We went out with the crossbows yesterday morning and we got set up about 150 yards apart at either end of a small meadow in the woods that I always see a ton of deer in.

Right before dawn, a tall 8 point came in almost underneath my daughter's blind. She couldn't get a shot at him because she is short and couldn't lean out of the blind far enough.

The buck wandered my way and I had him at 50 yards but passed on shooting him as I'm going to try to get my daughter on him next weekend.

Here's a fuzzy photo taken at half light when he paused about 60 yards away from me.

I have fingers crossed for both of you Frank but hoping if works out for your daughter.
Could you put a small step of some kind in her stand to give her a little more shooting height ?

Yesterday, I put in a taller chair and built a 4" tall platform over the floor.

We'll be out early Saturday morning together.

I don't care if I shoot a deer with a sharp stick, but I would like to get a coyote with one. My game cameras showed a lot of daytime coyote trafiic up there in the last couple of weeks.

We both passed on a couple of spikes and a button buck this morning.

While we were walking back out a spike buck followed us:

Then this evening we had a little piebald fawn in our backyard.

Crossbow season goes from goes from the 1st Saturday in September thru the 3rd Monday in January of 2026.

Muzzleloader season is really restricted, the third weekend in Oct. (two days) and later we have a 9 day season starting the second Saturday in December.

Modern firearms starts the second Saturday in November and goes for 16 days.

I am allowed to shoot unlimited does but only one antlered buck, no matter what method of take. And, on my own land I don't need a hunting license or deer tags. (It's almost New Zealand like here!)

Haha, at times I think we need season take restrictions here in certain places to improve trophy quality but I know many, many hunters would be really upset. And at the moment in many places Deer numbers are so high that a lot more need to be shot.
On one place I hunt currently we have an unlimited quantity of hinds we can shoot but only two trophy stags, annually. Due to habitat Trophy potential is mediocre and unlikely to improve due to certain developments occurring just over the boundaries. But it's a cool place to hunt and I really enjoy being there. Hunting is open from March to end of October. The block can be accessed outside those times, just not for hunting.
Your Kentucky seasons seem generous compared to some states. What species can you hunt all year round ?

The southern states have longer deer seasons because of the sheer number of animals and great habitat for them. Our Dept of Fish and Wildlife is begging us to shoot more does. I've told the kids and Wifezilla that they can only shoot bucks that are bigger than any one that the've shot before and that everyone has to take one dry doe this year.

The only animals that we can hunt all year round are coyotes and groundhogs. Everything else is seasonal.

She'll be out tomorrow morning before the storm gets here. Unfortunatey, I won't be with her as the wind is in the wrong direction and it makes the other blind unusable.

My daughter has to have the worst luck. I didn't go with her this morning since the wind direction was such that the only blind that we could use was the one that had the most buck traffic.

So, what happens? Two younger but decent bucks show up at 9AM, 20 yards in front of the blind that she couldn't use.

The chess game of buck hunting. Hope daughter is not too disheartened and will stick with it.

Grant,

She spent three entire seasons hunting in Minnesota without ever taking an animal. She knows that a lot of hunting is being in the right place at the right time.

She's taking Thursday off of work to come out and try again.

That's awesome parenting right there! Hope your daughter gets a clean shot at him next weekend. Great buck!
