CrazyhorseconsultingDead Horse Issues!!!!
Please feel free to help me out on this.
Following are what I consider "Dead Horse Issues" on Accurate Reloading. The reason I am calling them "Dead Horse Issues", are as follows:
1. There will never be 100% agreement on them.
2. Everyone that has an opinion on these subjects feels that their opinion is the only correct opinion and no amount of contradictory evidence is going to change their mind.
3. Dead, has several degrees of being.
Last but not least, they are what keep this place fun and interesting.
"Dead Horse Issues"
1. Premium Bullets.
2. .223 as a "Deer" rifle.
3. 35 Whelen vs. 9.3x62.
4. Hunting inside a high fence.
5. "Tipping".
6. Anything concerning Peter Hathway Capstick.
Anyone else have any topics they feel are "Dead Horse Issues". You will notice that I did not list anything from the ARPF as everything on there is a "DHI"!

This is an interesting topic. I'll think about and may post later, but for now, IMO, anything re the 223 is deader that dead (including the deer shot with it)

. I have no idea why anyone would want to discuss such a useless cartridge at all.

Dead Horse Issue definition: An issue that will never be resolved due to differences of opinion on said issue. These issues can also be considered circular in that the discussions/arguements about them start and end at the same point.
As I said in the OP, these type discussions keep AR interesting, but it doe not change the fact that they are issues that will never be resolved to anyone's satisfaction.
Another DHI is Antler Restrictions In Texas.
The DHI's are fun and provide a lot of useful information to those willing to take the time to sort thru the BS and hyperbole, but by their very nature, they will never be reolved, and I don't see that as being a bad thing. JMO.

That's what we call hunting hard. I don't run a heater so it's especially hard.

In actuality this one is not a DHI.
Looked at realistically, it is not actually hunting, it is shooting/shopping, trying to decide which animal the person will shoot.
Additionally, here in Texas because of the lack of Public Land, one of the reasons so many Texans go to other states and countries where they can actually hunt, people wanting to "Hunt" here at home are really limited as to what they can do and be successful.
The only DHI aspect of this is personal definition of what is or is not "Hunting".

KabluewyThat's why I put the word "hunting" in quotes.

Oh, may I add to your list of DHI subjects - poking fun at Texans. I know it's a DHI, but I just enjoy it so much.

And let's not forget to include long range shooting within the "hunting" debate.
Don't forget about the 50 BMG, and where it fits in the shooting world.

Mike_DettorreWhat I learned on AR...was spawned by dead horses
MikeLegistine actu quod scripsi?
Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

montea6bHere are my inputs:
1. Wood versus synthetic stocks
2. Heating treating/setback of milsurp Mausers
3. Long range hunting shots (I guess you could lump this under "ethical hunting")
4. Any claimed superiority of one cartridge over another when the difference is less than .030" and 300FPS
5. Gunmakers that take people's down payment and don't deliver on schedule
6. Catastrophic receiver failures

1. Shot placement is everything
2. While you can kill a horse with a 223, practical minimum caliber is 7mm and above
3. It is not ethical to shoot a horse while you are riding it, you can shoot from a vehicle only if local laws and your outfitter approve.
