Top 10 animals to hunt in America

I have been thinking a lot lately about this. Reason being, I probably won't get to hunt everything that I would like to in my lifetime. That being said, I would like to get some good ideas on some of the best animals to hunt and make a priority list so that I can at least have something to shoot for. I guess the point of this is to see other people's top 10 so that I don't miss any animals and can properly research this.

America or North America? I'd list whitetail deer, mule deer, antelope, black bear, grizzly, elk, moose, any of the sheep, mountain lion, and mountain goat. If the sheep were taken off the selection I'd go with turkeys and coyotes as being very worthy.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

Todd Williams list is perfect.
Several of these are getting harder to come by, which means much more expensive, but cheap was not a requirement of the list.
I've been lucky enought to take all these animals, but I'm still looking forward to hunting most of them again.

Small game, upland birds, waterfowl, varmints (birds and mammals)............

I see no need to limit it to big game and I spend more time in pursuit of the above than I do deer, bear, hogs, etc.

And I hunt year round by being a multi species opportunist.

Can I play?

My top animals for someone what rarely ventures out of the Mississippi Delta -

deer, whitetail - we don't have any other kind
bear, black
elk, tennessee - if I could ever get lucky and draw a tag
squirrel, fox or gray will do
rabbit, swamp or cottontail
racoon
fox, gray or red
coyote, any color
wild dog, especially the one who led that pack after me
domestic hogs the next time that one wanders over to my place
the runaway horse that's thrown me twice at the bird dog field trials
and don't forget coot - opps, that's a game bird
But I definitely draws the line with possum and armadillos...

Not I, but having watched Swamp People countless times, I think to get one gator would be interesting, but it looks like, you see one gator hunt, you've seen them all...it looks like just another way to make a living after that. I guess there's a limit to how many times I can listen to Troy, "shoot 'um Liz!!"

Wolf? Never likely to get the chance. We do have a river here in W. Tenn. named after them, but that was 200 years ago (red wolves contributed that to the local geography).

Honestly I don't see the attraction the pro wolf, wanting to dance with them or whatever, crowd out West has for that animal. Trying to look at it practically, I would shoot their cousin, the coyote, here on sight out of general principles. So I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around why exactly a wolf gets any better slack.

Actually Shack, the Pro-Wolf crowd you mentioned doesn't live in the west except for Californians/ex-Californians, most of the Pro-Wolfer's don't live within hundreds if not thousands of miles to the nearest wolf habitat.

Another of those cases of outsiders dictating what the residents have to deal with.

I hunted wolves in the Yukon Terr. while on a dall sheep/moose hunt. Took three and they were a kick to hunt. Here in Idaho a wolf in the bag is considered a definite plus on any hunt. I am surprised at the demand to hunt wolf.

That's why I put them on there, just for a one time thing. That's really what I based my whole list on and had the variety that I did, just to hunt them all at least once and see which I liked the best.

I did the gator hunt once back in 06. That, I can assure you, is a NON EVENT. It's more like aligator fishing than hunting. No hunting to it. Simply put a piece of chicken on a hook and tie the string, not line but string, to a tree, come back later in the day or the next, and if he swallowed the chicken and hook, you simple reel him in as you would a fish, then shoot it in the head with a 22 pistol. I did get a nice pair of boots out of it though.

Had a wolf tag while hunting black bear last April in Idaho. Got a bear but didn't see any wolves. I don't have a huge interest in taking one but certainly would as a target of opportunity.

On my list earlier, I left polar bear off simply because it is no longer importable into the U.S. Otherwise, it would be No. 1 on my list.
