After seeing a lot of people vote for the 9.3x62, and since the original post related it somewhat to high school cliques and such.....

I think the 9.3x62 is that foreign exchange student everyone thought was really strange at the start of the year, but soon became the cool kid to hang out with. Probably because he is European and good at soccer, and really, only highschool kids in the USA care about soccer.

I shoot three rifles that are very cool. .270 WSM, .338 Lapua and .358 STA. The former and later are Model 70 Winchesters and the Lapua is a Sako. I also shoot many more, but to me these are the coolest but like Scarlett said in GONE WITH THE WIND, "tomorrow is another day". Good shooting.

Phurley, want to give some more details on that M70 358 STA? Used to be very interested in that one until a friend bought a Sako AV and busted up 2 or 3 scope mounts lol it was like a 6lbs rifle, but even with a brake that thing was a BEAST to shoot.

I shoot two .358 STA's, one from Winchesters Custom Shop, the other also a custom Model 70 from a rifle builder in Wyoming. Both are Stainless and have brakes, the recoil is about like my unbraked .300 Winny. I got both at what I consider a bargain through gunsamerica. They both shoot with great accuracy and the bullet choice from 185 grains up to 310 grains make them extremely versital for hunting the larger animals. A 270 grain North Fork at 2950 fps has served me and my son and grandsons well for Elk and was a perfect plains game bullet for Africa. I have taken many Elk and Deer as well as Zebra-Kongoni-Impala. I will always have one in my hands when in Big Bear country or on the plains of Africa. Good shooting.

This is a question, not an opinion.

Is the .375 Flanged Nitro Express (2 1/2") a cool cartridge? The picture in Cartridges Of The World makes it look like something a dork dropped off but other illustrations make it look quite handsome. It seems to me that it would be a useful light double or single shot cartridge.

Soooo ... if it's uncool, how come?

My list isn't very long But it's what I like.
22 lr of course
22 Hornet because it works well beyond what the books say it should.
222 Because it's a great mid range cartridge.
22-250 for the mid to long range stuff.
250 Savage in a light sporter, Good all around rifle.
25-06 in a heavy varmint rifle for the things the 22-250 can't reach.
270 Win Just a nother great all around cartridge. If I didn't have the 270, A 280 Rem would be there insteads.
A 30-06 just because of it's classic status.
In handguns a 44 mag is all you need, in a Lever action it's pretty good too. A 22lr just for fun won't hurt.
For the bigger stuff the 375 Ruger will fill the bill.

300 ultra mag. I had five model 70 winchesters that would all shoot a 200 grain bullet at 3200 fps.

Plain but I really like it is the 308 winchester.

This year I tried the 25-06 and think it is definately cool.

Not at all. If you can handle the 300 win mag in the same rifle the ultra version isnt much different.

My cool list seems to change, morph, swing wildly,...

One currently owned .257Roberts. Will not be without it.

One's I'd like to mess with now.
.264 LBC & .458 SOCOM so I can hunt big game with a magazine fed black rifle. Because it's Sooo taboo! Eeker

.338 EDGE in a 14 to 16 lbs package to include a Nightforce scope and AI stock. Probably a Jewell trigger.

.44 rimfire. Own a '66 but don't own one round of .44 rf. Don't think I can afford it.

.45 LC. I don't care if it's commonly available. It is the coolest handgun round ever.

.32 Special. Hey, like the name sez.

.33 WCF. B/c I have an '86 X-ltw TD. Also b/c reforming brass for it is beyond my pay grade.

.30-03. Got a 1895 for it. "Hey have you ever heard of.......did you know that before the .30-06......." and other cool things to say at the range to impress the naive.

Swift. You don't even need to mention ".220". Gosh, the coolest varmint round ever. Even now people immediately think 4000 fps and abbreviated bbl life.

.300 Weatherby. I mean.......do I need to spell out why?

.410. Only someone who's never held a M-42 could disagree........or not want one......or more than one.

284s - The 7mm Rem Mag IS the 7MM.
308 - Holland and Holland is just flat out cool that goes for the 375 as well.
8mm - If you have used one you agree the 325 WSM is COOL.

Cool ones??? I guess that is opinion. To me the cool ones I have owned are

Hornet
5.6x52R (great in a small game drilling)
5.6x61 (barrel burner)
6.5x55 (way more capable)
6.5x68 (shoots 120gr better than a 270)
7x57
7x65R (again in a drilling)
308 Norma Mag
8x57IR
8x68 (an 8mm beast)
9.3x62 (does everything well)

With the Swede and the 9.3, I can do away with the rest...and maybe keep the Hornet.
