Is it available yet? Big Grin

The velocity gains are inconsequential IMO...dead deer is dead deer and a gain of a small velocity is not significant in the field.

I applaud Hornady for continuing to try to bring out products that appeal to the hunter. I'm sure a few will adore this one.....as far as I can see it's a .308.....not bad at all as a 308!

I BELIEVE initial calibers will be 243, 308, and the new TC round.

I see it as a short 308 with same performance, filling NO void in my mind, other than getting more ammo sales in Hornady's pocket. A 277 cal version is expected with 120gr at 3150.

Possible other 'necked down' versions over time, think 25 and 6mm.

They DO use proprietary powders that the powder companies have elected to hold off on releasing to us. Same technology in 'light mag' ammo.

Ball powder, 15% nitroG, vs 7-8% concentrate, etc.

Can you confirm this with a link or other means of verification?

Vapodog,

I spoke in person last week with Hornady's head honcho, at the SHOT show in Orlando, the words came directly from his mouth. I think that is enough for me. He did say it was the powder mfg choice as to if/when they release those to the public. I think it would be a win win, as most reloaders I think would still reload with available powders before we go pay exhorbinant fees for factory ammo to gain 100 fps, or we can choose a bigger cased cartridge to achieve the needed performance.

i like the idea of the 270 version...

it would be a more ballanced cart...

the 30 tc will only be good with light bullets from the factory

Overall I think it looks like a good product but it is about a pound too heavy for my tast. Maybe in a much larger caliber that only weighs a few ozs more would be nice. That 3 lug bolt is heavy. I am going to pull out my Alpha Grand slam in 284 Win and compare that 3 lug bolt with the TC bolt. My Alpha only weighs 6-3/4 pounds with a laminated stock.

This is getting like the 1890s all over again...

Winchester comes out with a 25/35.. Marlin has to do a 25/36....

Do we really need another short action 30 caliber??? This is almost as dumb as the short magnum ideas of Winchester....and look where that got them...

Now THIS cartridge although it may be good, is DEFINITELY REDUNDANT, but again, I have thought that Hornady wants to try cornering ammo sales in the market, as hey, look how much military 7.62x51 is sold, 308 winchester is everywhere, this cartridge offers nothing in my opinion. The Hornady guy said, 'less powder, recoil, longer barrel life' but this is really nickel and diming it.

If I wanted a short standard 30, a standard 308 would win hands down for me, though I never had a want for one, it is hard to argue any other choice in this race.

If all you want to do is shoot factory ammo then the 30TC will do everything that a 308 will do. Only you will pay more for the hard to find ammo and your ammo selection will be greatly reduced from what you can choose in a 308.

If you reload you are better off with a 308 unless you can get some of Hornady's powder and if you could get the powder you could really make a 308 roar!

And all this out of the same sized gun as a 308, where is there ANY advantage?

It looks about as usefull as malmary glands on a male bovine!!!

By the way, it came to my attention that it may be likely that I was given 'mis-information' at the SHOT show, and that Hornady merely has a loading technique that can put more powder in a case, not a 'unique powder per se' so regardless, the 30TC is a marketing concept, pushes a 30 cal, same size and weight bullet, to same speeds as 308 Win, and both do it in a short action, so as Reelman says, it only serves to put more ammo sale money in Hornady's pocket.

Good move on their part, for those that comply!

For those in the know, they will likely pass.
