Since I will probably never hunt outside of N America, here would be my (all metric) short list.

All in bolt action, the 5mm CF Mag in a M591, the 6.5X55 & 8X57 on VZ500 actions, 280 in M700 CDL & the 8X68sS on an Oberndorf M98K action.

  • 5mm Rem CF Mag (or maybe a 204 Rugar)
  • 6.5X55
  • 280 Rem (AKA 7mm Express)
  • 8X57 IS
  • 8X68S

The 5mm CF Mag, 280 & 8X57 I already have, the 6.5X55 & 8X68S are in the works.

1. Custom 257 Roberts AI.
2. Sauer 200 in 30/06 and I won't even try the switch barrel I get more calibers thing. Big Grin If you let me though I would get to add 6.5x55, .308 and 9.3x62 to the list .
3. Sauer 90 in 8x68S
4. 416 Taylor
5. Kreighoff .470 NE

He did indeed say BG.

7-08
.338WM

If I were gonna shoot a jumbo, I'd add the 416RM or a .458WM, but there's little likelyhood of that happening.

If you wanted to do it on the cheap, get a 30-06 and be very careful when hunting the great bears.

I should have had a 223 or something for fox and saving pelt. For my hunting its mostly the sights and how well they can be carried, that limit the usefulness of the different guns

That gives me plenty of worl-wide coverage and very similar tragectories I have and use all but the 416 Taylor wich is in progres. I may change the 416 to a B&M Michael 458 is doing some good things but the ballistics dont change much.

.338 Win Mag
.375 Weatherby Mag
.458 Lott

That being said, I don't currently own any of them (after all, we can own more than five). But, if I had to put together a five gun big game battery, those would be it-you're covered from pigs to buffalo.

The five I own:

6.5x55
6.5x284
308Win
9.3x62
416RemMag

All on one action/stock- The Blaser R93 (But I do have five stocks... Roll Eyes)

Hmmm, Blazer? I had one in 1977 but it had four wheels. Could he be mistaken? Or is it how he transports his bolt actioned rifles?
