+1, though my preference is the 150g Partitions running a bunch of the same powder (gives 3000 fps in our BDLs 22" barrels). My son got his first cow elk at 150 yards on the run with a 130g CoreLokt. It worked just fine. Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

My best friend uses a .270 for about everything. Having seen him shoot 150 pound whitetails that leave no blood trail and run 100 to 250 yards would make me uncomfortable with it also. He was using Remington green box 130's. So, perhaps a premium would help. But, elk hunting finds me with a 338WM and 250 grain partitions. They taste too good to lose!

Sorry to break the news but a "premium bullet" or a different caliber will not help your friend. I suspect some poor shooting, if he can correct that he could move to a .223 and reliably kill 150 pound whitetails. There is not an Elk on the planet that will take a double lung shot whether it exits or not with a .270, and Remington or Winchester cup and core ammo and come anywhere close to surviving it.

I've seen one guy in particular who has killed several elk with 130 grain Remington Core-Lokt ammo, and several deer, too, both whitetails and mulies. I'm sure he'll keep on doing his thing until he decides to give that rifle to me. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

Well, being there with him to help gut and drag, I can tell you first hand. The shots were right behind the crease of the front leg, half way down the body. Classic lung shot. I have seen him shoot 4 this way, all with the same lack of blood trail.

So how did you find them.

same way everyone else does, move the direction they ran, look for the nasty, thick and deep ravine. Get down in the gully and check the brush piles. As we are hunting my family farm that has been in my family for 120 years and I have been hunting it over 50 years. I generally, have a good idea where the deer will go. Shots range between 30 and 130 yards from the hunting cabin. Depending on if the game comes from the left, right or front, you can pick the gully they wil fun to. I have only lost 1 deer in hunting almost 60 years. I did find it the next day, but the coyotes got to it first.
