My wife questioned my choice this morning citing that I was going to make him MAD.
My response? Darling, I was born with a Red Rider in my hand!
I give all snakes a pass generally but the front step is close enough.
Enjoy and safe travels

Nice shooting.

Joe

After you head shot a moose in its bed with a 30-30 a snake with a BB gun seems completely believable. When I grow up I want to be you!!!

The only good snake...

I've happened across two rattlers in the past 10 days. The first I saw from maybe 8 feet away under a small rock ledge, looked like a fresh molt. I got out of there with the dogs before it really got nervous.

Yesterday, damn near stepped on one and my favorite dog was within 9" of it stretched out and sunning itself. We beat feet out of there but it was way too damn close.

If I didn't live in suburbia...or if I had a 6' shovel with me...

Regards,

Robert

Looks to me like you had plenty of firepower.

I am like you: I like to live and let live. But in this instance, you are correct: waaaaayyyyy too close for comfort!

Rattler wasn't on the menu and the BB gun
has been a useful tool the last few weeks.
Shot a 2nd packrat out of the engine compartment of my Ole green truck last week.
Thanks for the kind words

Some guys think it takes a 300 WBB to take down a rattler, but I like to use 25-0BB. Good thing you didn't gut shoot him-- you'd have had a heck of a tracking situation. Scary creatures when they are too close.

The fourth or fifth day after we arrived in Australia we were driving down the road about 30 miles from Canberra in our little newly acquired Mitsubishi Mirage when I noticed a snake in the road. It wasn't on my side so I slowed down to have a look. The damn thing lifted its head up even with my car window and started tapping on the class as it wanted a piece of me. King Browns scare the crap out of me, the only scarier snake I can think of is the King Cobra. It has the presence of a big male lion.

You have to admit they are the gentlemen of the snake world.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

There was one in the Embassy parking lot the day before he visited. There were probably 10,000 of Australians finest law enforcement officers in Canberra the day he was there. I was on active duty in my un-dress khaki's and I couldn't get within 80 yards of him. Only the Senior Defense Official got to shake hands, and about 2 or 3 of the senior embassy folks.

He has a personal food taster you know.

We had one in the driveway a while back. I whacked it with my Gamo.

The medical costs for a snakebite are pretty frightening.

I was raised on a big West Texas ranch and ranched myself for a number of years on a West Texas ranch...I have killed dozens of them with a hoe or rocks, cheaper than BB's probably saved $5.00 over the 50 or so years! shocker ...

As kids we used to get off our horse and get our rope swinging without a loop and that leaves a big knot on the end and get the snake looking at it then wack him in the head..With a pistol you can slowing wave the pistol in a circular motion and the snake will copy the movement and you squeeze the trigger ever so gently and you will take his head off..Might take a bit of practice but you'll get the hang of it sooner or later!

We killed every rattle snake we saw and don't you believe a rattler will rattle every time you walk by, that he can only strike the distance of his body, or can only strike when coiled, those old wives tales will getcha bitten....

My most interesting snake experience was horse back on my ranch and heard a loud noise, rode over that direction and saw that a portion of a cave had caved in..Got closer and their were at least 200 snakes being devoured by about 50 Javalinas..Those pigs must have gotten bit more than a dozen times each but they just kept eating until the snakes were all gone..Wish I had a camera..Apparantly Javalina are immune to snake bite..

Great shot! tu2 My grandpa's standard method of killing them was with the irrigation shovel that he carried in the truck with him while irrigating the alfalfa fields. He literally killed hundreds of them over the years, and had a big display case in his house of the rattlers (along with another full of Indian arrowheads). Big Grin

I was in Ms AZW's office a few days ago and stepped out the French door to the patio where I was going to light up a stogie. On the headwall above the pool, at the level I was on, was a nice fat rattler. I whacked him with my Gamo.

My grandfather's Red Ryder is on one of my sons' wall. Never knew it was a dangerous game gun, I'd say rattlers qualify.

This a perfect example of how to demonstrate the point that it is not the size of the gun that matters, but the man behind it.

Just imagine, would that snake died as quickly if you had shot it in the tail with a 308 Winchester??

So yesterday morning my wife comes into the house teared up and tells me her favorite laying hen is dead in the hen house. I go out to have a look and I see the hen piled up in the corner and upon closer inspection notice the feathers on the back of her head are all pecked off and 3 eggs busted by her. I look over at the rooster and put 2&2 together. Mind you this rooster is a SOB, he attacks my wife anytime she goes in the coop. I went back in the sun room and grabbed the Daisy Red Rider and went back to the coop and shot the rotten bastard. I will say it took 3 shots. Now the hens are happy and my wife can collect eggs without taking a broom to ward off the rooster. Long live the Daisy Red Rider.
