Big game, not including .22 LR or 20 gauge, without which life would be without much zip...

.223 AI

243 AI

7mm magnum

30-06

375 H&H

Of the five I have only the 7mm magnum, a pretty much unmodified Winchester model 70. Odd how often it's been enough...

Here is what I currently have as my 5 gun big game battery. I figure I should be set for just about everything in NA that I will ever hunt out to about 300 yards or so. I am planning on an Idaho elk hunt in about 3 years so I may need to do some tweaking although my partner tells me I should be fine with the 350 mag. Mike

.270
30.06
.350 rem mag

Mike27, your .270 or '06 are ideal for elk. One of my favorites, and one I have used to kill a bunch of them, is the '06 with 180 gr. bullets.

I am relatively certain I will never go to Afrika or hunt big bears anywhere on the planet. So the really big bores are out for me. I may hunt elk one day but it's not looking good due to the redtail thieves. Here is my list of guns in my 5 firearm battery.

1911A1 .45acp
Ruger 10/22 .22lr
12 ga pump gun with both rifled and bird barrels
bolt action .270 with a leupold vx3 3-9x40
bolt action .300 win mag with same scope.

Does anyone really read this stuff. I don't, just kinda scan through them. Read the first sentence and move on.

All I need is a 12 ga shotgun, a .22 rifle, a 30-06 and a .357 magnum revolver.

the rest is wants.

My 5 choices are

.204 Ruger
.280 Remington
300 WSM
375 H & H (or 338 WM)
.458 Lott.

I own the first 3 so very biased, just waiting for the funds for the last 2. Ive owned and shot(.338) and shot (.375) and found they were massive doses of fun. Saw a new CZ550 Safari magnum in .458 Lott in a gunshop that was very reasonably priced - my favorite big bore.

Hell I know there ain't anything down here that needs the power of the last 2 but a trip to Alaska and Africa are on my to do list. What better excuse to own such big bores I say?

Holy resurrected threads Batman!

.22 LR
.223
7mm Weatherby Magnum
.375 H&H

I may sell the Weatherby for a .308 or .30-06 mainly so I can find factory ammo in a jam.

Big game that I hunt...

.22-250 deer
.270 win anything
7.65x53 anything
.3006 anything
.338 win anything

They are all wonderful harvesters.

If I could only have 2 cals to hunt with for whatever reason it would be the.22long and the .3006 or .270win.

223AI
257 Bob
7-08
338 Fed
9,3x62

Should cover about everything I will hunt, have all of them except 9,3x62 and that is next years project.

well, down here in new zealand i think youd find most people only have 1 or 2 rifles, a 22lr/22mag and something like the 270/7-08/308/30-06 to take care of deer and goats.my 280ackly would handle anything down here.

22lr (for cheap practice)
257 Weatherby
300 Winchester Magnum
375 H&H Magnum

With the exception of the Weatherby, the other choices are driven, in part, by range of bullet weights and ammunition availability in various parts of the world.
