Anyone have an idea what the average going rate is for leasing hunting property in Delaware? Say something like 20-30 acres wooded with deer and turkey present?

Thanks
Jim

I'd be looking at a lot more than 20-30 acres to hunt on unless the prices are so high that's all you can afford. 20-30 acres is awful small, especially to do a decent turkey hunt. In one morning of a typical turkey hunt up here in Michigan I probably cover 500+ acres when I run and gun!

Bill,

Fix those taxes in PA and I'd consider buying land there. Delaware has you beat bigtime tax wise for us soon to be ancient retirees.

Big Grin

Cheers
Jim

Jim,

You've looked at the same info we did. Very attractive area financially for a retiree. We just didn't want to be near that I-95 corridor mess. I didn't look into the local hunting opportunities.

I guess everyone has to do what they have to do. We were only paying $1500 a gun for a year around lease down in south Texas for well over 1000 acres. Then my Dad quit hunting when he got into his 80s and I've only been back a couple times to hunt on a friend's place up near Rock Springs in the Hill country.

I thought the tax situation was good in Ak with no state tax and you get an oil check every year. I thought about retiring there but my wife won't come with me and I am starting to get used to her.

Property taxes and cost of living is high in AK, not to mention the dark cold winters get older the older you get. My wife's family is in PA so Delaware fits the bill.

Doesn't matter where "home" is to us. We plan on traveling a bunch anyway.

I am a Delawarean. White tail deer hunting in Delaware can be excellent. While I do not lease land here, I expect the prices are not cheap. Your best bet will be the two lower counties: Kent and Sussex. They are rural. The northern county, New Castle, is more highly developed. Delaware also has very good Canada Goose, Snow Goose and duck hunting. If you like to chase squirrel and rabits, you can do a lot of that here as well. The reason I don't do much deer hunting in Delaware is because it is a shotgun only state. While slug guns with fully rifled barrels can be deer accurate up to 200 yards (and I have killed deer cleanly at close to that with slugs), I greatly prefer to hunt with a rifle for big game. Delaware is a very nice place to live. The weather is moderate, the taxes are low, and the attitudes, at least in Kent and Sussex Counties, are pretty relaxed.

No dog in this fight, just an observation. Hunters set and read these type discussions, and then wonder why our numbers are declining. I can understand a persons want or desire to be able to hunt near their home, and even though I would not do so, I can understand a person's willingness to pay premium prices, especially if the chance to kill an actual trophy presents itself for a shot.

I have a hard time understanding how hunters expect to be able to hold onto the tradition of hunting, when so many individuals have been priced out of the activity. Some of the prices being quoted, would get a person on to several hundred acres of land here in Texas, or pay for a guided hunt for elk in the Rockies.

We are our own worst enemy and as long as some of us are willing to pay such prices, I only see more individuals being forced out of hunting, and when folks get forced out of something simply because they don't have access to the $$$$$$ someone else does, it is going to be a hard sell to get them to support an activity they were forced out of. JAO, nothing more.

Trophy hunting at it's finest. Your right a 100%. Just look at western big game tags, which state wouldn't cost you thousands just to apply for a few animals.
