Anyone hunting with a rifle chambered in 6.8 spc.

If so, what type of rifle, pros and cons in regard to the cartridge ( shortened 30 remington if IIRC)?

Great little cartridge. I built 3 AR's and have taken deer size game no problem. Bullet selection is fantastic. Those little 270's just work well. Theres a 100gr AB, 85gr 110gr TSX SMK, Pro Hunters (they shoot fantastic groups -- better than SMK for some reason).

Just make sure to get a rifle/AR with a SPCII or DMR chamber.

I love mine....enough I sold a few 5.56 AR's. But you do pretty much have to be a reloader. The ammo is about $25 for 20 rounds.

Look to Silver State Armory for brass. Lasts long time.

Biscut,
Thanks for the info.
I reload for everything but rimfire and shotgun.
I have an AR lower that I recently built up. May do it in a bolt gun also.

i built a left hand mini mauser for my son several years ago when the cartridge first became available. he was young and the rifle fit him well both in physical size and recoil. as biscut said it kills deer size game without alot of drama, sorta like the rifle equivalent of a 28 gauge shotgun.

About three weeks ago, I barreled one up on a CZ action for a poster here; I have the reamer now and the HS gauges.

G-W,

I don't but one of my hunting cahoots has an AR in 6.8 SPC. He's all Head over Heels about it. He claims it's ranks sorta close to sliced bread, cotton underwear and the Next Coming .... he keeps a coupla rounds in his pocket and will talk to anyone about it. Everytime I see him he's into The Spiel! Whew!

I've shot it and recoil is pretty much as close to nothing as you can get with a "legal" Big Game rifle and his is very accurate, too. He claims it's the Hog Killer supreme.

Net, I've got a Mini-Mauser in 22-250 gathering dust in the back of the safe and actually the wheels are turning ..... 'cause it's a pretty cool round; got one of his empty brass cases sitting on the desk in front of me just to ensure the thought stays alive.

With 130 grain bullets it is like a modern 30-30
I like the idea of the 6.8 SPC especialy in bolt guns.
I also like the idea of the 6.8 bullets on the 223 case necked up and trimmed to 1.686" SPC length. I call it the 6.8CQC

I remember the 6x47 which garnered it's own success in bench rest shooting. I thought this was an awesome hunting round for small game but never built a gun around it. The 300 whisper is another cool idea and I love the concept. The AK's 7.62x39 has made a home for itself and the US needs to adopt or modify to fill this niche. The 6.8SPC seems to be a very good starting point but only time will tell. As far as hunting is concerned I think that it is not really practical for hunting. It is really specialized at the present and unless the US adopts it as a more effective urban warfare round, I fear it will eventually wane as so many others have.
