Please join me in celebrating the 100th birthday of America's best ever cartridge.....the .30-06.

Through two world wars and Korea and a million hunting trips.......it's still one of the finest of the world's cartridges.

<tips hat>

I'm going to have a 98 Mauseer built into a lightweight hunting rifle this year chambered in 30-06, my way of honoring our centurion. A few more parts and its off to the 'smith.

Happy birthday to the best all around caliber! I has taken more animals in North America than any other will. It is the best rifle to start our up and coming hunters with, and ammo is easy to come by anywhere you go. I would not trade my Sako Hunter 30-06 for all of the Rye Whisky in Canada.

Ah, yes. And a salute to the rifle it came out in also. I only have a few more than a half dozen of the great Springfield 1903s and many are in the good old "ought" six. Wink

I wish I had a bottle of 100 year old bourbon in order to drink a toast to the world's greatest all-around rifle cartridge.

I have two .30-'06's: a Winchester Model 70 and a Savage Model 110E. Both are MOA or sub-MOA shooters (depending on me, not the rifles) with 165-grain Nosler BT's at 2840 fps. I also have a decent load for the Model 70 with 200-grain Speer Grand Slams. I would not hesitate to field this rifle and cartridge in pursuit of any game animal in North America, save the great bears. And in a pinch, loaded with 200-grain or heavier bullets (or 180-grain Fail-Safes or Barnes Triple Shock-X bullets), even those.

What can I say about the -'06 that hasn't already been said 10,000 times before? Other than I knew it would be the chambering of the first centerfire I would purchase (it was) from the time I turned ten years old. Some things claim to be a classic; the .30-'06 Spfd is a true classic, in every sense of the word.

I killed my first deer with that Model 70, a honest-to-goodness 245-yard shot with a 180-grain Remington Core-Lok't roundnose sighted in at 100 yards (no more needs to be said about that!). That rifle and cartridge inspires confidence. So much so that, if I received a call telling me I had 72 hours to pack for an all-expenses paid plains game safari, that Model 70 and the cases loaded with the 200-grain Grand Slams would be the rifle amongst all my others I would reach for without a second thought.

If I could, I would order a Dakota Model 76 stocked with XXX grade English walnut with ebony foreend tip and cheekpiece with shadowline, 22 LPI Fleur-de-lis checkering, Talley QD rings and a dovetail base set, inletted swivels and, of course, it would be chambered in .30-'06 Springfield.

Happy Birthday!

I say happy birthday and Wow! Not for the years but I have never owned a 30-06. Confused I have hunted with them (friends of course). I currently own a p-17 barreled action in 30-06 but it is becoming my 9.3x64. Wierd! Well I suppose I should buy one now. Cool

The 35 Remington is 100 years old as well, this year. Nowhere near as precident setting as the 30-06, but still a grand old cartridge that has survived for a century.

The 30-06 is the greatest single cartridge ever invented anywhere in the world.

More than one hunter has used it to take every species of game animal in North America. I suspect there are some who have used it to take every species of game animal in Africa too.

I do not, however, think that the Springfield is the greatest rifle ever invented.

First caliber I ever acquired a rifle in, still one of my favourites. When in doubt, grab a .30-06!

My first rifle was a Rem 03A3 bought from one of my school teachers (He got it from the DCM) for $25. (He made a little money on me). I was 16, and the bus driver made me sit in the front seat with the rifle, as he didn't want anyone getting hurt on the front sight.. I still have it. long live the '06 Springfield. Les
