I found a Remington 721 with a Weaver 2.5-5X at Cabelas in AZ for $300 sitting on the used gun rack. I examined the bore and it was bright and sharp rifling. The finish on the barrel is well worn and the stock was a bit dinged up and when I got it home and cleaned up the wrist had a slight hairline crack. I put a Leupold VX-III on it and loaded up a 180gr accubond with a load of Reloader 22 from Nosler and the thing stacks the bullets right on top of each other. First load I tried and it just shoots amazing. I tweaked it just a bit and it still shoots just as good. Like was said in an earlier post. If hand loaded it can match most of the 300 magnums out there. I noticed Lyman had a load that was equal to the 300 Weatherby.

The 300 H&H is probably the only bolt action cartridge I covet but don’t have. I need to find a model 70 or just an express action to build one. That’s the only cartridge I can imagine adding to my stable of Model 70’s. I’m actually considering selling off most of my other rifles, so perhaps I’ll replace the 300 rum I’m going to part with, with an H&H.

Indeed, replace it with the H+H. As the old adage goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I recently sold mine (on a P-17 action; 1/2 rnd, 1/2 oct. bbl) that was a true piece of art W/ super wood; but he wanted it more than I did.

I really like the 300H&H.

I have never tried one; IMO the 300 RUM is the best 30 cal magnum out there. Seems like anything based on the .404 Jeffrey case is extremely accurate.

AZ, The RUM is super hot, super strong and super loud. I struggle with the recoil on the RUM and my suppressors help. I have found that the .300WM and .300HH are the best for me. I am really liking the .300HH due to feeding and ease of bolt handling. Feels smoother than the .300WM. Anyway, the RUM is excellent but too much for me...

About this time last year at our Filer Gun show I bought a beautiful Rem 721 with a Leupold 4x12 in 300 H&H..Offered the guy $600 for it as I was about spent out. Last day and and hour of the show best time to negotiate. sold it for $1200 before I could get out the door..mixed emotions, but I tend to be that way, Im a depression kid I guess anytime I can double my money on a horse or a gun, its a done deal, wel most of the time.. A year later and at the same Filer gun show I bought a super nice pre 64 mod 70 in 300 H&H and a box of ammo, stopped on the way home and fired a few rounds, and remember what mild recoil it always had by comparison to other 300..Recalled my favorite mule deer and antelope load was a case full of old 4831 with a 150 gr. bullet at 3314 FPS, a load I got out of an old Hodgen book. Compare that to the hot rodded 30s of today..My elk load with that old powder crowded 3000 fps, used tough bullets..Nosler partitions, Rem Corelokt RN worked well enough. Nay sayers: Its in the book! Another fan of the venerable 300 H&H here. Last April I visited a little shop in Castle Rock, WA. While perusing the used rack, I found a pristine Ruger 1s wearing a Leupold VX3 3.5-10 and chambered for the ole 300. Couldn’t get my wallet out fast enough. A perfect mate for my 1h in 375 H&H. **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

I am always amused at the cartridge choice discussions. The truth is that for any particular caliber there are many fine candidates that will all "fill the bill". For most of us, what we select is simply our personal preference. And, on this score, I have always been a big fan of the 300 H&H. I am pretty sure that not one Elk would know the difference between a Winchester 300, 308 Norma or 300 H&H to mention a few. So have at it the way you want, there will always be plenty of others to agree (or dis-agree)... Edward Lundberg

I hate these blogs that bring to mind old and dear calibers clustered with BS, nostalgia, and stories of old..Once again I had to weaken and go buy a damn 300 H&H, Hope the Red Gods of hunting allow me to keep this one!! Thats always a crap shoot with me but Im trying... Yes in fact I suppose IM a dyed in the wool nostalgic, so what! I wouldn't have it any other way.. I avoided 30 cal stuff for many years, like 7mm to 338 for the difference, 30 cal wasn't enough difference so to speak. Saw the Win 1885 on a shot show special. 300H&H and 375 H&H, picked up a 300. In that platform it seemed to be the right fit, special edition gun, cool gun, what the heck. Then I also ordered a Krieghoff SXS in 30R blaser as I couldn't have either version of the H&H in it. That 1885 is a pleaseant gun to shoot, 10.2lbs with the scope on it, and it swings & settles beautifully offhand. several years ago I did a lot of hunting with my 300H& and 250 gr bullets, it was basically the 318 Wesley Richards balistic clone. Thats no light praise.. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
