And why shouldn't you, it has taken more game than any other round in America and Africa. There are reasons some folks shoot magnums, and some are not so rational, but they are not the be all end all.

Some folks get a kick out of shooting big bores on everything, others get the same since of being by shooting animals with a 17 Rem..

The truth is their is a place for the 06 and a place for the 300s, it just depends on the conditions you hunt under and where you hunt.

I have shot a 25-35 all my life for deer and even a few elk, as it is the rifle I grew up with and I test myself ever now and then with it as a hunter. I am limited by it..I know my .280 is a hell of a lot better caliber..

I have used the 222 on deer successfully but I know my 06 is better.

I would prefer my 300 H&H for antelope or elk over my 06, but I have shot many elk and antelope with my 06..I hunted elk for years with my 06 and 180 and 200 gr. Noslers, but today I find the .338 a much better choice, and so is my 300 with 200 gr. Woodleigh or Noslers IMO..still I would not hesitate to hunt deer or elk with my 06. I went to the .338 because Idaho elk go to the dark timber and it seem all my shots are going South and the .338 with 250 Noslers or 300 gr. Woodleighs stands them on their nose better than the 06.

I guess I believe in the right tool for any job and won't be limited to what caliber I choose.

But most people that shoot the .300WM use 165gr or 180gr bullets, which makes no sense to me; that's just a faster .30-06...

I agree with the idea that if you want more then a .30-06 the logical step up is .338WM, not .300WM.

My browning A-bolt in 300wm that I had about 12 years ago chronographed 2915 fps with 200gr bullets can't remember the powder but I belive it was a couple grains under max. so I am sure I could have gotten around 3,000 fps or so had it of been maxed out. If you are shooting that fast in a 30-06 with 180's and powders that are avaliable to the public I don't think I want to b be the one pulling the trigger. Don't get me wrong I like the 30-06 and I am not knocking it by no means.

A couple of guys tonight at the range were impressed with the groups I shot at the range tonight...

Earlier they were telling me about their 300 Ultra Mags and their 257 Weatherbys they were shooting...

When I brought my targets in, they meandered over and admired a couple of groups that I had shot with my rifle.. when they asked the caliber, I told them it was a Winchester 6mm Medium Short Mag....

They were impressed.... although they never heard of the caliber, they didn't want me to know so evidently.. cause if they asked what a 6mm Medium Short Mag Winchester was... I would have answered.. 243....

But since they were of the Magnum Philosophy, I didn't want them to have the pain of knowing they had been outshot by a humble 243....

I shoot my 180 gr 06's at just over 2700 When I wanted to go faster I got a 300 wm. and shoot 180's in the mid 2900s.

i have a 740 that my grandfather bought new. its a 30-06 22" BBl version w/ a 4x tasco on it.
i have no doubt that i could have killed every deer i have ever taken with it AND that every deer fron now on could be taken with it.
then again i dont live out west were it seems people like to shoot 400+ yards . here in the south we like to close the gap and try to take our deer close.

In other words, nobody is ever satisfied with what they have. No matter what it is, it always has to be "improved" some way, somehow, no matter how stupid.

Quite right you are, seafire. Based on their relative case capacities, the .270, the .243, and even the wee .17 Rem are all "magnums." The .30-06 is more of a "magnum" than the .375 is. It's a very badly abused name.

it's the same reason we walk by a slender woman that is 34B-23-34 in favor of one that ten pounds over fighting trim that goes 38D-26-38. You know you can't get more in your mouth than fits in a training bra...but lordy-lordy, isn't that extra ten pounds of fatty tissue wonderful?

Second, there is a sense of controlling the big boys that is almost sexual in its sensations...besides none of your buddies have one.

Been there, done that. Properly loaded, the '06 is perfectly adequate for any and all North American game.

Ah, Jarrod, that brings back images of a long lost girlfriend. Such a figure is perfection--no change could have improved upon it. My wife's about a 36A-, which, well, uh, never mind.

to each his own, but I went for the big package 19 years ago...5'7" 135. Went to her folks last summer and her mother had found all of her prom dresses...they all still fit, and WOW!! isn't the right word. AND, yesterday she told me to "...just go ahead and buy that CZ 505 Gibbs if you need it...". As long as I take her and the Electra Glide to Albuquerque for the Balloon Festival in October and pay the card off before Christmas.
Gosh, I love that woman!!

Cazador....

you are applying logic and using your head, in an arena, that more guys cater to their testosterone than common sense...

then they get all pissed off and start calling you a weenie, when you point that out to them....

of course the testosterone crowd, thinks it is okay to call some one who doesn't cater to their way of thinking, a name like a pansy or weanie, or pussy or whatever....NON Testosterone insinuating terms..

but they don't think it is okay for you to call them dumbasses.. a NON intelligence or NON Thinking term...

Magnums have their place, but in my opinion, to many guys who carry them can't apply them to their potential.. just their minds and egos can figure that out...or won't let them...

But once they figure it out... they don't spend too much time broadcasting it when they trade in the 300 Weatherby for a lighter kicking 30/06 or 270 Winchester...

Humility in cartridge choice, and humility in downgrading must go hand in hand..
