What is your favorite caliber?
So im curious as to what some of your guys favorite caliber weapons are in the medium caliber section.

I have a good assortment of medium caliber rifles. But my most favorite are my Remington 700 .308 that my father purchased for my my first year of deer hunting in 1994. Its a BDL model with a 21" barrel and it kicks like a pissed off mule. But I still love the rifle, in bone stock form I dont think I could ask for a better whitetail rifle. It shoots sub MOA with factory ammo and medicore optics. This year I plan on upgrading the optics and bases and adding some hand loads and a trigger and see if I can get single hole groups.

A close 2nd is my Remington model 700 Sendero 7mm mag. I practically stole this gun from a guy who just didnt want it or didnt know what he had. I traded off a scuba diving BC that i had about $500 in. THe rifle came with 120 rds of ammo, a hardshell case and a bushnell banner scope. It was in MINT condition...I quickly took off the medicore bases and scope and installed a set of Warne Rings and a Konus 25x scope. then had a Smith install a removeable stainless muzzle break. the gun didnt kick that hard without it, but with it now I can shoot it without it even set into my shoulder. Currently with the handloaded ammo and nothing else the rifle can shoot into the smae hole at 100 yrds. Im planning on eventually shooting 1000 yrd with this rifle after a trigger job and more load development. Will also take it to the uncles farm and try and tag me some ground hogs at 500 yrds.

I have several other rifle that fit into this catagory like my SKS, Marlin 30-30, M1 Garand and a few others. Buyt those are definately my favorites to shoot.

At one time I would have said my Savage stainless in .338 Win Mag. In the last five or so years I would say that's changed to the 7mm-08, I have a Savage Sierra carbine and a Mannlicher stocked carbine from the Remington Custom Shop in that calibre. It wouldn't be my first choice for elk but my son has two to his credit with my Savage in 7mm-08 using 140 grain A-Frames.

For me, it is a toss up between 308 and 9.3x62, but I do seem to carry the 9.3 into the woods the most. Wink

My Remington M7MS in .257 Roberts is my all-time favorite. Light, trim, and silly-accurate. Above all, it's consistent.

My Ruger #1 in 7x57 is a good second, but it's still too new and hasn't drawn blood. Yet.

Robert

For me, it's my trusty Pre-64 Mod. 70, .270 Win. It's perfect for sheep & caribou and I use 150 gr. Partitions. For moose & larger bears, it would be my .338 Win. mag. Just to experiment tho, I'm gonna take my .270 WSM with 130 gr. bullets for sheep.

For small varmints, the .223 Remington.

For small edible game, the .32-20 Winchester.

For non-dangerous "big" game, the 7x65-R

For stuff that wants to hunt or get even with me, the .404 Jeff. (unless it breaks into my house...then it's the 12 gauge.)

Hands down, the 22 LR. It's a real gun, kills with authority when applied correctly, and is tons of fun any day of the week. That doesn't mean I violate game laws just to prove its lethality.

A .358 STA Model 70 Winchester post 64 design from their Custom Shop. Shoots lights out and has drop dead red swirls in the Walnut stock. Stainless with a Leupold 4.5 X 14 Vari-X III scope to match. It has been with me from to home-Alaska-Alberta-Africa, and has always done it's job. A 225 grain North Fork at 3100 fps or a 270 grain North Fork at 2950 fps, it culls nothing. Good shooting.

My favorite could become either 270 WSM in same rifle but a Featherweight or 300 WSM in M-70 Coyote.

Split decision, depends on the game:

6,5x55 - 8x68S - 9,3x64(or -62)

It's impossible for a gun lover to "love" just one caliber... Wink

Depends on the temp, the barametic pressure, wind direction, mood, moon phase, and a whole lots of other things that influence me. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd have to sell off the others and that ain't gonna happen.

if i have taken it to the range twice and kept it, and its legal for the game at hand, i really don't have a preference .. 22LR to 550 Express, if it's legal, its all good!

Your problem is the stock, it doesn't fit. The .308 has mild recoil. An after market stock, such as, B&C, Mc Millan, H-S Precision or even Boyds' will really help. The Remington stocks are noted for causing pain. I shoot a lot of large guns and a Remington in 30-06 hurt me more than my .470 NE. Put a B&C stock on it and it is mild and pleasent......Tom

The one I am thinking about buying next. The next favorite is the one I have in my hands when Iam shooting.

Many years ago I thought 308 caliber was the best and most uselful most likely still is. But now I own dies for over 50 differant calibers and they all have usefulness.
