The 54 grain load looks the goods if it is repeatable. For your target game you only have to be able to break a 6" plate at 200 yards.

I'd start practising .... field shooting positions at 50,100,150,200 and 250 yards and learn the fall of shot.

Wow, all those stats, pages and pages of them and sniping back and fourth, my how the old wore out 06 can bring hunters to their milk!! page after paged or what has been known since at least 1935 my first year on earth...

And all this time the 06 has set records at some of the most impressive shoots in the world, hundreds if not thousands or little african boys shot their first buffalo, Lion and elephant with thos 220 gr. solids and softs, cowboys packed them in a saddle scabbard and shot elk, moose, deer, bear,; every WW1 and 2 and some from Korea soldier came home and got one from the NRA for $7.50, used it to shoot everything with, and Teddy shot most everything in Africa with it..

Makes one think that you can't stretch the 30-06, you can only stretch the shooter skill and thats not uncommon..

My advise: Never attack the o6, your in for a beating... horse It's an American icon, it earned its stripes, its a hero..Its apple pie and motherhood, Texans rate it with the Alamo, Kentucky with Daniel Boone, and btw it still works real good. I got one, always had one, never be without one..

Oh, Hornady has released a 225 grain bullet in 30 caliber and a stiff charge of H4831SC....

thinking about throating out an 06 barrel to 280AI specs.....with the above bullet and powder...

got one now that is overly long throated as a candidate...

just something to play with...

Any comments, criticisms and instances of outright abuse are welcome as always! hilbily

Thanks again for all your help also chaps.

Hey Amir, glad to see you are getting there. One thing for sure is that I think you will be pleased with the performance of the 200 gr Accubond on game.

Re your ES and SD; I have found that seating depth has a profound effect on reaching a low value there

For this load the progression to a low ES of 8 and a SD of 4 at .060" off and back up again is almost perfectly illustrated.

The latest experiments at the weekend were very successful Woods, thanks again for your help on this.

I loaded up a batch of Accubonds varying the OAL from 10 thou off the lands to 100 thou and shot them over the chronograph this weekend.

The results mirrored yours in that the overall velocity went down as the OAL decreased and I found a sweet spot at 75 thou off the lands that resulted in half inch groups and an ES of 6fps... Cool Big Grin

The velocity has gone down to almost exactly 2600 fps.

I wonder if the pressure is commensurately lower too?

This thread continues to impress me. I am now thinking about how I can load a lighter bullet for coyotes. I hope this keeps up.

Cheers,

I have some 125 grain Sierra soft points and considered this but the problem seems to be that with a bullet with such a low BC, the extra 100-150fps velocity would make bugger all difference at ranges past 200-300 yards.

I have a 308 that has a very accurate load with the 125 grain bullets at 3170fps ( It has a longer barrel than my 06 and the 308 is more efficient with lighter bullets anyway than the 06 ) and so saw no point in it.

If you do try it I would suggest a 125 grain Ballistic Tip with a BC of ~.38.

In case you do want to try it here is a QL run of the data in a 24", QL standard case volume 30.06, if you give me your case capacity, barrel length and preferred OAL I can do a more exact run for you:

 Cartridge : .30-06 Spring.
Bullet : .308, 125, Sierra SP 2120
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.150 inch or 80.01 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch or 609.6 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-17

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 0.806% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

OK, as extension to this thread:
What is the biggest you've taken with a .30-06?

Boddington mentions having shot giraffe with the .30-06 (Safari RIfles II). I understood, although he didn't specifically say so I think, that they took body shots on giraffe using Federal Trophy Tipped bullets.
Would anyone really subscribe to this? Head/neck shot, for sure; body shots with solids maybe; but body shots with expanding bullets?
