Ruger no longer chambering WSMs?
Ruger no longer chambering WSMs?
Looking through the options available for a friend of mine who wants to buy a 300wsm, we discovered that Ruger no longer lists the wsms on their website.
Have they discontinued the wsm chamberings or is this a website thing (or finger trouble on our part?)

jeffeossoWell I'll be... Not listed under any models...
guess I need to call them up and get all their "spare parts" on the followers... which work VERY well

Paul HI believe this is fallout from the Rick Jamison lawsuit against Winchester.

duikermanI've read several posts here stating that the WSMs are quite popular. Apparantly that's not quite the case.

Tex21I find this especially interesting considering Ruger has or will chamber for just about any other cartridge in the SAAMI catalog.

Got a feeling you right! Or maybe its just been ommitted from the website.

AaroninUtahNot surprising, they probably got the letter from Jamison asking for $5 per gun. Check out the price of Savage rifles lately, only the WSM rifles went up in price.

Paul HCould also be that ruger was being shaken down, er serverd by Jamison's lawyers at the same time the Winchester suit was going on.
I don't believe Ruger dropped the WSM's due to lack of popularity.

Possibly Paul, but they're in business to sell guns too and if the WSMs were big sellers I doubt seriously that they'd not raise the price $5 to cover the extra freight.
You might be right but to my view this is illogical.

RMillerI don't care how popular they are. I would not give jamison one red cent either. That guy can go to ....

Paul HRick Jamison designed a set of "short magnum" cartridges based on the 404 Jeffrey shortened to 2". He wrote about them in Shooting Times about 10 odd years ago, and patented them. The patent wasn't based on the exact case dimensions, but rather the "short magnum" parameters.
Wincherster took their 348 case, made it rimless and necked it down to create the WSM's.
Jamison sued Winchester for patent infringement, and won.

Sorry you feel that way...
perhaps these will change you mind
416 AR on roundtop mk1
on the rightside, the 470 AR on a mkII, and the left a 416 in a springfield
And, again, on the Jamison patient...
Every ONE of you guys (if you know the issue) will stand up and scream that Remington SCREWED George Hoffman on the 416 remington, and he received nothing...
Rick Jamison didn't allow that to happen.. and this is a case of the little guy sticking it to the big company (no, he didn't drive winchester out of business.. FN Herstal is STILL the largest gunmaker in the world outside norinco)...
Little Guy screwing a BIG BUSINESS!!!
and you don't love it? How many times has your mortgage payment gone up, just because "oh, we forgot to put that in escrow"... and you can't do squat...
your insurance goes up, but you've never made a claim on your car???
hell, GAS goes up, but exxon posts record profits...
and you don't love the single little guy getting a good bite in?

HondoLaneHmmm.. Ruger isn't chambering the wizzum line anymore? Sounds to me like the possibility of seeing various necked down versions of the 375 Ruger becoming factory rounds is pretty good. Maybe Ruger is getting ready to play a new ball game? Just speculation there, but it seems to make some sense to me. If they do indeed ceate a line of cartridges based off the 375 Ruger, I believe they will sell and it is my feeling that applause would be in order

May I add to that!

Likewise gents ... I hope a 35Ruger is in there somewhere with a 1:12" twist like their 350RemMag models. The speculated case design just begs for a range of cartridges and if a .35cal is in there ... it'll be back to the dog house for me.
Cheers...

RMillerA patent can only apply for that exact item. With those exact dimensions. If there is ANY difference then the patent cannot apply to the new item. How in the hell Jamison got the patent to cover the WSMS is beyond me.

they could in the years to come come out with all calls
i think the 7mm, 30, 338, 358 would be a handful of years behind when regular joes hear the performance of the soon to be but not for long to be wildcats.
add my applause

Not to derail this thread,...
this is only partiall correct otherwise granting a patent would be, by definition, allow that another company could make 1 MINOR change, apply for their own patent, and then compeat with you, based off your own work (say 10 years) and their 1 change (15mins)....
the patent is the patent, all the verbiage, the drawings, the concept and the proofs, as well as the conditions resolved. the drawing is only a small part of it.

buckshotI've always maintained that the WSMs were based on corporate greed and were an attempt to make big bucks fast.
I also believe they tried to scoop up what wildcaters' would have eventually created, and in fact did. What they saved on R&D came back to bite them in the ass. GOOD!
Moreover, FN chose to quit rather than pay royalties and was more than willing to throw Winchester into the ash heap of history. I'm glad they're gone.

Well I just picked up an 06 Ruger Catlog a few weeks ago from my local dealer and all 4 WSM calibers are listed. The 325 WSM is listed as new along with the 338Lapua. They list 2 models of the M77 Mark II in 270WSM and 7mm WSM one in stainless and one blued, both with 22" barrels. The 300WSM has both of the above models with 22" barrels and 2 with 16-5" barrels in the FRontier model. The 325WSM is listed in stainless only. Two models; one with a 24" barrel and one with a 16-5" barrel.

So, I just looked on the Ruger web site and confirmed the topic that started this thread. The WSMs are apparantly not shown as available calibers, regardless of whether they are shown in the printed catalogs.
I think I'll go ahead and presume that this means that they are no longer offered, whether shown in the catalog or not.
We can speculate all day about the motives of Ruger, and its all interesting. Surely they had a reason, but I'm more interested in what's next, since I bypassed the short magnums and felt no loss at their demise.
