SevensIf you owned a 30-06 and a 375 . . .
I have 30-06 and 375 H&H for hunting with and would like to add another rifle to the arsenal, something else that will be great to hunt with. The big bores interest me most, but they're very specialized in their task and I don't foresee me needing more than the 375 H&H in the near future (although I'd love to be wrong on that). I'm also not interested in any of the lighter cartridges, say below .25 caliber (I'm happy shooting varmints with the 30-06.

Given those restraints, what caliber would you be looking at and why? Suggestions on rifles is also welcome.

RustyWhile not under 25 caliber, I'd opt for a .257 Roberts. I own 3. I also own a 30-06 and a 375 H&H.

jeffeossoif those were my only guns, i'd have to ask my wife if i could use them!
257, 7x64, 416 ruger, 458 something, 500 AR, 550 express .. that fills out a rifle collection!

vapodogFor deer and smaller targets it really hard to beat the .257 Roberts, .243 Win style of cartridges.....they work and they are fun to shoot!

Or if your .375 is anything like mine(a 10lb Model 70) a nice, relatively light, 9.3x62.

I think that you should maybe drop the prejudice and consider something like the 6mm Remington or maybe the 257 Roberts.
I think that 270, 280 and 25-06 are "too near" the 30-06 to be much of a difference.
But a 6mm Remington or 257 Roberts would make a nice light easy recoil deer rifle. Just don't use anything less than 100 grains in the 6mm or 117 in the Roberts.

Code4You don't really say what you would use it for.
I'd suggest the .25-06. Same length as your .30-06 but flatter shooting for some long range fun on varmints and capable of deer sized game.
Also very pleasant to shoot.

Reloader2I'd opt for a bit lighter shooter myself.
I've got both 30-06 and 375 H&H but I like shooting the 257 Roberts, and 6.5x55 as well as my 7x57.

cable68When I only had a 243, 300WM, and 375 I added a 404 Jeff; but I did have a buff hunt coming up. I'm now adding a 458 WM, and very seriously thinking about a 9.3x62.

StealthIf you're interested in going lighter, a 257 Weatherby or 257 Roberts (Ackley Improved is optional) would be a terrific rifle for pronghorn and mule deer in the West. If you're interested in going heavier, you can't beat a 338 Winchester Magnum for elk, moose, and the larger African antelope.
Alternatively, you might want to have the option of a lighter weight, all around rifle in 7mm-08 or .308 Winchester.

AzGuyThe reality is that with a 30/06 & 375 you are ready to hunt anything and everything in the world. Possibly the best 2 gun combo around.
Sounds like you want to try a big bore...if you like lever actions (or don't have one) try the 45/70, in bolts I'd go to one of the 416's or 404 Jeffery.
Perhaps consider a 9.3x74R in a double rifle

Joe A.Go long or go short. A flat shooting long range cartridge such as mentioned by Antelope Sniper would be a great addition or a short barreled, lightweight .308 would be nice.
I would recommend getting both.

woodelfIf it was me I would be a 280 AI. They shoot straight and far. I don't care what some people say the 280 AI Will out shoot the 06. The 06 is a great round I have 2 or them, but I perfer the 280 AI

Rae59I think a 250 Savage would be my choice but it doesn't sound like you would be interested in that for a varmint round. So maybe a 338 Win.Mag? Or the 404-375 on the wildcat thread has interested me.
I have been considering a 250 Savage for it's compact size (short action) and capability of shooting heavier than 100 gr. bullets, as long as you have a fast enough twist, and mininumal recoil for quick target acquasition. Haven't shot any game with one but have shot one at paper and I liked it.

A light "weight" 20"-22" M7 in 350RemMag + good hearing protection. It shoots the range of Bullet weights between your 30-06 and 375H&H, is easy to carry and plenty accurate for as far as you would care to use it.
Only negative aspect is the serious need for Hearing Protection when carrying it. With SAFE MAX Loads, it will damage your hearing.

SevensWell, I was at a gunstore today and ending up purchasing one of the rifles they had on consignment. Got a nice Interarms Mark-X in 25-06 for a little under $300 all said and done. Compared to what I've been seeing on gunbroker, seemed like a good deal to me. Almost ended up coming home with a customized Carl Gustav in 6.5x55 as well that was nicely sporterized.

TerryRIn addition to the 30-06 and 375 H&H I have, and have hunted with: 7X57, 30-30, 300 WM, 300 RSAUM, 45-70 and 404J.
I have and intend to hunt with: 300 H&H, 375 WBY, 416 Rigby and 458 WM.
If all I had was the 30-06 and the 375 I could have hunted anything that I already have hunted and could still hunt anything that I plan to hunt with the other calibers.
The only reason for buying another caliber is that you want it. Not a bad reason after all.
