Does anyone have any experience with this caliber. I am really interesting in building an AR Varmint Rifle in this caliber?

I built up a 6.8SPC truck gun using a Ruger 77 AllWeather with a Remington 270Win take off barrel. It's a sub 3/4moa shooter with Hornady 110gr V-max factory ammo at 2600fps for the 20" barrel. Drop's woodchucks and whitetail deer with small exit wounds. The only deer I shot with it ran 12 yards with a small exit wound from a heart shot at 100 yards. I like it for it's intended purpose, killing targets of opportunity from my pickup truck...

For sporting purposes I think this cartridge will offer medium range performance in a medium action with a medium caliber. I do not think it is best suited for varmints, but I do think the all around nature will have appeal. Member NRA, SCI- Life #358 28+ years now! For a couple years now I've been interested in this cartridge in a Mini 14, I think this would be a fun gun for keeping in the truck and whacking Coyotes and jackrabbits, might be a good hog rifle too. A CZ carbine would be a nice fit for this one too.

In an AR platform its hard to beat the 6.5 Grendel, many more bullets. You can use 85gr and 95 or even 100gr for varmints and then choose a 120 or 125gr for deer, although a bullet like the 100gr BT or 100gr partition would work for both. The Grendel doesnt have very high velocities but it beats the 7.62X39 and .308 win at long range energy and drift, check it out, its an awesome performer and much more useable than the 6.8 with only a 110 and 115gr bullets.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad some of you mentioned the 6.5 Grendel, as I have been kind of torn between the two. After reading your replies and the article in the latest issue of "Special Weapons", I believe I'm sold on the Grendel. ~ Marc

plus it's a cooler name... NRA Life Member Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

I kinda like the 6.8 SPC... I'll be using it for my kid's first deer rifle, as the recoil is very mild, while still punching a decent sized hole in deer. More than adequate energy past 200 yards (although my kids will be limited to 50-75 yard shots to start with). I don't feel you are limited to just the 110's and 115's... in a bolt gun, bullet selection is actually very good. I'll be using 130 grain ballistic tips for whitetail, and they may very well work also in AR style semi autos.

also fascinating, would be a 6.5 BR, or more so the 6.5 BR necked up to 270. now that would be interesting. you could buy 130 grain bullets by remington or winchester in bulk for inexpensive shooting.

6.5 Grendel, ready made brass Lapua, other ammo available, Cheap 120 or 140 gr Corelokt, 120 better, all you need on deer, less expensive dies than wildcat, more performance than 6.8, and bullets made to open up at lower velocities. Why for the life of me people overlook the 6.5 G must be from lack of knowledge when considering the 6.8. I believe the 6.8 needs to fade away personally. And if the 'experts' choose the best round, the 6.8 will die if 6.5G goes military. 270 does wonderful in Winchester or WSM, a 308 based round would do great, but 260 and 708 cover either side........so..... varmints through military do well with proper 6mm and 6.5mm in my opinion, often much better than 22's esp as the 'target' gets larger and shoots back.

The problem with the 6.8SPC is that regular .277 bullets made for the .270win would not open up in the SPC a 130gr 270 win bullet would most likely pencil through on game shot as the 270 has a muzzle velocity approaching 3,100fps way more than the SPC, it was a bad approach to begin with. With all the available .264 projectiles the 6.5 grendel has unlimited possibilites. Heck, even the .260 rem will outperform the old stand by .308 win at long range, it the highly efficient bullets that do it, they are all there waiting for someone to take advantage of em, and the Grendel does this very well. As a side note the 50 Beuwolf also looks to be like a great, medium range game getter, very interesting......
