For the fun of it, here's mine:

1) .308 Win bolt rifle
2) .338 Win Mag pre-64 M70 bolt rifle
3) 9,3x74R Double rifle
4) .416 Rigby CZ 550 bolt rifle
5) .470 NE double rifle

I'd trade the 9,3x74 Double rifle for an .375 H&H M70 SS Classic CRF bolt rifle if I had to go all bolt rifles. I'd rather have the doubles.

Since I don't hunt dangerous game here are my rifles in the safe;
.22lr Sako model P94S
222 Rem Husqvarna model 2001,
7mm-08 Sako Finnlight,
9.3x57 Husqvarna model 146. (A 9.3x62 might be a better round but I'm happy with it's older brother).
All four are accurate rifles.
Were I to need a big'n then it would probably buy a Ruger Magnum in 458 Lott.
Please guys convince my wife I should buy a 458 Lott Wink

I don't even see the need to have five for big game, but if I have to pick five I would choose...

.243 Winchester

.308 Winchester

.338 Winchester Magnum

.375 H&H Magnum

.458 Winchester Magnum

(If you are not planning on leaving North America you can scrap the .458 and add a .270 Winchester.)

Not exactly 5 for big game but...
.22lr
.22-250 varmint rifle
.243 ultra light
.300 WSM
.358 STA (due home end of april)
.458 win mag
This is what I'm shooting now. The WSM could just as well be a Win mag, but I like the Kimber rifle it's chambered in. My 5th for big game would be a 7mm Rem mag. The 3 I've had were very accurate.

YA gotta have a .22 LR

If you handload, a .30-06 bolt action is all you need if you know how to shoot!!

Handloaded 12 ga pump pretty well rounds it out.

5???.........HHHMMMMM.........This would be my selection:

1. 22 Long Rifle. Because it is a must have Cool

2. 22-250. It is the rifle I shoot the most.

3. 30-06. It will take care of 90% of my hunting needs.

4. 375HH. Some Day I will hunt Alaska & Africa

5. 416 Rem MAg. Just because I WANT a big bore thumb And Buff will be my main target.

I COULD be quite content with these 5. BUT thankfully I do not have to limit myself LOL

I know a local kid who. with his two-years older brother, kept his family (father, mother, and SIXTEEN brothers and sisters) fed year-round with deer & bear meat. He and his brother only co-owned two rifles. A Savage Model 4 in .22 LR and a Savage Model 340 in .30-30. He only used the .30-30 for bear and elk.

Everything considered, if I could only have one and had to carry it, the ammo, and all other sirvival gear with me for more than maybe a week at a time, I'd go with the .22 LR for everything.

For more likely North American applications, and using ONLY my own handloads, I'd choose a battery of:

- .22 LR
.25-35 WCF
.30-06
.375 H&H
12 gauge

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
