to spend some quality time with him and do a little hunting. Arrived up there on Friday, the day before the season and there were a number of deer on his place about 500 yards from his house and some nice bucks with one really good buck (at least for this area). We got out before daylight on Sat and saw several bucks but not any big ones so we thought we would just wait to see what would come along. Passed up a small 4X4 in the afternoon hoping for the big one we had seen on Friday. We got out Sunday morning and saw zip, zero, nada deer. We looked across the river and could see lots of deer in the alfalfa fields including some really nice bucks but they were on the neighbor's property and in a different zone. This is what happened to my brother last year when he drew a tag. On opening day the deer were all across the river. We hiked up on the butte behind the ranch house to see if any deer were up higher but could find nothing but lots of sign and trails. As we were hiking down off of the butte we were discussing other areas to hunt because it looked like this area might be a bust. We got down near the hay fields where we had seen the deer earlier and I saw a legal buck run up into the trees. As I crept down out of the tree line to get a better view, I saw the buck staring at me about 150 yards away. Sitting down to shoot, I could only see his head and waited for him to move. After a few seconds he turned broadside and walked a few steps and gave me a clear shot. I would like to say that I dropped him right there but in fact I missed high. I racked another round in and settled down as the buck still stood and didn't move a muscle. At the second shot he put his head down and headed up into the trees. I followed slowly knowing he was hit well and watching the doe that was with him. I found him 25 yards into the trees looking down at me and put the coup de grace into him. He was soaking wet and had evidently just swam back across the river to chase the doe. Amazingly when I skinned him the last shot was the only one in him and I had missed the first 2 cleanly. Must be time to practice my position shooting! Anyway gun was my old dusty trusty M700 in 30-06. Loads are 150TSX at 2750fps. Maybe this was that Barnes bullet failure thing and they disintegrated before they got to the deer instead of my lousy shooting Have gun- Will travel The value of a trophy is computed directly in terms of personal investment in its acquisition. Excellent deer. Now that you've proven you can stalk to 25 yards we'll expect that from you every year. .

Holy Schnauzers that is a hot buck...how wide is he? Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Big Nate, Yes I was lucky this deer was so stupid. There is a lot of duck hunting going on in this area and the season opens on the same day as the deer season so these deer are used to a lot of folks walking around with guns and a lot of shooting. Guess he thought I was a duck hunter- his mistake. Mike, He was just over 27 inches and 210lbs field dressed. Not the biggest but not the kind to pass in this area. I'm still trying to figure out what happened to my second shot. There was a fence between me and the deer and it is possible that I hit a wire or post and the bullet was deflected. I'll have to check that fence next time I get up there. Have gun- Will travel The value of a trophy is computed directly in terms of personal investment in its acquisition. Robert Ruark

Very nice buck Russ, one of the best CA deer I've seen in a while. Now, about your shooting........ Something about the nut that pulls the trigger I went on a pig hunt Friday and Kyler asked me if I had shot the rifle since my adventure with this deer. He was a little concerned when I told him that I hadn't but I knew it was my fault, not the rifle. We had a pig at about 100 yards, 1 shot through the heart. I guess as long as I have good light and no pesky fences in the way, it's all good.
